Reports On Rescue Program For Nazi Victims NEW VOBK (WNS)—Details of a far-flung relief and rescue program for the victims of Naz¬ ism In allied and neutral coun¬ tries in Europe, the Jewish homeland in Palestine and in the Western hemisphere, main talned throughout the present world conflict with the support of the American Jews, were out¬ lined this week at an executive committee meeting of the United Jewish Appeal. In the report presented to the executive committee of the U J. A., which is the single fund- raising instrument for ihe Joint Distribution Committee, United Palestine Appeal and the Na tional Refugee Service, William Rosenwald, Ptabbl Abba Hillel Silver and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise national chairmen, declared "Toui effort on the front for human reconstruction must keep pace wilh total effort on the balliefronts for democracy if the ideals of free civilization are to prevail." The report stated that the .loint Distrihution Committee had extended a.ssistance lo 9,10, 000 persons ih some 50 countries throughout the world in 1941. At present the Joint Distribution Committee i.s re<iulred to extend aid to 2,000,000 refugee Poles who are now in Russia in a non- sectarian relief program in col-| laboration with the Polish Gov- iHa^bbr-'tl»~-jolnt5S,;Dlstii1biiuti6n' Cotrimittefe his; aiiraniea^ fir thiie emigration of 5,000 refugees from' Europe, bringing to a total of 260,000 the number of victims of Hitlerism who have been helped to escape by this agency since the beginning of the Nazi regime in Germany in 1933. In addition, the J. D. C. is helping 115,000 refugees who have set-i tied in South America lo become self-sustaining. Aided by the United Palestine Appeal, more than .300,000 Jew¬ ish refugees from Central and Eastei^ European lands have found a haven in Palestine dur¬ ing the past nine years. In the first three months of 1042 three thousand Jews found their way to Palestina with the help of the United Palestine Appeal. Alto¬ gether, 38,000 Jewish refugees have come inlo Palestine since the outbreak of hostlhtles in September, 1939. The report added that 20(1 agricultural col¬ onies established by the United Palestine Appeal are producing large c|uantities of foodstuffs for the armies of the Middle East. On the home front, the Nation¬ al Refugee Service, in view of the need for skilietl labor, has placed special emphasis on mak¬ ing available lo war industries individuals who can find em¬ ployment in our production pro- ,gram without displacing .Ameri¬ can workers. From January througli Mai*ch, such placements totalled 1.643. An additional 155 placements were made in behalf of profes.sionals — 72 being for physicians and the balance for musicians and religious function¬ aries, the report disclosed. One of the most important new re¬ sponsibilities of the Natlonai Refugee Service, it was poijtled out, was that of aiding refugees to loyally comply with wartime alien regulations and restric¬ tions. —Buy War Bonds— Noted Speaker Will Address Sisterhood At Meeting Tuesday The final luncheon meeting of the year for the Rose E. Lazarus Sisterhood wiil he held next Tuesday, May 12, at 12:45 P. M.. at the Virginia Hotel. A charge of 85 cents per plate is to be made. Mrs. M. Myer Singer of Cin¬ cinnati, outstanding speaker, civic worker and leader of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, will address the group at the luncheon. Mrs. Sing¬ er is a hoard member of the Isaac M. Wise Tempie Sisterhood in Cincinnati and is supervLsor of the religious school there. She is extremely active in civic work and in this capacity served as chalmian of the Woman's Divis¬ ion for Charier Government, Mrs. Singer was also for six years, co-chairman of the Women's Division of the Jew ish Welfare Fund Drive in Cin¬ cinnati. She was aiso president of the Parent-Teacher's organi zatlon and is one of the editors stf the i'arent-Teacher magazine in that city. Also on the program there wil be a musical skit by members of Sigma l")e!ta Tau sororily of Ohio Slale University. This pres¬ entation recently won them a prize at the university's "High- Jinks" show.
