J- Abrams and others, have joined with a group of Catholics and Protest ants In the adoption ot a series of "basic religious beliefs " cording lo a version of the state¬ ment nserled in the Congress¬ ional Record by Senator Henry Cabol l,0(lge, Jr- of Massachus¬ etts.
The credo was adopted by the Ma.ssachu-setts Committee of the Conference of Christians and Jews- It read, in part, as fol¬ lows:
"Facing the fact thai our coun try Is at war, and viewing the present catastrophic results ofi godlessnesK In the world, (we) affirm the following common and fundamental religious be¬ liefs. The following slatemenl is - . - not a profession of faith lo be considered sufficient or com¬ plete by any of us, but an ex¬ pression of certain basic con¬ victions which we share.
"We believe In one God, Crea¬ tor, Suslalner, and Goal of the universe,
"We believe that the mind of man reflects, though imperfect¬ ly, the mind of God, and we re¬ ject, as a betrayal of human dignity, all attempts to explain man in merely material terms,
"We believe that God's all holy will Is the ultimate sanction ot human mortality and that man's true freedom and happiness de¬ pend on his adherence to divine will as known to him. We re¬ ject all deterministic interpreta¬ tions of man and all reduction of his moral duties to mere cus¬ tom or social adjustment-
"We believe that recognition of man's dependence on God is Ihe only path to the progress ot true civilization; that nations, as well as individuals, have the duty ot recognizing this; and that education or sochil theories which would slate man's duties, standards and happiness without reference to God are doomed lo !,failure-

WA8HINGT0N (JPS) — The function of American education must be "lo educate the youlh of today to live peaceably with those who are different," educa¬ tors a->;-sembled here for the In¬ stitute on Education and War wore told by Dr- Everett R, Cltnc'hy. president of the Na¬ tional Conference of Christians anil -lew^.
Assembled here from all parts of the nation to hear leaders in government and military fields exiioiind the new role of the schools in helping strengthen .America for the war. the teach ers heard Dr. Clinchy say that the organized forces of educa¬ tion and religion have "common stakes in this war and many parallel objectives for the post¬ war era. Wherever lotalltarian sialism have overrun society, the schools and the churches have been the first victims.
"From the beginning of Amer¬ ican history our educational, as well as political structure, was fostered hy religious people." In discussing war aims that face American educators, the speak¬ er asserted that "one aim in par¬ ticular desperately neetls the at¬ tention of educators- ll will be, perhaps, the greatest demand of the post-war world. The Iradl tional relationships of the cul ture groups to which most of us belong, Protestant, Catholic and Jewish, add up to a messy .his¬ tory in every country under the sun. But none of this Is in the American tradition- No total dis¬ respect of the collective person¬ ality of other groups is In the inie character of any modern nation, not excepting our ene¬ mies- The fault lies with those who have permitted the indoc trinalion of hale- Equally, the failure Is to be charged to those educators who have neglected their positive duly lo relate the teaching of their subject matter lo the brotherhood of the one human family,"
The schools were called upon to have courses in human rela¬ tions lo further belter relations between Protestants, Catholics and Jews in American commun¬ ity life. "The war is being fought to make the world safe for differences," Dr. Clinchy pointed out.
