Containing Threats Against

!
JOSEPH ENdEL IS
NOW AT LIBERTY
(Special to Ohio Jewis.ii CiiiioNicLE) WARSAW (J. C. B. hy Mail).— Latest reports from Posen indicate that the charge against Joscpli Engel, the septuagenarian resiUent of VVengorwitz, of having drawn hlobd from his Chris¬ tian servant-girl, ICatya Wenzcl, for . ritual purposes, has heen entirely with¬ drawn.
' . Instead,, a new charge is being brought
. against him thathe drew blood from the girl irt order to infuse it into the yeins of his invalid children to resto^-c them to health. The defense points out that the transfusion of blood is an operation which requires the attendance of , a skilled surgeon, and that'Erigel could hot possibly have undertaken such a task.¦ ,'¦,¦,;,,,¦ '^ail'Paid'.
¦ Meanwhile the two, million marks which were demanded as hail have been paid into court, and liiigel is at present ,nt liberty.
Thc local press, however, have by no means dropped thc charge of ritual mur¬ der and arc still claiining in virulent language that the Jews extract blood for use on Passover. They state that] the blood is sent to a central institution where it is dried into" powdered form and distributed to Jewish communities throughout the world for use in baking matzoth.
Dr. Gottschalk's Predicament Dr. Gottschalk, the rabbi of Posen, is constantly in receipt of scurrilous letters containing threats against his person and the whole Jewish community. "You are the rabbi," reads one letter, "and it is you who commands thc Jews to kill converts to Christianity and to, extract blood from -innocent Christians. It is you to whom the blood is delivered, and it is you who bribe our judges that they should acquit those who-are caught ex-
--"^r&cting-'^lie^ blood-of Christians. It is you who supervise the baking of mat¬ zoth. It is you who makes fortunes from thc sale of these matzoth."
EINSTEIN ADVISED
TO REMAIN IN HIDING
BERLIN, (J. T. A.). —Friends of Professor Albert Einstein insist upon his remaining abroad, where he is un- dersfood to be hiding from the "Deutsche Nationale" plotters by whom he has been blacklisted, together with a number of other leading German Jews.
The fear- of Professor Einstein's friends is justified in the opinion of the Berliner Tageblatt, whose editor, Theo¬ dore Wolf, is included in the mon¬ archists' blacklist. "Professor Einstein's continued concealment is advisable," the Tageblatt declares, "because thc assail¬ ants of Maxim Harden and Mathew Erzberger have not been apprehended. Professor Einstein's enforced absence is a blot on the German name and -honor."

SOKOLOW SAYS MANDATE IS THE "PAPER BRIDGE"
¦ LONDON, (J. C. B.). —The Pales¬ tine mandate is the legendary paper bridge over which" the' Jews will wend their way to Eretz Yisroel, Nahum' Sokolow, tiie Zionist leader, told ^ the audience that packed People's Palace to celebrate; the acceptance of the Man-
¦ date.', -...' ¦¦
Mr. Sokolow drew a historic parallel between the Jews in England and those of America, asserting that the permis¬ sion -ivhich Menasseh ben Israel secured from,Oliver Cromwell for the resettle¬ ment of. jews in Palestine ultimately resulted in the granting of the Palestine Mandate, while the emigration of Jews to America, has led tip to the develop¬ ment of a powerful Jewish settlement,

ARABS WOULD BOYCOTT
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
JERUSALEM, (J. T. A.). —What appears to be a concerted elf ort to prejudice' the Arab population against the approaching elections for the.Legis¬ lative Council has been inaugurated in an Arab press campaign. Arab writers advise their constituencies not to take advantage of the franchise as the best means of boycotting the Council. This appears to be the second step in the sabotage advocated by certain recalci¬ trant Arab leaders, the first being the vote cast against the government loan by the Arab members of the Advisory Council. .
Four hundred and fifty revolvers and other firearms were discovered by the police during r^iAi at Ilebron aiid Nablus.
AMERICAN KEREN
HAYESOD A CHAR¬ TERED CORPORATION
(Special to Ohio Jewish Chronicle) NEW YORK —In a state¬ ment issued by the national ad¬ ministration of the Keren Hayesod announcement is made that the fund has been regu¬ larly chartered as a corporation in the Sttite of New Yorlc. ¦
Considerable importance is at- . • tached to this action in view of the fact, that the fund will now have legal recognition and con¬ trol over all its branches and affiliations. Another reitson why the step is considered i'm-' pprtant is because it -will enable the Keren Hayesod to organize itself on a permanent basis, the organization which has - been functioning, hitherto having been temporary ih its' nature. Simultaneously pliins were an¬ nounced for effecting such per¬ manent organizations' at a special conference, to be called in the naar^future at which the contributors as well as the workers will be duly repre¬ sented and a constitution for the Keren Hayesod in America adopted.
The incorporation ^ has been brought about through the ef¬ forts of Morris Rothenberg,. of New York. Mr. Rothenberg is reported to have had the advice and co-operation of Samuel Un¬ termyer. The certificate of in¬ corporation was approved by Justice Robert F. Wagner, of the Suprenie Court of New York, and was filed at the office of the Secretary of State on July 20.

THE "GENERAL" AT 68 - AUGUST IS, 1922
Coluinbus is the capital of Ohio. It is more than that. It is the home of Josi'iih Schonthal, and every Jewish man, woinan and child—especially children— in the United States ought to know Un¬ cle Joe. \
Picture to yourself a man , nearing three Score ^nd ten, with distinguished white hair, of robust health, with - that ruddy complexion and erect bearing of one who lives and enjoys every moment of his rich Iif ei
Uncle- Joe Schonthal is more than a philanthropist. He is a humanist, He knows and js able to interest the finer
impulses of men, women and children— especially childi-eii.. It .has been my privilege to meet many prominent phil¬ anthropists hi the United States during my live years of service as national di¬ rector of the largest Jewish fund-raising organization in America. Many of these men and wohieii are the salt of the earth, but "Uncle Joe" Schonthal stands oiit above them all, ,-

PLEADS FOR SYMPATHY
WITH IMMIGRANTS
By REV. ROBERT WATSON
Minister, Second Presbyterian
Church, New York
' "God hath made of one blood all the nations that dwell upon the face of the earth." The Scotch have a familiar say¬ ing which expresses this a little differ¬ ently : "We arc a' John Thamsoii's bairns." The implication being that therefore we ought "to live together in hapiiy haririony as the children of a' common family. This is not an iinpos- .-.iblc a'spiration. We would be much nearer the attainment of this ideal today than ever before were it not for race prejudice.
Race prejudice is easily developed amongst an unthinkhig people. Wher- evH.'r else it may exist it should have no place in our American life. The negro has suffered more from prejudice in .-\iiicrica than any other race. Capable leaders from the white and bladk races, |i(jwe\ cr, arc succeeding in bringing these two to a better understanding. As a, re¬ sult of this both races are being bene- filed. 1 f as .Abraham Lincoln said: "No nation can exist half slave and half free," no more can it exist .with- race prejudice dividing it into,' opposing camps. ,,, :...'..'.
Antagonism Agai,nst Jews
Sad to state there has been a serious effort recently made to create aiithgo-l nisn'is against the Jew in America. The result has been that sbme people have been misled and sonic. Jews have become very sensitive and have thought there was intention to slight or injure them when iiothing'bu't kindness was intended,
Those of us who have inquired into this'propaganda and sifted the matter to the bottom can affirm that there is, no foundation for the propaganda save prejudice.
It is of interest to note in this con¬ nection that when the first of the Zion¬ ist documents were published the propa¬ ganda was aimed at al! Jews and Anglo- Saxons because it was claimed the An¬ glo-Saxons were the descendants of the "last ten tribes."
Whoever has studied the history of the Jew, his loyalty under great stress, his faithfulness to whatever he believc(J in the face of terrible persecutions, his obedience to the .truth ?s he under¬ stood it eyen at the cost of his life, must at once respect and honor him. The place of the Jew in America i^ one of glorious achievement. He has built him¬ self ever Bince 1654 into the life of this (Continued on page 7)

Promiment Guests
Men and women, many of whom are proniinent in business and professional circles of New York, were the guests of tlie 1100 children now at the home. Lionel J. Simmonds, .him'Self a graduate of the home and now superintendent of the asylum, was in charge of the pro¬ gramme. There was an inspection of - the building, situated at Amsterdam Avenue and 138th Street; a special en¬ tertainment and games, and a picnic- luncheon served on the large playground.
Thc Hebrew Orphan Asylum, which is maintained by the Federation of Jew¬ ish Philanthropies, claims to be the old¬ est Jewish child-caring institution in America. It is the outgrowth of the He¬ brew Benevolent Society, formed in 1822. Two years before a special fund had been collected 'to care for an indigent veteran of, the Revolutionary War, who, failing in health, had been placed iii a city hospital.
Makes Request
He requested that his last days be spent among people of his own faith, and money was raised to make this pos¬ sible. When the Revolutionary veteran died, -tjvo jyears later, there was left a fund of $306." A group of philarifKropic Jews, using this as a nucleus, formed the Hebrew Benevolent Society.

ROBERT WATSON Minister, Second Presbyterian Church, New York ' "God hath made of one blood all the nations that dwell upon the face of the earth." The Scotch have a familiar say¬ ing which expresses this a little differ¬ ently : "We arc a' John Thamsoii's bairns." The implication being that therefore we ought "to live together in hapiiy haririony as the children of a' common family. Capable leaders from the white and bladk races, i(jwe\ cr, arc succeeding in bringing these two to a better understanding. As a, re¬ sult of this both races are being bene- filed. 1 f as .Abraham Lincoln said: "No nation can exist half slave and half free" no more can it exist .with- race prejudice dividing it into,' opposing camps. ,,, :...'..'. Antagonism Agai, nst Jews Sad to state there has been a serious effort recently made to create aiithgo-l nisn'is against the Jew in America. The result has been that sbme people have been misled and sonic. Jews have become very sensitive and have thought there was intention to slight or injure them when iiothing'bu't kindness was intended, Those of us who have inquired into this'propaganda and sifted the matter to the bottom can affirm that there is, no foundation for the propaganda save prejudice. It is of interest to note in this con¬ nection that when the first of the Zion¬ ist documents were published the propa¬ ganda was aimed at al! Jews and Anglo- Saxons because it was claimed the An¬ glo-Saxons were the descendants of the "last ten tribes." Whoever has studied the history of the Jew, his loyalty under great stress, his faithfulness to whatever he believc(J in the face of terrible persecutions, his obedience to the .truth ?s he under¬ stood it eyen at the cost of his life, must at once respect and honor him.
