Description-Abstract	Hopewell effigy pipe known as the "Squatting Owl" is long and cylindrical with the head at the stem end of the pipe. Carving is schematic with wings on the body deeply incised. Claws on the bottom are carved in low relief and are highly polished, probably from handling. The eyes are large, circular, flat-bottomed concavities which likely were inset or inlaid with shell or pearl. Beak is angular, high relief and somewhat damaged on the end. The bowl is a large, circular, cylindrical projection in the back on the owl; a portion of it has broken off. Artistic style is typical of the Copena Culture of Tennessee. It is made of steatite that is very dark grayish brown in color.
