Description-Abstract
Hopewell
effigy
pipe
known
as the "
Squatting
Owl
"
is
long
and
cylindrical
with the
head
at the
stem
end
of the
pipe
.
Carving
is
schematic
with
wings
on the
body
deeply
incised
.
Claws
on the
bottom
are
carved
in
low
relief
and are
highly
polished
,
probably
from
handling
. The
eyes
are
large
,
circular
,
flat-bottomed
concavities
which
likely
were
inset
or
inlaid
with
shell
or
pearl
.
Beak
is
angular
,
high
relief
and
somewhat
damaged
on the
end
. The
bowl
is
a
large
,
circular
,
cylindrical
projection
in the
back
on the
owl
; a
portion
of
it
has
broken
off
.
Artistic
style
is
typical
of the
Copena
Culture
of
Tennessee
.
It
is
made
of
steatite
that
is
very
dark
grayish
brown
in
color
.
