Description	Contains the General Assembly act providing for the assignment of a patent for Ohio's state flag. Act includes text, drawing of flag, narrative description, and authorizing signatures. Contains one handwritten copy of the act and one printed copy.; Prior to 1901, Ohio did not have an official flag. This particular design, however, created by architect John Eisenmann, attracted the attention of Ohio's House of Representatives. In April 1902, a bill introduced by Speaker of the House W.S. McKinnon was enacted and by May 9 the design was signed into law as the state flag. The swallow-tailed pennant is steeped with Ohio symbolism. Triangles formed by the main lines represent Ohio's hills and valleys, while the stripes represent Ohio's roads and waterways. The stars indicate the thirteen original states of the Union and are grouped around a circle or O, which symbolizes the Northwest Territory. The four stars on the other side of the O denote that Ohio was the fourth new state to enter the Union. Added together, the seventeen stars signify that Ohio was the seventeenth state in the Union. The white circle with its red center represents the initial letter of Ohio and suggests a buckeye, since Ohio is known as the "Buckeye State."; Exhibited: "Ohio Originals" the Ohio Historical Center, March 1, 2002- December 31, 2003.

Transcript	75TH General Assembly,] REGIJ.LAR Session. H. B. No. 213. MR. McKINNON. i4 A BILL To provide for an official flag of the State of Ohio, and to designate its design. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio: 2 Section i. The flag of the State of Ohio shall be pennant shaped. It 3 shall have three red and two white horizontal stripes; the union of the flag 4 shall be seventeen five-pointed stars, white, in a blue triangular field, the base 5 ot which shall be the staff end or vertical edge of the flag, and the apex of 6 which shall be the center of the middle red stripe. The stars shall be grouped 7 around a red disc superimposed upon a white circular "O". The design of S the flag shall h^ according to the following diagram: ■ 9 The proportional dimensions of the flag and of its various parts shall be accord- 10 ing to the official design thereof on file in the office of the secretary of state, 11 Sec. 2.
