pipes

Tremper
Mound
.
Most
of the
pipes
were
carved
of
Ohio
pipestone
, a
silica-based
material
that
can
be
easily
carved
when
freshly
quarried
from the
hills
east
of the
Scioto
River
. The
pipes
represent
a
variety
of
animals
significant
to the
Hopewell
,
including
owls
,
wolves
,
deer
and
beaver
.
Skilled
Hopewell
craftsmen
carved
the
pipes
with
flint
knives
and
some
are
embellished
with
pearls
or
copper.

Description-Abstract
Effigy
of a
great
horned
owl
sits
on the
pipe
platform
. "
Horns
"
extend
backward
from the
lateral
edges
of the
bowl
(right
one
has been
restored
;
left
one
has been
damaged)
.
Eyes
are
large
circular
raised
areas
. There are
some
fine
incisions
on the
beak
. The
only
other
details
are the
feather
patterns
on the
wings
and
tail
.
Feet
are
represented
by
three
small
parallel
ridges
on
both
right
and
left
sides
.
Damage
is
apparent
between
the
right
eye
and
right
side
of the
beak
.
Platform
has been
broken
and
repaired
on
either
side
of the
effigy
; also
much
of the
posterior
platform
has been
restored
.
Distinct
concentric
striations
are
visible
in the
bowl
,
although
rest
of the
surfaces
are
free
of
striations
. There
is
slight
damage
to
two
wing
tips
on the
left
wing
.
Both
ends
of
platform
are
squared
,
although
the
posterior
end
is
not
original
. The
pipe
is
made
of
Ohio
pipestone
that
is
light
brownish
gray
and
grayish
brown
.
