| Description | Collection is comprised of photographs, photograph albums and ephemera documenting the 1920 presidential campaign, known as "The Front Porch Campaign" and the presidency of Warren G. Harding. Photographs of Harding's wife, Florence Kling Harding; Vice-President Calvin Coolidge; the Hardings' dog Laddie Boy; and many of Harding's contemporaries and political advisors are found in the collection. Coverage of the 1920 Presidential campaign includes photographs of the Hardings' home in Marion, Ohio where the campaign was head-quartered; celebrities, such as Al Jolson, visiting the Hardings; and photographs of Harding with numerous supporters and members of different constituencies. The campaign album also includes photographs of the Hardings voting. Florence Harding was the first First Lady to vote in a Presidential election. Numerous albums and photographs document the Hardings' travels as President and First Lady, including trips to Canada; Florida and other southern states; the Panama Canal; a camping trip Harding took with Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone; and the cross country trip to Alaska in 1923 from which Harding did not return alive. Photographs related to Harding's death and burial include his coffin in the White House; the funeral for Harding held in Marion; the tomb where he was initially laid to rest; and the monument built for he and Florence that is their final resting place. Ephemera includes certificates and awards presented to Harding and memorial documents.; Warren G. Harding was born on November 2, 1865 near Marion, Ohio. When he was 19 he and a partner purchased the Marion Daily Star newspaper, of which he became the editor. His political career began at age 21 when he became a member of the Marion, Ohio Republican County Committee. In 1888 he went to his first national convention and campaigned for Benjamin Harrison. Harding gained a reputation as an effective orator. In 1902 he gave the eulogy for his fellow Ohioan and friend President William McKinley. In 1912 Harding delivered the speech at the Republican Convention nominating William Howard Taft as the Republican candidate for President. He was elected to the United States Senate himself in 1914. In 1920 Harding was nominated for the Presidency. He won and took office in early 1921. Though he was President for a short time, he eliminated wartime controls, cut taxes, created the Federal budget system, restored high tariffs, and imposed immigration limitations. In July of 1923 he gave his last speech. On August 2, 1923 Warren G. Harding suffered a heart attack while trip touring the western United States. He died in San Francisco, California. |
