Cutlery
and
staff
in
1897
. The
Hunter
brothers
,
Milo
,
Chester
and
William
,
toolmakers
from the
Norwalk
area
,
built
a
stone
flour
mill
in
Clyde
in
1863
, with an
edge
tool
shop
adjoining
the
mill
.
One
of the
brothers
was
partner
in
Yeaman
and
Hunter
,
noted
in a
1868
newspaper
as
operators
of the
Clyde
Manufacturing
Co.
,
which
was an
edge
tool
manufactory
. In
1870
the
Hunter
Edge
Tool
Works
,
manufacturing
the
Hunter
Pruning
Shear
, was
built
. In
1877
,
Chester
or
William
A.
Hunter
and his
partners
,
under
the
firm
name
“Hunter
and
Brigham”
erected
the
iron-clad
elevator
just
east
of the
Star
Mills
.
Milo
Hunter
died
in
1877
. In
1880
,
Chester
Hunter
dissolved
his
partnership
with
B.O
.
Brigham
, and in
1882
took
Timothy
Wilcox
as
partner
in
“Hunter
and
Wilcox”
. The
fire
on
July
6
,
1883
destroyed
the
Hunter
and
Wilcox
mills
. In
1892
, the
Hunter
Tool
Works
were
sold
and
renamed
The
Clyde
Cutlery
Co
.
Incorporated
in
1904
, at
one
time
the
business
had
over
200
workers
on its
payroll
working
three
shifts
a
day
.
It
remained
in
business
under
various
owners
until
it
proved
unable
to
recover
from a
fire
that
destroyed
the
manufacturing
division
in
July
of
1970
.
