Description	Carte de visite of an unknown girl, 1864-1866 circa. A carte de visite, popular in the late 1850s and 1860s, was a 2⅛ × 3½ inch photograph mounted on a card sized 2½ × 4 inches. Part of the floor mounted stand, to hold her immovable while the picture was being taken, is visible behind her feet. This photograph is dated 1864-1866 because of the stamp on the back of the card. Revenue stamps were required from 9/1/1864 to 8/1/1866 as Congress created a tax on photographs as revenue for the expenses of the Civil War. Photographers were required to buy the stamps, charge for them, and cancel them in some way, usually with initials. This stamp is not canceled. Printed on the back of the card: L.W. Benham, Photographer, Clyde, Ohio.
