State of schools: fine,
but few turn out to hear
by YVONNE GAY
News-Times reporter
Where were you last Tuesday night?
if yem were like most residents, chances are you weren't at a State of the
Schools meeting.
School superintendent
Robert Boynton, along with
members of the school board
and representatives from Clark
_. Post Architects sat in front
of a sparsely filled Marion L.
Steele High School gymnasium April 10, hashing building plans and addressing parental concerns.
"Last year over 500 people
attended," Boynton said from
the podium, disappointed by
the small turnout "Your attendance shows how much
you really care about Amherst
schools."
Boynton went on to address
school finances, student performance levels and the issue
most residents came Out to

the 2002 school year. The
new junior high school is being bulk to aceonmod-M

However, if building projects are not completed on
time, educators will be prepared for Plan B. Boynton

According to Boynton, two
plans have been shaped concerning building completion of
the new junior high school,
and the start of the 2002
school year.
Plan A would be the ideal
situation. Construction would
begin in the summer as
planned and both projects, the
new junior high school and
additions to the existing high
schools, would be completed
before the start of the SepL
S, 2002 school year. Students
K-1 would report to Shupe,
2-3 Powers, fourth-graders to
Harris, 5-6 Nord, 7-8 to the
new facility and 9-12 to
it If l_SUy to be occupied,
even if the move would have
to take place during Ihe
school year.
"We feel we can move two
grades in mid-year, but we
don't want to move eight
grades during that time. It
would be too confusing for
five-year-olds," Boynton said.
"On the other hand, we're not
going to leave a new building
sitting empty."
Plans for the two-floor,
112,000 square foot junior
high school include a special
education department, science
laboratory, music and art
