Thos Rotch
Respected Friend,
Thy Letter of the 3 mo 8th was
received - About a month since Godfrey
Haga executed a Deed to J.M. Baumler for the
5,500 acres of land near thee, on which the German
Separatists are settled, to be delivered to him on
his executing Bonds & Mortgage to secure the
payment of the purchase money - At the same
time, as we are informed, Stephen Huber had
the form of a Declaration of Trust prepared which
he believed J.M. Baumler would be willing to
sign. However great the confidence
of these people may be in Baumler, should he
be removed by death his heirs may come forward
& claim the Land with all the improvements,
& their security therefore depends on having a
proper instrument executed & recorded.
It will no doubt be a great
convenience to them to have a grist & saw Mill
of their own, to be for the common benefit of
the whole & we are willing to aid them in
the erection of such mills, but we are unwilling
to give anything to promote the private views
of a few Individuals to the prejudice of the rest.
We wish it to be distinctly
understood that our proposed aid depends on the
executing & recording of such Declaration- and on
thy being satisfied that it has been done. I
will pay to thy order the sum of six hundred
Dollars for their use - on behalf & by directions of
the Committee.
Thos P. Cope
