Agreeably to thy request dated 22nd of
last month which came to hand five days ago may inform
that as it respects James Vaughn I have considered the matter
again & again, not only as it respects my Interest, but thine:
In the first place when Pleasant Cobbs mentioned it
to me thy prospects I was well assured that James was no
ways competant to the undertaking and that it would only
involve him in difficulty and be a disappointment to thee
his experience in the business has been very small, when thy
secpmd address came to havnd I concluded to write by the
present opportunity (which I considered the speediest) & let
thee know that after considering my sentiments in conjunc
tion with those of my Esthers, thou shouldest think best
to employ him I should give him up, not withstanding my
divers fruitless attmepts to get a hand to work in his place
I believe there is not a hand to be had in this neighbour
James arraived here yesterday and on conversing with him I find he
feels his doubts & says he had rather get an other years insight
before he undertakes to teach others. I have given him up to do
what feels most easy to himself, he wishes me to let thee know
that he feels most easy to stay, yet if thee thinks he must return
thee must write, with respect to other matters concerning [illegible]
