Thy remembrance by Letter was very acceptable. Am sorry
to hear of thy state of health. Wish thou would try a clove of Garlick, three
mornings successively; have them ready at the bedside to take when thou
awakes; then start three, & so on till thou hast taken 9 large cloves: It is very
good for complaints of the Lungs.
Even Thomas & John MchRim called here last Eveg; on their way
home; to which port they set out this morning; He looks & feels I believe
comfortable after his dedication. I had just returned from spending

the day from Meeting close, with our dear Ann Willis: I^ with them un-
-expectedly and very agreeably at the North Meeting, & expect to be with them
at the South to Day- She & Sarah Norton joined in desiring my return to
Thom Norton s to Dine; where we spent our time agreeably together, & took
tea at Thos Scattergood s: they were on their return from a Visit to Wm Jackson s
I spent a relieving time in a good degree on Long Island: tho I thought
pretty much of the Indians yet remaining there yet it seemed no time
to attempt seeing them, if ever it should be my Lot - But the Will may
be taken for the deed; which was subjected in resignation to the act, if
way opened in future, after two nights of tossing or sleepless seasons of
consideration. We attended * Meetings in the 7 Days, & got back to N
York first Day Meetings, & so onward; when I parted with my Compns at
Trenton, & with other Compns proceeded on to 5 Mo Y: Meetings in succession
in the Jerseys, & two others, & then reached the next day our west town Quary
Meeting for the Acting Committee, held here twice in the year: And with at
-tending the same, at two long settings, with the attendant exercises, & some
previous Cold, I was laid bye in a manner for two days: But felt very com-
-fortable that I had pushed to reach it, as I had failed of fulfilling an ap-
-pointment of our duties therein, is the way to obtain a part in that blessing. Bles-
sed is that Servant whom our Lord when he cometh shall find watching etc,
Luke 12.37. And may thee and dear Partner be frequent partakers of this
blessing in the attention to clear openings to, or manifestations of duty,
in your station as a kind of ourposts in an Army: Such have indeed an
arduous allotment: requiring a double watch at times. May the Shep-
-herd of Israel therefore give you light & understanding, strength & holy
resolution, for the discharge of known duty, & feel your minds with the
bread of peace therefore.
I deferred an immediate reply to thee, expecting my Nephew Saml. Emlen,
