My dear Friend,
Thy letter from New York by Cousin John
was very gratified to thy poor friends; we received it as
a fresh testimonial of that love which we trust
is Mutual, and which we are desirous of cherishing.
I intended writing by Anna Rodman,
but about the time of her departure was so engaged
as not to be able to write with satisfaction to myself;
and letters written amidst the hurry of business
are not always pleasing to the receiver, being generally
too much mixed with extraneous matter. It is not
have
until within a fortnight that I ^ felt leisure to write; and
I am not sure that this letter will be pleasing, but such as
I have, shall send, knowing that thou wilt be ready
to excuse my weaknesses, and rank me among thy friends.
My partner Dr. Lukens has quite recovered, but we have
both had enough to do until lately. I find him very
useful to me; as I can give him more business than I
expected in this time; and have therefore more leisure to
devote to better things; which I trust may be more and
more the case, as I advance in age.---
