New Bedford 12th Mo 30th 1821
Feeling an inclination to write to thee my dear Aunt
& give thee some particulars of thy New Bedford friends, I avail
myself of the liberty thou gave me during thy short visit to us, when
a little more than a year since we were all assembled at my
Grandfather s on the occasion of his eighty sixth anniversary, the
present. I believe was not mark d by any particular occurrence,
tho I was absent, having been prevail d on to accompany brother Saml
when he went about the middle of 11th mo for Hannah, who
left New Bedford pretty soon after the death of dear little Mary, she
was a sweet engaging child & the loss was particularly felt by her
parents- thou wast doubtless inform d by some setter(as from
enquiry I frequently heard of an intention from the different
members of the several families, to write to thee, or that it had
been done)- Her death was sudden tho for many weeks she had
had that distressing complaint the hooping cough, this appear d
subside, & seventh day she was as well as usual- was that night deeply
seiz d & died on 2d day afternoon- I suppose in reality the little creature
was worn our with the cough- change of scent was thought best
for Hannah who accompanied by brother Saml & her sister Ellen
went by land to Long Island, where she remain d till this month,
her visit was prolong d by the marriage of her youngest sister
Betsy, to John Barrow Junr of Manhattenville, which took place the
22d of lst mo. this I attended, & made a very pleasant visit of
nearly a week to my dear Aunt & Uncle Hazard whose kind attention
with my cousin s will ever be gratefully recollected, this cousin I
