small
but
agreeable
acquaintance
I
have had with
you
and the
expressions
of
friendship
I
have
repeatedly
experienced
at
your
house
and in the
Various
Subjects
of
Conversation
which
appeared
to
me
to
corre
spond
with
your
Profession
whereby
I
am
Convinced
of
your
reading
, to
pro-
mote
laudable
Improvements
for the
benefit
of
Community
&
the
Independence
of
our
Country
and
Considering
you
are
uniting
Interest
and
Influence
with
your
Principles
to
promote
the
purposes
aforesaid
particularly
in
progateing
the
give&
Merino
Sheep
and the
manufactories
of
Cloths
,
I
am
led
to
^make
the
fol
lowing
information
and
requests
to
you-
Numbers
of the
merinoes
Sheep
which
went
form
Col
.
Humphrys
flock
and
carried
to
different
parts
have
lately
been
purchased
again
by
People
in
Derby
and its
Vicinity
&
brought
back
at
different
prices
from
two
to
1500
dollars
each
.
Mr
Leman
Stone
of this
Town
has
lately
sold
a
yearling
Ram
for
1500
&
to
several
Persons
in
Company
here. He also has a
pair
of
fine
twin
ram
lambs
full
Blood
.
My
full
Blood
winters
well
.
I
have
one
ram
&
two
Ewe
lambs
of
15/16
Blood
and
seven
7/4
lambs
all
ewes
and
others
of
different
grade
down
to
7/16th
.
I
expect
your
flock
has
increased
greatly
in
numbers
as
well
as
value
since
I
saw
it
.
I
am
informed
that
Col
Humphry
will not
let
his
full
Blood
Rams
to
Common
Ewes
for
1/2
the
lambs
but at
6$
each
&
to
1/2
&
3/4
for of
my
own
half
the
lambs
.
I
expect
to have
Ewes^
sufficient
for the
whole
use
of
my
full
131d
.
I
have
two
7/8
two
years
old
[illegible]
which
Mr
Wadsworth
of
Gennesee
said
was the
besty
he had
seen
. he
[illegible]
the
refusal
of
one
of them for
300$
I
did
not
give
it
. He
is
said
to be the
greatest
Farmer
in the
United
States
.
I
sold
him
several
of the
cross
blood
rams
.
My
present
determination
is
not to
sel
any of
my
ewes
nor
my
7/8
rams
&
not to
let
the
rams
to
Common
Ewes
for
less
than
1/2
the
increase
the
next
Season
. The
minds
of
People
here are
much
engaged
in
propagating
Merinos
&
improving
in
Manufactories
. A
number
of
Gentlemen
proprietors
of the
Merinos
have
Met
and
appointed
a
Committee
to
enquire
into the
expediency
&
propriety
of
Establishing
Woollen
&
other
Manufactories
in the
Town
of
Derby
: the
prospects
of
profit
&
loss
from
such
an
Establishment
etc and to
report
to an
adjourned
Meeting
to be
held
on
Thursday
the
10th
Inst
. From the
knowledge
I
have of
your
woolen
experience
in
fabricating^cloths
I
presume
to
request
Such
information
in as
you
May
be
pleased
to
give^Respecting
Picking
,
greasing
Cording
rope
ing
&
spinning
Wool
of
different
kind
,
&
the
waste
in
washing
-
and the
quanti-
ty
of
Wool(in
the
fleece
or
cleansed)
it
will
take
for a
yard
of
Cloth
of
different
kind
,
&
width
when
finished
-
the
expense
of
different
machines
the
quantity
of
wool
worked
per
day
. The
number
of
runs
spun
&
how
fine
-
the
number
of
persons
employed
to
tend
them of what
age
and
description
&
the
expense
&
other
things
relative
thereto
necessary
for
consideration
in the
subject
with
your
opinion
of the
expediency
of a
plan
as
aforesaid
.
When
I
was at
Hartford
last
you
mentioned
a
machine
maker
his
name
I
do
not
recollect
.
Please
to
request
him to
inform
you
or
write
me
his
price
for the
different
kind
,
&
whether
he
can
fur
nish
any of them for the
ensueing
Season
&
at what
time
.
I
purpose
to have
my
Wool
Manufactured
this
year
not
far
from
500
lb
.
I
have a
ginne
almost
completed
and
wish
to
know
at what
price
you
will
pick

and
cord
it
for by the
W[inter]
&
also
your
price
for
Ropeing
that or a
larger
quan
tity
&
at what
time
it
can
be
done
