My dear Mother Philadelphia 7th Mo 11th 1794
The affecting Tidings of the decease of our beloved cousin Eliza Robinson, reach'd me but yesterday (why not before, seems a little strange as I am told she was interred last sixth day) the last acct sent before was that she was like to have the small pox favorably & it really shock'd me to hear so suddenly of the resverse. poor Amy, my heart tenderly sympathizes with her, having felt the poignancy of seperatings (some what in a similar manner) from One who was my Counseller, my guardian, my pleasant companions & my faithful affectionate friend, when a stranger in a stange land, O heart piercing reflection thrown in the way of Danger (apparently) on her account, how a similar consideration added to my Sorrows, yet doubtless will to hers surely there is a secret hand, and arm of power underneath a being Omnipotent without whose notice we are assued a Sparrows falleth not to the ground, here my tosed mind in the depth of affliction was sometimes favoured to find repose."
