Esteemed Friend New York 11th mo 20th 1821
Thos Rotch
We duly recd thine of the 3d Inst also one some time ago ordering 1 dz Shuttles which we immediately gave to the best workman in that line in this City who promised to have them completed in a month, but he is an intemperate man, and we find little dependance to be placed in him, we have repeatedly called on him for them but have been hitherto disappointed, the demand for these articles have been great & he has engaged more than he can perform, but he has lately got a partner with him in the business & we hope to have them very soon when they shall be immediately forwarded. we have wrote to a friend of ours who lives in Connecticut & who makes pickers in the most simple & approved construction, requesting him to inform us what he will furnish the Iron work per one week, a plan or model so that a Mechanic can readily construct the wood work & put it together as soon as we receive his reply we shall communicate it to thee, & we think we may venture to order it further, without waiting thy reply, [illegible] doubling it will be on reasonable terms, any service we can render thee we shall chearfully do, and hope there will be at all times freely communication with us whenever we can be useful to thee.
We are respectfully,
thy friends
John Barrow & son
