Description	In a letter to Benjamin Perkins, Thomas Rotch requests information on the education of children in public schools. He makes inquires on behalf of a committee of Quaker Friends who wish to establish guildelines for a Free School in Hartford, Connecticut. Rotch provides insight into early nineteenth century Quaker education. He discusses the Lancaster plan of education based on the principle that children could be admitted to school at age six and would be retained as long as they contined to show improvement. Boys and girls shared classrooms but did not sit on the same bench or enter and leave by the same door. The master's yearly salary to supervise one thousand children was one thousand dollars including a house rental. 8.5" x 9.5" (21.6 x 24.13 cm)
