I finish'd a letter a little before dark & gave to the care of
B Mott- giving an account of the distress our dear little Tommy
had lain in- since last 6th day eve- but lest this should reach
thee first may just repeat- that he was taken very ill with
a Quinsy last 6th day eve-our kind friends Patience and J Rotch
watch'd with it- we all sat up till near one of the sweet creatures
distress was truly affecting- they call'd me up about 5 expecting
it was near the close- it lay languid in great distress its dear
little Stomach drawing & heaving with every breath- Sguiles &
Gum Benzoine were alternately given it every hour by the Drs
direction- when he came early in the morning- he direct
ed, a repetition of the Sguiles in larger quantitys and a teaspoonful
of a preparation of tartar emetic every 25 minutes- our hopes
from these repeated 4 times seem'd baffl'd- & he proposed a change
to Ipecacuana - every 15 minutes- you may judge our painful
anxiety when the little innocent during the whole day puked but once
swollon & with apparent difficulty- & no hope of its life without
a removal of the tough collected Phlegm- then they gave it 2 comfortable
Clysters which operated kindly- the emetics made him very sick
& they thought he rais'd the Phlegm and swallow'd it - distress seem'd
to abate before dark- & he drank warm water- S Brightman &
E Hires watch'd that night- I had the headache and did not rise till
late- found him distressd & filled with pain- about 2 o'clock first day there
was the Strong appearance of fites- we sent for the Dr who [illegible]
of Peony tea & such things, in the evening his distress increas'd- and
I often felt his pulse with almost a hope that it intermitted-
brother Wm offer'd to watch with it and as I placed more confidence
in his judgement than any other person- I join'd him readily-
about 12 those alarming Symptoms abated- at 3 our kind Patience
came in to take my place- from which time he seem'd to rest more
