Dear Brother                              Philadelphia 1 mo 22 1814
                      My last to thee was of 11 mo 15 since which I have none from thee, I may first remark, taht I do not find Our Meetg for Sufferings in this City, have so much as entered into any consideration on the Subject of the direct tax. neither have I otherwise heard any thing like advice being given thereon.
     Yesterday came to my hands, a letter from Michael Bull, daed hartford the 17 Inst incloseing me for thy Acct., wo N Tork manhattan Bk notes of $500 each & one of New York Bank for $300 making together $1300 which being deposed by me in Bk Pennsa and placed at thy Credit I directly enquired at Farmer & Mechanicks Bank for a Check on Steubenville but finding this could not be obtained, I have procured from the Bank of Penns of this days date at 10 days after date.
14 post Notes to thy order No 2708 to 2721 inclusive of $50 Each is $700-
6 __ditto to ditto..2722 to 2727 inclusive of 100 Each 600
which are placed to thy debit exactly to ball my receipt yesterday                                                                           $1300
And this being the only and est mode on my power at present to adopt or to think of hope it will prove right & acceptable to thee. Michael Bull says he shall send me $2700 more so soon as he can procure proper paper.
            This morning came to hand thy Charity's Letter of 21 & 29 of 12 Month to my Hannah, She before had began a letter & tho tis not now fininshed, expect shortly she will write, as these dark & uneven days, it seems desirable that no circumstance should interrrupt the frequent communication by Letters, on the 8 of last month my wife had a Journey in Co with two Women & four men friends, being a Committee on that day setting out for [illegible] distant 150 miles mostly rough mountanous Country, from which notwithstanding the Roads shortdays & Cold weather they all returned home well & to satisfaction on the 24, being absent 16 days, & I think my wife's health suffered no injury but that she is rather better, and our whole family are favoured
