Description	In this letter, Stover writes from the line of battle during the Battle of Columbia, Tennessee. He describes the numbers of soldiers on both sides, and addresses some financial issues with his brother. His letter was quickly written, as he was sure he would be fighting in a few minutes. John Henry Stover (sometimes called Henry John Stover) joined the 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI), Company I on August 23, 1861 at the age of 21, having been transferred from Company A. He was wounded May 10, 1864, in action at Rocky Face Ridge, Georgia. He was promoted to Corporal on March 25, 1865 and mustered out with his company on November 30, 1865. From the “Oakwood News”, Paulding Co., Ohio, Friday June 9, 1905. The publishers at the time were Clarence F. Heller and Margaret Ann Stover Heller, son-in-law and daughter of John Henry. “John Henry Stover was born in Hancock County, Ohio, March 6, 1842, died at his home in Oakwood, May 29, 1905, giving him an earthly life of 63 years, 2 months and 23 days. He was a son of Henry J. and Margaret (Bogard) Stover, of German and Irish extraction. He was one of a family of twelve children, three brothers and two sisters of whom survive him. At the age of seven years his father died, leaving the care of a large family upon the widowed mother. His chance to get an education was very meager, but his much reading in after years made him one of the best posted men of his time. At the early age of 19 years, shortly before enlisting in the war of the Rebellion, he gave his heart to God and enlisted in the service of the Lord in which service he was faithful to the end. August 6, 1861, he enlisted in Company A, Forty-ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry and shortly afterward was transferred to Company I of same regiment, having enlisted for three years or during the war, and took part with his regiment in the battles of Shiloh, Stone River, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, where he was wounded in the left leg, during the former charge on the enemy. He also received a scalp would at the Rocky Face Ridge, on the 10th of May, 1864. He was present and participated in all the battles on the Atlanta campaign and the battle of Jonesboro had been fought, when Sherman sent part of his army South and part North, the 49th was among the number that marched North after Hood’s army. The 49th was then under Thomas’ command and participated in the battle of Franklin and Nashville, and war among the number to help annihilate Hood’s army during the summer of 1865. Mr. Stover participated in one of the most hazardous campaigns of his experience in Texas. He was mustered out at Victoria, Texas November 30, 1865, having served over four years, marched over 1000 miles and fought 23 hard battles, and over 100 skirmishes and has no hospital record. He enlisted as a private and mustered out as a corporal. He received a veteran’s medal from the state of Ohio for long and continuous service…”

Full Text	[page 1] November 28th /64 [1864] In line of battle at Columbia [Tennessee]. [John Bell] Hood�s Army is here. We are fighting him and have been for several days. I am afraid that he will fluh [flush] us out. Our Army is composed of the 4th and 2 [2nd], 8 [8th] Division of the 23rd Corps And a few.. [sic] detached troops. They have about 60,000. Our regiment [49th OVI] has only lost three or four men yet. Jacob I sent one hundreed [sic] dollars [$100] by the state agent and now I will send you the receit [receipt]. You will get the money at Findlay [Ohio]. Watch the post office at Benton [Ohio] [page 2] because when the money comes he will send you notice to Benton and then you take this receipt and draw it. And if you don�t get any notice for some time go and see anyhow. I drawed [drew] $205 and would have sent more but # could not get the change I must move, may be fight[ing] in a few minets [minutes] Yours in haste John H. Stover Jacob W. Stover
