Description	This is a certificate of discharge for the Barney Kaiser, (in muster rolls as Barney Kiser). It bears an illustration of an eagle with wings unfolding, in front of several flags and a background of stars. The document bears a "Bounty Paid" stamp and the information regarding this transaction has been vertically over the text. See full text for details. Bernard Kaiser, b.1841-d.1891, immigrated from Hanover, Germany and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. Listed as Barney Kiser in the muster rolls, Kaiser, age 24, joined the Union Army on September 31, 1861, signing for a 3 year period of service with the 4th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (OVC), Company C, which mustered in on November 6, 1861 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. Upon enlistment he was described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. Prior to the war he worked as a cooper (one who makes casks and barrels). He was appointed Sergeant on September 30, 1864. Sergeant Kiser mustered out about 2 week prior to his company, on June 30, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee, by order of the War Department.

Full Text	[Front] To all whom it may Concern: [An illustration with stars, flags and eagle about to take flight. Also a Bounty Paid stamp which reads as follows: [handwritten above] July 28, 1866 #100 BOUNTY PAID Washington, D.C. July 17, 1867 D. Taylor, Paymaster, U.S.A.] Know ye, That Barney Kaiser a Sergeant of Captain Wm [William] B. Richardson Company C, 4th Regiment of Ohio Calvary Volunteers who was enrolled on the Twenty first [21] day of September on thousand eight hundred and sixty two [1862] to serve three [3] years or during the war, is hereby Discharged from the service of the United States, this 24th day of June, 1865 at Nashville Tenn [Tennessee] by reason of Genl order 83 W.D. [War Department] May 8th, 1865 (No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist) Said Barney Kaiser was born in Hanover in the State of Germany is Twenty-four [24] years of age, five [5] feet six [6] inches high, light complexion, grey eyes, light hair and by occupation when enrolled, a Cooper Given at Nashville Tennessee this Twenty-fourth [24] day of June 1865 W.B. Richardson Capt Co. [handwritten vertically across the text] [illegible name] Capt 18 U.S. Infantry [illegible] Paid June 28, 1865 by [illegible name] Paymaster U of A [Reverse side] Oath of Identity Barney Keiser [Keiser] of the town of Cincinnati Count of Hamilton in the State of Ohio On this 10 day of October in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty five [1865] personally appeared before me, the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace for the county and her [here] above mentioned, Barney Keiser [Kaiser] who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Person who was a Sergeant in the company commanded by Captain W. B. Richartson [William B. Richardson] in the regiment 4th Ohio commanded by Capt Thompson that he enlisted on the 21st day of September for the term of Three Years and was discharged Honorable on the 24th day June 1865 by reason of Gen [General] Order 83, W.D. [War Department] May 8th 1865 Barney Kaiser worn and subscribed to before me the day and year above written John Gerke I certify that John Gerke before whom the above affidavit purports to have been made, is a Justice of the Peace duly authorized to administer oaths, and that the above is his signature. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my official seal this 10th day of October in the year One Thousand and Sixty five [1865] at Storrs in the State of Ohio Hamilton County Clerk of the Henry [illegible]
