Dear
Sister
,
I
see
your
letter
and
one
from
father
day
before
yester-
day
[yesterday]
and
it
did
really
give
me
more
pleasure
than a
present
of a
hundred
dollars
would have
done
.
I
would have
ans-
wered
[answered]
them
ere
this had
it
not been that
we
had
just
got
ready
to
march
and in
fact
I
was
pretty
tired
with
marching
.
I
don't
think
you
recieve
[sic]
all
of
my
letters
for
I
try
to
write
at
least
as
often
as
once
a
week
to
some
one
of
yous
[sic]
I
have
written
twice
to
father
and
four
or
five
times
to
you
or
Loyde
[sic]
since
I
have been in
Virginia
Now
while
I
think
of
it
I
will
[page
2]
thank
you
for the
mittens
you
sent
and also the
papers
.
I
got
them
all
right
and
safe
. As to
whether
we
have
tents
to
sleep
in or not
I
have had
generally
,
though
all
were not
so
fortunate
.
I
can
make
a
good
tent
out
of
my
oil
cloth
blanket
and
some
poles
though
ten
of us
slept
in a
house
last
night
for the
first
time
since
leaving
home
. The
worst
of
it
is
the
march
from
Point
Pleasant
to this
place
which
is
over
700
miles
.
Our
camp
is
just
below
Gauley
Bridge
which
you
have
heard
of
so
often
.
It
was a
hard
march
one
day
we
made
22
miles
lots
of the
boys
gave
out
and
fell
behind
but
I
stood
it
bully
I
don't
boast
at
all
but they
call
me
one
of the
toughest
men
in
Co
.
B
.
[page
3]
you
requested
me
to
send
my
picture
home
. This
I
would
gladly
do
were
it
possible
buy
every
thing
is
played
out
here.
I
will
give
a
pencil
portrait
of
myself
.
Take
me
as
you
knew
me
.
Straighten
my
back
till
I
am
an
inch
and a
half
taller
than
I
every
was
before
add
10
or
15
pounds
to
my
actual
weight
,
color
my
face
a
dark
brown
and then
add
to this that
my
hair
has not been
cut
since
I
left
home
, and
you
have a
faint
idea
of the
half
Injin
[sic]
,
half
Arab
, and
half
hog
(a
joke
see
Artemus
Ward)
that
used
to
stay
at
home
and
keep
out
of the
rain
.
[illegible]
Wel
[we]
have
driven
the
rebs
[rebels]
60
miles
without
a
fight
. a
little
the
tallest
skedadlle
of the
war
I
think
.
I
suppose
our
regiment
[page
4]
will
quarter
at
Fayette
,
[illegible]
this
winter
. If
it
does
I
will
get
a
furlough
and
come
home
if
possible
.
I
think
Capt
[Captain]
Townsly
[William
A.
Townsley]
will
intercede
for
me
with the
Colonel
for
I
have
tried
to be a
good
soldier
and
I
think
have the
good
will of
my
officers
I
have
written
my
paper
about
full
and
I
will
close
by
subscribing
myself
Yours
Truly
