Dearest
Ammie
It
is
with
great
pleasure
that
I
attempt
to
addrefs
[address]
you
this
evening
.
We
have
just
come
in from
Battallion
[battalion]
drill
and
we
will
soon
have to
go
on
Drefs
[dress]
parade
.
We
are
all
well
except
[David
J.]
Wilson
, he has had the
ague
for
several
days
and
now
has the
intermittable
fever
.
Hope
these
few
lines
may
find
you
enjoying
good
health
.
[page
2]
We
haven't
had any
mail
for
nearly
three
weeks
,
since
I
last
heard
from
you
I
have
written
you
two
letters
with this
one
,
don't
know
Ammie
whether
you
intend
doing
with
me
as
Lydia
did
with
Aust
or not. But what
did
I
say
I
did
not
know
?
Treu
,
I
said
so
, but
I
did
not
mean
it
,
no
,
no
, for
in-
deed
[indeed]
I
place
more
confidence
in
you
than that.
I
don't
believe
the
mail
all
comes
through
, but
we
heard
there was a
large
mail
in the
city
for us but
we
haven't
got
it
yet
.
We
came
here on the
7th
do
not
know
how
long
we
will be here,
some
said
we
will
stay
here, but
I
do
not
[page
3]
believe
it
.
I
don't
believe
that
we
will be
stationed
at any
point
while
in the
service
.
Ammie
I
am
sitting
out
here
beneath
a
large
tree
on the
bank
of the
Cumberland
river
writing
to
one
whom
i
respect
and
truly
love
,
thinking
of the
merry
times
we
have
spent
together
, of
our
school
going
days
,
oh
Ammie
how
often
does
my
mind
run
back
to those
happy
scenes
and
often
do
I
look
forward
with
all
anxiety
imaginable
when
we
may
return
home
and then
may
we
make
those
times
more
fresh
to
our
minds
by
repeating
them, but what
did
I
say
[page
4]
by
repeating
?
I
did
, but
never
can
we
enjoy
those
past
pleasures
over
again
Do
you
believe
we
can
? but
I
hope
we
may
live
to
enjoy
similar
ones
.
Oh
Ammie
,
isn't
it
singular
how a
persons
mind
will
wander
back
on
past
pleasures
?
I
wish
you
could
take
a
peep
into
our
camp
some
of these
nice
days
and
see
us
while
on
parade
seeing
the
field
white
with
tents
as
far
as the
eye
can
reach
, But
Ammie
I
will
stop
for this
time
hoping
soon
to
hear
from
you
and then
I
can
do
better
.
Please
write
soon
Ever
Your
True
Friend
Hiram

Addrefs
[address]
as
before
,
Ommitting
the
name
of the
camp
.
