Description
Section
of
limb
from the
historic
Logan
Elm
tree
.
It
is
brown
colored
wood
and
measures
17.5
x
47
x
14
centimeters
. The
limb
section
is
slightly
curved
with
four
places
where
small
branches
were
removed
. A
small
metal
plaque
is
attached
near
the
center
. The
plaque
reads
"
Log-an
Elm
Sept
.
10
,
1964
Gift
Ohio
Historical
Society
". The
Logan
Elm
tree
was
officially
declared
dead
in
August
1964
. At that
time
,
it
was
estimated
to be
200
to
300
years
old
. The
tree
was
approximately
24
feet
in
circumference
.
According
to
legend
,
Mingo
Chief
Logan
delivered
an
impassioned
speech
beneath
the
tree
in
1774
. "
Logan's
Lament
"
included
his
grievances
over
the
White
settler's
betrayal
and
murder
of his
family
and
tribesmen
.
Logan
had his
speech
written
down
by an
interpreter
so
that
it
could
be
delivered
to
Lord
Dunmore
,
Royal
Governor
of
Virginia
,
because
he
did
not
trust
Dunmore's
representatives
enough
to
attend
a
peace
conference
to
create
a
treaty
that
Logan
did
not
think
would be
honored
.
