November 14. LETTERS FROM ROM HEY , Camp Keys, Romnkt, Nov. 1st. Mr. Hamskv Dear Sin: Thinking that the numerous friends of our boys from old Knox, would be pleased to rend the particulars of our expedition to this place, I have taken the liberty to inform them through the medium of your paper, which we are always pleased to see, but of late its visits have been but "few and far between, tlmt rather being the fault of our friends or the mail, perhaps both. One week ago this day, our regiment got in re: diness.and started to retake this place, leaving company E, then in com mand of Lieut. Shuliz, to protect the fort nnd provisions of Pendleton. Our boys were all in great glee at the prospect of having a little fun after laying so long a lime in camp. We traveled 26 miles that day, reaching New Creek, six miles above the station, and encamped at the f.rks of the road where the Romney Pike inter, sects the Great Western. It was a hard day's march, and that night we heard a great deal complaint of sore an l blistered feet. Next morning wo were all up early, got in readiness, and made up our minds to lodge thnt night in the beautiful little town of llomney, the distanco being 20 miles. After mnrhinc some two or thrpo miles, we came up lo Gen. Kelley, having with him the 8ih Ohio Regiment, 500 of the 7th Virginia, and the Ringold Caval ry, the latter numbering some sixty is en under the command of Capt. Keys. We were detained only a few moments when the whole lirigade was got in readiness, nnd we took up the line of march, quick step. When within six miles of the Gap, the brigade camo to a halt, the 8:h and 7th opened order, came to a present arms and the gallant 4th proudly marched through their lines, and took position in the advance. As we passed through tho.ir lines, we were greeted with exclamations, such as "give them thunder boys," "give them the d 1," "you are the boys," and "hurrah for the 4th Ohio," &c. We then marc led on in fine spirits, the buys forgett ng that they, a few hours before, had blistered feet, and that they were lired and fatigued from bard marching. On lo Romney was the word as we moved iiuickly on. At three o'clock in the afternoon, on turning the point of a hill, and within three fourths of n mile from the mouth of the Gap, we were warmly saluted by a goodly number of shells which fi ll thick and fast, thrown from a howitzer, planted near the mouth of the Gap, on the side of the mountain, by the enemy, showing that they had full knowledge of our intended visit. They done us no injury, as their shots v,ero nil too high. We opened fire on them from a 12 pounder, which caused Ihem to retire rather quickly through tho Gap, with their pieces. Tho Cavalry nnd our regiment followed in hot haste throu gh the Gup; but after passing that place a distance of half a mile, we were brought to a hah by a few very unmusical notes soun dtd from their I owiiz;r, at the bridge which crosses the lower bran h of the Po-)mac, also from a six pound rifled piece, p anted in the cemetery adjoining the town. Our artillery men commenced playing on them from a six and 12 pounder. A heavy firing was kept up for some thirty minutes on bjth sides, but with not much effect, as the most of their shots wen: whistling over as A few fell amongst our mo", wounding three in the 4th and killing one man in the 7th Virginia regiment. Our gallant C ilonel was heard to eny that wo co ilJ do nothing with our guns should they onco get us in range with their r fled piece. He rode ahead and ordered the cavalry and the 4th to charge through tho bridge and up the hill, and take their pieces at the point of the bayonet. Wo started down the valley, through the bridge nnd up the hill. Could you have heard them you would have thought that all of tho inhabitants of the lower regions had been let loose a?d were testing the strength of their lungs by cheering aud halloing. On arriving at tho cemetery they had did through the town towards Winchester. Our ciralry followed them some two or three miles, overtaking and killing a few of ihem nnd took possession of their rifled piece and howitzer, also all of their wagons fi led with provisions, camp equipage, amuni-tion, clothing, Ac. We captured 100 stand of arms and 75 horses, one flag and Col. McDowell's carriage and span of mules, he thinking it would be safer to take it a foot across tho mountains, in which I think the old gentleman was correct.Romney is a beautiful little towu, the county seal of Hampshire county. It ia situated on an elevation of aome two hundred feet above the i i ver, ith some five or tlx hundred mrmbrtimlt, At vet T have not been able to find a Lnion family in the plaoe. A great many men who had fled from the town and vicinity are aily returning. They had been told that they would be robbed and murdered if the Yankees caught them. There ia quits a number of pretty yrung ladies in th place, whom I think would make better soldiers than the men here, judging from the way they talk and act. They are very spunky; but should we remain hers long we hope to see some improvement in their manners towards us, whilst their beaux are absent. We have quite a number of good looking young men, such as Captains B and C , from your city, whom I think would olunteer to fill their places to the best of their ability, when off of duty, should their servi ces be required. The weather is very cold and it has rained tho past three days. Our force numbers about 2 000. fh picket duties are extremely hard. Firs hundred men are kept out on different roads and gaps. We are daily expecting reinforcements; Danham's Battery arrived a few days since, I think that our next move will be on Winchester. Our new Colonel, James Mason, is all that a soldier could wish. Fn ia gentlemanly and courteous as well as a fine officer.Our old friend, Col. Cantwe'l, acoom-; anied us on the expedition, and could be seen in the thickest of the haolo, at one time a shell bursting under his horse, but doi g no injury. Adjutant Green, formerly 1st Lieutenant of our company, conducted himself on that day most bravely, leading the charge ncios3 the bridge, and urging the men on to victoiy. Cap Kkvs, Romney, Va ,) November 7th, '1861, j" Mr. Ramiet: Since I last wrote you, the Federal forces stationed hero hare had another slight skirmish with the rebels, resulting in the Confederates route. The secsi sianists held possession of a gap' in the mountain, 15 miles from our present camp, and 20 miles from Winchester. The fight was on ihe afternoon of the Cth ( Tuesday. ) The rebels were between 400 and 500 strong, and held aslrong position. Five or six of the rebels were killed and wounded, and 3 priioners captured. Our forces eome off without a wcratch. The Federal and Confederate pickets are stationed but four milei apart, on the Winchester road. A few days tince, two of the Ringold Cavalry ventured Ico far oatfidttof our picket lines, when they were filed upon by secession scouts, two shols taking tffect, but resulting in noth ing more than slight wounds. Severs reconnoitcring parties have been sent out by General Kelley, but have resulted as yet in gaining no valuable information in regard lo the enemy' position or numbers.It is supposed by some that we will re main here this winter, and by others that we are waiting fer the dvnnce of Genera) Bank's upon Leesburg. The latter, ws think, is the most probable, If General Banks should succeed in capturing Leesburg, it will be a de 'th blow to aeeession in that section. The Confederate forces at Winchester wHI be completely surrounded, and their rail road omrauniea tion out off with Manassas. Immediately after ihe capture of Leesburg, the two General, (Banks and Kelley) v. ill advance on either sido of Winchester where, it is prcbable, n strong opposition will b made by the Confederate forces. The proclamation of Gen. KelFey, referred to in my last, has produced its desired effect. A perfect rush of citisens baa been constantly kept up since ths proclamation was posted throughout the connlry, all coming lor the same purpose to take the oath of allegiance, and some activity is even observed in the little town of Romney. The General recommends to them the opening of their stores and groceries, insuring them protection, and offering them the use of the Baltimore b Ohio railroad for the transportation of their goods.
