Editor Ohio State Journal: Henati. A resolution of inquiry into performance of mall contracts to Liverpool and California. Adopted. Bill to establish branch mint in New York taken up. Mr. Davis moved no amendment fur two assaying officei in Cal . jfornia. Alter debate tlie bill was postponed to Wednesday next-Mr. Mason addressed the Senate, giving an exposition of the views of those opposed to the compromise, Mr. Cloy naked Mr. Mason whether lie wos willing to take the Missouri compromise line to the Pacific, without any legislation by Congress, with resect to slavery on either side. Mr. Mason said he was. Mr. Clay then asked whether all Southern tienatore would assent to the saino proposition. Mr. Mason said Mr. Clay might soon obtntu an answer, it he would express hii own assent to that proposition. Mr. Clay said he would assent, so far as to extend the line to California, but not through it. Mr. Mason replied that the abolition of Blave trade in the District of Columbia enne within ecopo of the resolution. Mr. Cass inquired what was to be the advantage of running the line of 38 W to the Pacific, without any provision respecting slavery either north or south ot it. Mr. Rerrb'n said that that lino would cut off in California fou r ond a hali degrees of territory believed to be adopted to slavery, and leave it open to the inhabitants to settlo the question of tlave-ry for themselves. Mr. Mason snid if Mr. Clay would assent to rminmg the compromise line to tho Pacific, and the consequent contraction of the boundary' r California, there would ho no difficulty in settling the whole (juration. Mr. Clay intimated that if there was n general concurrence of southern Senators in that measure, he might givu his consent. He invited Mr. Mason to bring forward his proposition. Mr. Mason said he w-is in the minority, and had no design ol making any proposition. Mr. Underwood took the floor, and tho Senate adjourned. House. Alter aume unimportant business the House went into committee of the whole on the California messugc. Mr. Bennett advocated tin: ndmission of Californin, and spoke against further extension ot slavery. the committee rose, nnd the House adjourned. MANAI.'EHS office. R. ARMSTRONG, Agent, Wheeling, Va.
