Pails l)io State Jfountol. THURSDAY MORNINQ, JULY 23. 1851. A Carious Story, A writer in the Philadelphia Sunday Ditpatck give the following as one of the exueriencea of an editn- r a daily paper in lhat city. 1 here were ao many persona who viaited Ihe editor with a design to discuss in rather a anmmarv minn.r the subject of their grievances, that these little embellishments (pistola) seemed somewhat indispensable. It duet appear, however, that they were called into active use, a tight of them usually auswering a very pacificatory purpose. One day, when they were out of sight, a tall, atout, athletic person entered the editorial room very quietly, and perceiving the gentleman present whom he especially wanted, he carefully closed the door and locked it, and deposited the key in his pocket. The editor, who was engaged in writing, looked up, eyed these notes of preparation with some anxiety, and placing his hand in hie ooat bocom .ninilaJ lU M.nll TU. ..:. -a". 1.1 Ii that there was no euves-droppers, took a seat opposite the editor, and for a moment they gazed silently end calmly at each other. The one, aa we said, was a tall round, well-built, and solid fipure of mankind. The other was short, slim, apparently active and evidently disposed to take mine measures of defence, if suddenly called upon. The visitor quietly said " We are alone, I think t " The editor merely nodded assent. " Yon are unarmed, I see ? " To this there was no reply, but a sort of sneer crossed the face of the gentleman of the quill. " No matter sir, I am twice your aize. I 've reason to winh ynnr death. The key of your door is in my pocket. There ii no one within call, for I looked in every room as I en me up." The editor said nothing, but kept his eye 6xed upon his visitor. " I am a desparate man, and accustomed to scenes of violence. Now, sir, what is there "he said this rising " to prevent me crushing you here beneath my feet, at once, and putting an end to my worst enemy 1 " The editor quietly drew a pistol from his pocket and cocked it but without removing his eyes from the face of his visitor. ' Very good. I see you are provided. It looks like a sood article, too. Bu t iut it up. I did n't come here to murder yon, or I might have done it when I first , entered." And he re seated himself. " Mny I politely inquire your name and purpose, now that wo appear to have a better understanding?" said the editor. " My name ia Wood. I am a professed thief. " Sir," snid the editor, springing to his feet. " Don't be ao impatient," quietly added the visiter. " I did not come here to rob you. And even if it were in any way," carefully looking round, "there is not much here that would repay the link." " Ah, well go on Mr. Wood." " I am a thief sir." " That's candid enough, at any rate, Mr. Wood." "I understand your sneer sir. But I am nciiher a pick.pocket nor a highway robber. I am a burglar, sir, by profession, and well known to most of the po lico." " Do n't you think, sir, that I could as conveniently listen to your confessions with the key in the door t " " You. mistake me again, sir," said the visitor. "I had no intention to carry off your key. But I have something to say, to which I am determined yon shall listen ; and you'll excuse me if I seem rather impatient, and singular in my way of doing business, for I do n't choose to be interrupted." " Go on, Mr. Wood," said the editor. And he threw himself back in his chair, half closed his eyes, and through the other half watched all the motions of his company. My nam ia Wood t I am celebrated aa a burglar. The police know it. But we have a mutual interest 111 supporting each other. If there were no burglars, society would need no police. If there were no police, burglars would be too abundant. All would become burglars, and the business would be unprofitable." "Curious philosophy." ss.r. "-".. i Pin TiaivurDIICr UIUUDK 11 1 IU 10 11 11 Good as any other, sir. besides heini? nmrtiral and founded upon acknowledged social fact instead of in-tallcrfual theories." " Well, wall go on." " I robbed Mr. M 's store, in M street, fha other night. You must have heard of it. Seventeen thousand dollars worth of goods missing in three hours. I flatter myself that was a neat job creditable even to my handiwork." I he editor started. " Oh, it's all right, sir The police know it verv ' well. But they have not the pr.mf. They put, therefore, one.balf the reward offered in one private .pot, and the other, the next day all the missing goods are found. Thia, you'll perceive ii a fair ' busineaa trana-action ' And bi the law must have a victim, a sreen. horn, whom I took into the speculation with mn to watch the door, gets nabbed by the police, and goei to the penitentiary to keep out of further bud association.."" I it possible," mused the editor. " But I did not come hern to boaat. And now after thia preface, which you will find necessary to enable ynn fully to comprehend my position, air, let me explain tho purpose of my visit. 1 have a family a wife and three daughter,. They are respectable, aa the-world calls it. They eat well, drink well, dress well, and were happy, until yon, air, interfered with tbeir felicity, and tried to render them miserable. " I, air, poob !" laid the startled editor. " Yea, sir, you but indirectly of course. Mv fami ly did not ahare my ignomy. they passed in sociely by another name, and having comfortable maana, were always welcomed by troops of frienda iu every quar ter, les. air, tney were nappy. Ana it ever! enjoyed myself in my life it was in thnie moments when,' ' having completed some professional job in a truly artistic manner, I have gone home contented, and listened tn the endearing prattle of my light hearted and in nocent children. Here the robber wiped awny a tear and continued " You, sir. have put an end to all thia felicitv. Yon have snatched from me my only cup of consolation. Yon have plunged four unsuspecting and guiltless creatures into dis ross ; and I have now come, air, to aee if . you have tho heart of a man, or are disposed to ttrow ' witn poison tne me pain oi inese neipieaa neings, aaan atonement for what you may conceive ray depredatione upon tho community? " "I oo n I unaersiana you, air. ' I was temporarily arrested the other day, and discharged. The next day I atarted off for Wilmington, to place my daughter in an elegant achral, to fit Uiam with the accomplishments society deems indispensable. I lolt them there went to Baltimore returned to Wilmington. At the school I found your paper, sir; and your reporter, not content with publishing my arrest, and sneaking of me in terms calculated to indues everybody to look upon me as a loper, gave myosas the name under which my family had lived ao long and so happily, untainted with my professional reputation. My daughters were conrteonsly turned out of school. "When I arrived here, I discovered that my wife had been compelled to abandon our home. The ban was upon us. We had no friends no home. Tha ringer of scorn met ut at every footstep. And though I conld well have borne thia myself, tt almost breaks my heart to aee my innocent wife and children thn. stricken down at it were, by the lightning of tho pres., at my feet." " Upon my toul, it it hard ! " exclaimed the editor. "Hard, tir, I could hnve killed you but murder i. not in my line, and ia seldom profitable." ' " My family are now about to take up a new residence, under a new name. Let that name be aacred, and they may again be happy. Expose it, and as life will be no longer valuable to me, yours will certainly have a tenure limited only by my own. Yon under-atand, sir." 41 PerfectlT. Their name shall never be mentioned not nn account of your threats, however, but on tn r 1 ..it.. It Mr. Wood bowed his thanks and withdrew. " I robbed Mr.
