Never was vindication more com pie to than tbat of Kossuth's character from the charges to maliciously put forth by the attache of the Ad minis) rati on. Tbe statements of tilts official have proved to be throughout base fabrications, and bis uame should be given at once tn the public, that hi foul slanders might bring upon him personally the odium which he io justly merits. We have, from Captain Loko himself, an account of tbe doings of Kossuth while on board the Mitmsippi, and. instead of being auch as to create dissatisfaction, they were from first to last perfectly unexceptionable. At no time was there any tnisunderi landing between the American officers and the brave Hungarian leader; but, on the contrary, the feelinps of respect and admiration wilb which the latter hnd been received rattier grew stronger towards him at his disposition and character became more fully known. It is very fortunate that the Miitimppi reached out port before Kossuth himself. The tissue of falsehoods promulgated Bgntiist him, are now without further effect, and he will be received among us as cordially and warmly as if they had never been written. In fact people seem to blame themselves that they permitted an anonymous communication to sway their minds, io the least degree, against Komuth, until, at least, it wus substantiated by further evidence from other sources. And the consequence is, that the welcome which will uow be tendered him, will probably be more hearty and enthusiastic even thitn it would have been under other circumstances. The committee of our Common Council, who have the mutter in charge, are mukiug entire preparations. It is intended to have three arches upon Broadway, under which he will pass in procession. These will no doubt be handsomely gotten op, and bear suitable and appropriate inscriptions. The Hungarian officers who arrived in the Mitmnppi are at the Irving House. To-day they will visit, with the committee above men tioned, some objects of Interest ou our island, and they will all be publicly received with Koiiuth, on the land ing here of the latter, who is looked for next Wednesday, We have not yet the official returns of the election in this State. The prospects, however, are not quite as flattering as they were. We supposed that we would have a majotiiy of the members of the Canal Hoard, a day or two ago, but just now the chance of this seems hopeless, Tbe official returns, as far as received, vary in some instances very materially from those previously reported. The changes are mostly in favor of the Locos, aud, unless some of a counter kind shall come in, the latter will have matters pretty much in their own hands. Yours, truly, W. SI00DT BATTLE AT KATAX0B08. About noon on Monday, General Carvajul arrived with his forces, and took possession of Kurt Paretics. a short mile from Matamnros, and established his Head Quarters in that fortification, Ho had a body of nearly 800 nu n, chiefly cavalry, now increased to 1000 men ami one brass 4 pounder, uen. His troops are perhaps better armed and equipped for fighting, than any similar body ever was in toe nepuunc oi Mexico, ine streets hnn. ." ppJ - uttxiutiie uetence. Yesterday at 11 o'clock, a portion of General Carva- ial's troops, advanced towards the city, and one col umn toon possession oi tue uarrita, or guani-nouse, at tbe terry opposite Brownsville the other advanced to the rear of the town. A heavy fire of cannon was opened on both lines from Avalos' batteries, which was briskly replied to by Larva mis piece under com mand of Cant. Wheate. Tbe liberators boldly advan ced into tlie town and were soon engaged, almost hand to hand, wnn the enemy. A fierce and determin ed struesle ensued, which lasted till night separated the combatants, A short time before sun-down, sever-' al companies of Oarvajars sharp-shooters, had forced their way through walls and all other Impediments, np tn the Main Plaza, of the city, where they picked off Avalos' gunners and riflemen and silenced most of his tins. ISia lit coming on, Uarvaial withdrew bu troops. till this morning, at which time the combat will be Erotmoiy renewed, inu was a sharp and spirited atlle and resulted in a considerable loss of life. Go the side of the Liberators, two were killed, l'eter Cul ver, of this city, a worthy aud respectable eitixen. and another person, whose name we have not learned and abont a dozen were wouuded, some ot them severely. un ine mie oi Avaios aoout ou were Kilted, and about the same number wounded. Amonir the wound edare Avalos himself, shot through both legs f C-i. Zftpnta, Uummissary uenerai, wounded in the leg; Vasques, aid to me uenerai, unto j uapl. lopez, ol the National Guard. Rafael On intern. President of the Aynntatniento, nnd Lieut. Pineda of the National Guards, were also badly wotinded. Lieut. Llano, of the National Guards, was killed. ' We shall give the particulars in full when the contest is finished. It is enough to say at present that both sides fought brave ly, and that many officers and men greatly distinguish ed themselves. We shall name some of them here after. A reinforcement from Vera Crnx, of 115 men for Avalos, arrived at the Brasos yesterday. They have not yet reached Matamoras. This morning Carvajal was reinmrced oy 1HU men irom ine towns along the river. A determined resistance will bn made, but nothing, we think, can withstand the seal, gallantry, nnd vigor of Carvajnl's men. They are soldiers whom difficulty ennnot weary, danger cannot daunt, and death itself cannot turn from the path of duty aud of honor. During the battle, several cannon balls, fired from Avalos's battery, struck the American shore, at the upper line of houses in this city. We saw them distinctly from our office. Rio Bravo, Oct. 22. The distinguished patriot wns wnrmly welcomed. He spoke in German with great animation and effect for nbriut an hour. He is a gentleman of commanding address, and an orator of unusual ability. He swayed his auditory with the wand of a master, now holding his intelligent countrymen in breathless silence, and anon routing them to the highest pitch ot enthusiasm. His voice, euunciutiiin, in miner anu action, were in the highest decree pleasing, and although we cannot un derstand a word of German, we have seldom io much enjoyed an oratoiicnl f-tlbrt. We lonrn by the New York Express thut the long expected test of the merits of the fire annihilator took place in Tripler Hall on Monday evening. There were a number of the machines upon the stage, and Dr. Colton lectured upon anu explained the invention, i lie Express says t ' At the close of Dr. C.'a lecture a model house was displayed to the audience, which it was proposed to ignite anu men extinguish wnn one or ine anninuainrs. The house was about four feet in height and three feet brond, made of sheet iron nnd filled with a vnriety of combustibles. To these a light whs applied, and when the bluze filled the interior of the house, the rod of one of the small Annihilators was pressed, the charge re ieaseu anu uy it ine names quick ly subdued. 1 he gas, in escaping presented precisely the appearance of ateam, and was, in fnct, in a great proportion, as Dr. O. informed his audience, composed of steam. It was discharged with considerable violence from the tube, and whs exhausted in about three minutes. Wneu the fire had been thus extinguished, the model of a vessel was brought upon the staeo. This was also made of sheet iron, with open port-holes, and filled wilb sha vings. On this, the same experiment was repealed aud with correspouding results." Such tests amount to just nothing at all so far as practical utility iu arresting accidental conflagrations is concerned, and the Express correctly remarks that " heavy sales of tlie Annihilator cannot be sustained and its general adoption cannot be secured until the experimenters forsake experiments in miniature and make some grand triumphant illustration which ibe public mny witness, and by which they will he convinced." Dr. 0. is tn repeat his exhibition iu about a week. Cleveland Herald. KNOWLEDGE FOB THE MILLION. We find the following advertisement in the Cleve land papers, and copy it without request.
