But such men ns we first mentioned, should often be heard. To tliciu is entrusted the infant song of Amorica. It is a most sacred trust, and ono which should not bo neglected. Then let them trim anew tho torch of American poetrv, determined that its uiujo snail no seen ana acknnwlcilgru; and what tlir-v havo already accomplished, in Comparison with that which they may perform, will bo but ns the feeble twilight circle of a swallow to the cloud-clcnring (light of tho eagle or the first faint Hashes of tho gathering storm, to the resistless tires of tho tempest, when il marches in all its pomp nnd power. A very tinam'ar series of occurrences took placo re cently at Memphis, Tennessee. It nppcars, that an obnoxious woman, a widow, known as Mrs. Smith, and supposed to be countenanced by a man ot the name ol Taylor; and perhaps by a Mr. Bond, had lived several years in that place. A few days ago, this Mrs. Smith, lor an olledged indignity, attempted to chastise a highly respcctuble lady, who took rel'ugo in a store. Un the following day, several young men, reputedly of high standing in the town, determined to expel Mrs. Smith from the community; and, with that view, proceeded to her house, and rushed in whereupon Mrs. S., who was alone with her children; fired n gun among them, mortally wounding a ,Ur. Hrynnt. 1 ho rest ol the young men tore down the house, alid destroyed every thing within it. Tho next morning, Mrs. S. was arraigned before a magistrate for shooting Dryant, and acquitted. As soon as she was released, however, the citizens seized upon her, nnd put her again in custody: A town meeting was then culled, and an immense numbur ol citizens, including many ol the most re spcctablo inhabitants of tho place, responded to the call. At that meeting it was resolved, that Mrs. Smith, together with Taylor nnd Bond, should be put into nn open Skiff and set adrift in tho Mississippi; and the sentence was carried into iiumcdinto execution.-Lou.
