Reports of Cases in Chance-ry, from 1778 to 17111, by William Brown, Esq., with Ihe Annotations of Mr. Bell and Mr. Eden. Edited by J. C. Perkins, Est. Four volumes, 8vo. "Brown's Reports embrace Ihe period from 1778 to 17!) I, while Ihe woolsack was occupied in succession by those two master minds, Lord Thurlow and Lord Loughborough. The first appearance of these Reports seems to mark an epoch in the Reports of Chancery not unlike lhat which a little later was established by the Term Reports in the King's Bench. Thenceforward tho judgments in both courts have appeared in an unbroken succession. Brown, therefore, must be considered as the leader of the regular tine of Reports in Chancery."The cases he has reported are of great practical value, a large part of them lying at the very foundation of Chancery, Their importance is attested by the fact lhal Brown's Reports are oftener cited by writers of authority than any other series of Reports in Chancery. In England they have been enriched by leerned and laborious annotations by two diflercnt editors, Mr. Belt and Mr. Eden. Until the present lime, how. ever no edition of them has nppeared in the U. Stales. "We have now before ns ihe first volume of an American edition, which promises lo surpass in interest and practical value any of the English editions of the work; nor do we Relieve lhal there is any edition of any RctHirts thai has ever been published, either in England or America, which is recommended by such useful and ample editorial labors. The notes of Mr. Belt have been retained, and those of Mr. Eden, so far as Ihey could be made supplementary lo these, have been added. Thus the separate labors ol these editors are accumulated on the same page, imparling of itself to the present edition, a higher value than belongs to either of the English editions. In England no similar amalgamation of Ihe two series of notes could lake place, as each is protected by Ihe laws of copyright The notes of the present edition are strictly practical. They are calculated to add essentially to Ihe value of the Reports, as a book of reference in Courts, and of daily use in the profession." RECOMMEHVATIOIVS. Sujoined are a few of the many recommendations from e m nent persons and competent judges in this Slate: From His Excellency, Wilson Shannon, Governor of the Stple of Ohio. Executive Office, Feb. 9, 1844. 1 have examined with some care, Mr. Y'oung's "lntrodue-lion to the Science of Government," and npprove both of the matter and mam er of arrangement. It is a work containing a great deal of highly useful and important information; and its introduction into our common schools, cannot fail to be attended with good resulst. Such a work is greatly needed at this time in our common schools. Il is with great pleasure I recommend it to the patronage and favorable consideration of the public. WILSON SHANNON. From C. P. Mcllvaine, Bishop of the Slate of Ohio. The work by Andrew W. Young, entitled "Introduction lo the Science of Government," Sic, I have had a brief opportunity of examining. It is intelligently and perspicuously written. The interpretation nf Constitutional law seems to me to be just. A studious effort is manifest to ninke all its instruction plain to readers of youthful minds, as well ns those of limited education. Such a book is very desirable in this country; and I have pleasure in recommending this ai calculated to do good. CHAS. P. MclLVAlNE. Gambier, O., Feb, 15, 1844. From James Hoge, D. D., Columbus, O., Dee. 13, 1843. Having an opportunity of looking at the plan of the work "Introduction to the Science of Government, by Andrew W. Young," I rnn say that it appears to be well calculated to imparl knowledge on the important subjects upon which il reals. Especially it may he peculiarly useful 111 schools Too much attention cannot be given to Ihe science of government in this country, where ihe people are the real sovereigns. And it is necessary that Ihe youth of our land should be well instructed in knowledge and virtue, that our free institutions may be perpetuated, and may secure Ihe general welfare. It is to be hoped, therefore, lhal this work, designed for this purpose, will be widely cirrulntcd and will be highly useful. JAMES HOGE. From Timolhv B. Hudson. Prof. Obcrlin Inst.. Dee. 18, 1843. ave examined, lo somo extent, the "Introduction lo Ihe Science of Government," and feel great pleasure in saying that, in my opinion, il is a work wiih which 110 American youth should be unfamiliar. Its excellencies are. its general accuracy, jis great condensation of important information in a small compass, united with remarkable clearness of statement, its fairness and candor in presenting the arguments o opponents , and the extent to which it gives the reasons for the peculiarities of our republican institutions. Though 011 some important topics my opinions might not harmonize with those of the author, I admire the spirit ofhis book, and hop its wide circulation mny richly reward him for his labor. TIMOTHY B. HUDSON. From Rev. J. Covert. Principal of the Columbus Academic and Collegiate Institute, Aug. 20, 1844. Having examined with considerable care the "lntrodue (ion to the Science of Government, by Andrew W. Young,1' 1 deem it a duly lo express my sentiments as lo Ihe merits of Ihe book. The subjects of which it treats arc of Ihe most practicnl and important character. To every freeman tinder our government il is a mailer ol Ihe highest importance and should be of the deepest interest, lo understand something of the nature of our civil institutions and laws. The elementary principles of the science of government should lie thoroughly studied and well understood by every sovereign voter and freeman in our land; for upon this knowledge Ihe perpelnily and prosperity of this nation must measurably depend. No treatise upon this subject now in use, will be found more entertaining nnd instructive than Ihe little manual 10 which I refer. The style is perspicuous, yet familiar and easy, and I believe il to be well adapted for use, as a text book, in our academics as well as our common and select schools. 1 have introduced il into the institution of whirh I have the charge and shall continue its use, and I sincerely hope il mny gain an extensive circulation, and command a prominent place among ihe lexl books of our schools and academies, and Ihe libraries of private citizens.
