BROWN S CIIANCERYReportsofCasesin Chancery, from 1778 lo 7'JL by William Brown, Esq., wilh the Annotations of Mr. Bell and Air. Eden. Edned by J. C. Perkins, Esq. Four volumes, 8vo. "Ilrown'a Reports embraco Ihe period from 1778 lo 1734, while the woolsack was occupied in succession by those Iwo master minds. Lord Thurlow and Lord Loughborough. The first appearance of these Reports seems to mark an epoch in Ihe Reports of Chancery not unlike thai which a little later was established by ihe Term Reports in the King't Bench. Thenceforward the judgments in both courts have appeared in an unbroken succession. Brown, therefore, must be considered as the leader of the regular line of Reports in Chancery."The cases he has reported are of great practical value, a large part of them lying at the very foundation of Chancery, f heir importance is attested by the' fact that Brown's Reports are oftcner cited hy writers of authority lhan any olher series of Reports in Chancery. In England Ihey have been enriched by learned and laborious annotations by two dillerenl editors, Mr. Bell and Air. Eden. Until the preserl time, how. ever no edition of Ihem has appealed in the U. Stales. "We have now before us Ihe first volume of an American edition, which promises to surpass in interest and practical value any of Ihe English editions of Ihe work; nor do we believe thai there is any edition of any Reports thai has ever been published, either in England or America, which is recommended by such useful and ample editorial labors. The notes of Mr. Belt have been retained, and those of Air. Eden, so far at Ihey could he made supplementary lo these, have been added. Thus ihe separate lalwirs of these editors are accumulated on Ihe tame page, imparting of itself lo the present edilion, a higher value than belongs to either of llie English editions. In England no similar amalgamation of llie iwo series of notes could lake place, at each is protected by the laws of copyright The notes of the present edition ere sir icily practical. They are calculated to add essentially lo llie value of Ihe Reports, as a book of reference ia Courts, and of daily use in tire profession." Late K porter for May.
