C. STEWART A CO. C. BRIJNCKEKIIOFFS a. THIS medicine, when first introduced, some vears since met with opposition and deadly aimed hostility from ignorant and vapid declaimers, w ho threw their darts of venom at it, clashing it among tlie nostrums of the age. Those fruitless attempts to injure this great medicine, have now passed away ; the base individuals who I'oBtered them have shrunk away, conscious of their mistaken -teal, and lett the Restorative to proudly r.nik itself as the first and greatest medicine of the age. Consumption, that terrific destroyer of the beautiful and lovely of our our kind. Liver Com plaints, Coughs and Colds, Pains in the Breast and Side, and the concomitant evils, are rendered harmless and inert when met by a prompt and lAeieitl use of the Restorative. Most opportunely, the efforts of the proprietor to place his inval-ii utile compound before the public are now in the way of being crowned w ith success ; and in every place where the angel of destruction under the cloak of disease can be found, the Health Restorative shall drive him afar, and raiso up the suffering mortals, ami open to them the joys of a state of renewed health ami energies. What a blessing to tlie ncarlv bereaved relatives, to witness tlie opportune aid institling'new lite into the almost deceased endeared one. Heed the voice of earnest and brotherly expostulation and entreatv.and resort at Met, while there is yet time, to that ( best of all earth's treasures to the almost hopeless sick one, the Heallh Restorative. The following certificate is from Dr. Chilton, the well known rew ork t hennst : I have analyzed a bottlfl of medicine called C. Brinker lioirs Health Restorative,' and find that it does not contain .Mercury, or any otlier metallic preparation, nor opium in nnv of its forms. It is composed of vegetable matter en-lirely." OHIO STATE JOUMAL. From the New York Spirit of the Tiroes. A .Mysterious Lodger. BV M Mo nil lawQI, The upper apartment uf uur boarding house, that is to nay a portion of the garret, was hired at an exceeding low price of the landlady, by a young gentleman who gave li is name as Barnabas Stoller. He was aluiut twenty-five years of age, dressed in a rusty suit of black, ami the unfortunate possessor of a countenance which would have secured ins success ai the poor apothecary in "Romeo and Juliet." He sel dom had any communication with the other bonrders. and there was a certain air of mystery about him, that puzzled every body in the house no one could tell the nature of his business nor cive information of the slightest circumstance touching his general course of me. .10 one ever inquireu tor mm at tlie limine, ex-ceptiiirr at meuls, at which he was punctual, and which he devoured vociferously; he remained while within the walla, necludud in his npiirttueiit the partitioned portion of the garret above mentioned. The landlady, who certainly possessed as much curiosity as any member of the fair sex witli whom it has ever been my good fortune to have any dealings with, had sounded every body in order to gain some clue to the mystery which enveloped Mr. Stoller, but without satisfaction. She had even propounded many circuitous inquiries to me gentleman himselt, but received only vague replies which but increased her excitement. He regularly paid his board every Saturday night, and always in coin of the smallest description, which he drew from a well worn leather purst?. He had resided in the house but a single month, when the landlady discovered the following astounding and incomprehensible fact: Every Saturday afternoon, about the hour of four, Mr. Barnabas Stoller entered the house and proceeded directly to Ins apartment, and having audibly turned the key in the lock, would remain secluded for full three hours! This proceeding occurred regularly every Saturday, and by divers means did Mrs. Jones, the landlady, endeavor to solve the mystery of his temporary retirement. Once or twice she had been detected by one of the lodgers, peering through Mr. Stroller's key hole, hut it being ohstructcd on the inner side by the key, it was somewhat difficult to obtain an accurate view of the premises. Nevertheless, by dint of waiting with her ear to the door for many minutes, the worthy dame had heard strange indefinite sounds arising from within, which, although they convinced her that something was progressing, cast but little light upon the subject of her investigations. "Betty," she remarked to her maid of all work one day, after one of those visits to the entry above, "what can he be doing every Saturday nt this particular time?" "I'm Burc I can't imngine, ina'nui," replied the girl thus addressed, "unless he's a counterfeiter." "A counterfeiter," exclaimed Mrs. Jones, "very likely Bettv, and most probably a counterfeiter of half dollars, for he pays me every Saturday in small change, for which he must have exchanged his spurious money hut then, Betty," added the landlady, "he could hardly make a living at counterfeiting if he works at it only three hours in the week." "No ma'am, that's true," answered Betty, "but still I am satisfied he must be doing aoinething horrible though. The landlndy cogitated sometime deeply, and then shaking her head slowly fromside to side, spoke again: Well, Betty, he may be a conspirator he may have some horrible plot in his head, and I really don't feel sale in the house with him, unless I can discover what he does so slyly every Saturday so lo night I'll ask him boldly at supper in what way he employs himself regularly once a week in his room." At the first sound of the bell tlie inmates of the house Docked to supper, and among tho loremost was the unconscious Stoller, dressed in his only suit of black. lie sealed himself and commenced with his UMLtl voracity upon the provisions before him, the hoarders were nil seated and welt engaged; Betty was standing behind her mistress' chair, with a face upon which anxiety and curiosity were deeply blended no sound was heard save clattering of knives and forks, with now and then the rattle of a teaspoon in the cup. The landlady feeling that this washer time, made a strong efl'urt, and exclaimed " Mr. Stoller!" Now the mere mention of Mr. Stoller B name by Mrs. Jones at the lea table, could not certainly attract extraordinary attention, but the manner and the lone of the lady started many of the boarders sitting I many dropped their knivea and forks, and cast their eyes rapiuiy ironi mrs. Jones to Mr. Stoller the latter gentleman suspended his attacks on the supper and gazed with an agilated countenance at the head personage ot' the Iioubc. " Mr. Stoller !" said Mrs. Jones, speaking slowly in order to give every word its due emphasis "you are prohahly aware that I endeavor to carry on the affairs of my house as honestly and circumspectly as possible' there was a pause, several lodgers nodded, and one, who was noted for being remiss in paying his board when due, intimated in an audible voice that the domestic economy of Mrs. Jones' house was not excelled by that of any similar establishment in the city. " Mr. Stoller," continued Mrs. Jones, " will you be kind enough to inform me if you can, what business detains you in your room every Saturday between the hours of four and Beven in the afternoon ! " All gazed at Mr. Stoller, anxious to have the important question settled, his agitation had been increasing to a fearful extent during Mrs. Jones' remarks, and upon hearing her inquiry he started to his feet ; his face was deeply crimsoned, and ho strove for boiiic minutes in vain to speak. " Ma'am," cried he at lat "You ! You ! I cannot now!" he stopped suddenly kicked over his chair and dashed out of the room. No pen can describe the astonishment of the spectators at Una unprecedented exit ; Mrs. Jones started to her feet, and when she at length found her voice, addressed Ihe company: "Now, gentlemen !" said she, " 1 am satisfied that .Mr. Stoller must be engaged in some horrible plot in his room regularly every Saturday some counterfeiting scrape or forgery at any rate some matter which will most likely destroy the credit of my house ; I'm sure you must all agree with me when I say, that this horrible secret must be drawn from him hy Borne means or other 1 know from the fright which seized him when I asked him the question, that there ib something going wrong." Here Mrs. Jones hesitated, waiting to be assisted from her difficulty by some of the hoarders present. " Suppose," said one, "that the next time he shuts himselt up in his room, we all go in a body and break open the door." This brave proposition was immediately put down as being entirely too belligerent in its general features. " Couldn't some one slide down the roof of the house and peep in the window? ' asked another doubtfully. "Tlut might do, ' said Mrs. Jones, looking round upon the company in hopes to discover some one who would undertake the task, but no one moved, for the roof being a slated one and very steep, was consequently too hazardous to be trusted u a foothold. " I think," said one yonng gentleman at the head of the table, " if we should all get together next Saturday afternoon and cry fire ' in the entries, we might bring linn out and then discover his employment." "Ah !" exclaimed Mrs. Jones, " that s a good plan but it would be liable to raise the neighborhood but I think we'll close all the doors and windowi and try it at any rate it cannot do much harm " In fine the last was considered by the company to ie a most excellent plan tor the detection ot Mt. otol-ler in his dreadful plots, and the requisite arrangements were made on the spot Nothing wss said to Mr. Stoller during the week, and when Saturday afternoon at last arrived, the greater part of the boarders were in their rooms, waiting his arrival. At the usual hour of four, the suspected lodger entered the house, and proceeded as was his custom, immediately to his room. His doorhsd been locked about half an hour, a large part v of the bourd-its. headed by Mrs. Jones, was stealthily formed in the lower hall, and different detachments were then filed off to separate portions of the house, and t wo gentlemen more courageous than the rest, stationed themselves close to Mr. Stoller h room, ready to glide in and examine tne apartments as soon as he Bhould open tha door. All these preliminaries being arranged, Mrs. Jones; a"u .er ervant Betty, raised a heart-rending shriek in the kitchen, and then dashed un to the enlrv. TH- party in the lower halls slammed the doors, and at the top of their voices screamed " Fire !" The united efforts were comnletflv n..n.i suddenly Mr. Stoller's door opened and out rushed th gentleman himself. His coat was bulloned up about his neck, and his sleeves turned up, leaving the lower portion of his arms bare ; in his hands he held a whit article, dripping with water " What is the matter, Mrs. Jones f cried he, looking with astonishment upon the crowd that had collected about his door. No answer was returned, and the two courageous gentlemen who had insinuated themselves into his room, sneaked out again. No cry of " fire " was now heard, and a dim lio-ht broke over Mr. Stoller's mind he saw the trick. "Ah, gentlemen," said he, slowly, "I see now how it is ; will a few of you gentlemen have the kindness, to step into the room with Mrs. Jones, and all the mystery shall be explained." They crowded in, the landlady taking the lead, and his room was completely filled. 'IMow, gentlemen, said he, slowly, "you have all taken such an interest in my affairs that it is but just that you should all be indulged with the knowledge of the strange secret which has so much harassed your minds. You see, gentlemen, that wssh basin, and in tho chimney corner you will perhaps observe a few burning embers, and in my hands you will notice an article, concerning which I hope there can be no mistake, and, gentlemen, by putting all these things to- mosuri you win easily uiscover in, ai an appointed nine every oaiuruay aiternoon " i nai you no witw cried neveral voices anxiously, as Mr. Stoller pauBcd. "Hash and dry my only shirt for Sunday.'" The room was cleared in an instant, and that niivht the "mysterious lodger" paid his board and left the house forever. A Man and Tiger Combat. The next scene was uf a far more awful character. A man entered the arena, armed only with a Coorg; knife, and clothed in shurt trowsers. which bsrelvenv. ered his hips, and extended half way down the thighs. lhu iiiairunieui wmcn ne wielded in his right hand wan u very neavy oiaue, something like the coulter of a plough, about two feet long, and full three inches wide, gradually diminishing towards the handle, with which it formed a Tight angle. This knife is used wilh great dexterity by the Coorgs ; being swung a-round in the hand before the blow is inflicted, and then brought into contact wilh the object intended to be struck with a force and effect truly astonishing. The champion who now presented himself before the rajah was to be opposed to a tiger, which he vol unteered to encounter almost naked ; and armed only with the weapon 1 have just described. He wus rather tall, with a slight figure, but his chest was deep, his arms long and muscular. His legs were thin, yet the action of the muscles was perceptible with every movement; whilst the freedom of his gait, and the few contortions he performed, preparatory to the haz ardous enterprise with which he was about to engage, showed that ho possessed uncommon activity, comb.- ueu wun no urumnry uegree oi strength, i lie expression of his countenance was absolutely sublime when ue gave me signal ior me tiger to oe lei loose ; it was the very concentration of moral eiienrv. the index of high and settled resolution. His body glistened with tho oil which had been rubbed over it in order to pro mote the elasticity of his limbs. He raised his arm for several moments above his head, when he made a motion to admit his enemy into the arena. The bars of a large cage were instantly lifted from above ; a largo royal tiger sprang forward and stood before the Coorg, waving his tail slowly backward and forward, ereclinir his hair upon it, and uttering a suppressed howl. The animal first looked at the man, then at the gallery wnere me rajan anu uis court were sealed to see the sports, but did not appear at all uneasy in its present .aw: in euum , u was cviuenuy coniounaeo at tho novelty of its position. After a short survey, it turned suddenly round and bounded into its cage, from which the keeper, who stood above, bevond the reach of mischief, tried to force it, but in vain. The bars were then dropped, and several crackers fastened to its laii, which projected through one of the intervals. A lighted match was put into the hand of the Coorg, the bars were again raised, and the crackers ignited. The tim-r now darted into the arena with a terrifh yell ; and while the crackers were exploding, it leaped, turned and writhed, as if in a state of frantic excite ment. It at length couched in a corner, as a cat does when alarmed. Meanwhile the retreat was cut off by securing the cage. During the explosions of the cracKers. ihe L oorg stood watching his enemy, and at length advanced toward it with a slow but firm step. The tiger aroused itself and retreated, the fur on his back being erect, and its tail apparently dilated to twice its usual size. It was not at all disposed to com-mence hostilities, but its resolute foe wai nnt t h evaded. Fixing his eye intently upon the deadly crea- wv, m .m,,iin wun isbbj same measured step, tho tiger retreating as before, but still presenting his front to its enemy. The Coorg now stopped suddenly ; then moving slowly backward, the tiger raised itself lo its full height, curved its back to the necessary segment for a spring, and lashed its tail, evidently meditating mischief. The man continued to retire j and aa soon as he wns at so great a distance that the fixed expression of his eye was no longer distinguishable, the ferocious brute made a audden bound forward, erouched and sprung with a short sharp growl. Its adversary, fully prepared for thia, leaped actively on one side, and as the tiger reached the ground, swung round his heavy knife, and brought it with irresistible force upon the animal's hind leg, just above the joint. Tho bone was instantly severed, and the tiger effectually prevented from making a second spring. The wounded beast roared, but turning suddenly upon the ...1 k-.il : Bj r . The tiger, now extited to a pilch of reckless rage, rushed forward upon its three lejra towards its adversary, whn stood with his heavy knife upraised, eslmly wsiting the encounter. As soon as the savage creature was within his reach, he brought down the ponderous weapon upon his head, with a force which nnthimr could resist, laid open the skull from ear to ear, and the vanquished foe fell dead at his feet. He then coolly wiped the knife on the animal's hide, and re tired amid the loud acclamations of the spectators. Oriental .hinual. Si.a vF.-HrnTtn Kn r.Fi. He sel dom had any communication with the other bonrders. and there was a certain air of mystery about him, that puzzled every body in the house no one could tell the nature of his business nor cive information of the slightest circumstance touching his general course of me. .10 one ever inquireu tor mm at tlie limine, ex-ceptiiirr at meuls, at which he was punctual, and which he devoured vociferously; he remained while within the walla, necludud in his npiirttueiit the partitioned portion of the garret above mentioned.
