From its commencement, till Ihe present time, I doubt if we bare bad two days in sncceision of sunshine. The weather, too, baa been cold, and in thisritpect, very different from that which we expect at this season. I waa rather surprised this morning, at seeing- the proereta which has been alreadv maris in the nn. struction of the Sixth Avenoe Railroad. Some weeka bad elapsed since I was last in tbe Sixth Avenne, and in the meanwhile, I find that tbe work then scarcely commenced, lias been pushed forward vigorouily. By tbe first day of July, tbere can be little doubt that the road will be completed, and in operation. In this rail road, our citizens take much interest, and especially those of them who bad been long accustomed to hope that the good time would one day coma when the om-nibuasea would cease to monopolize Broadway, for now they think that this hope of theira will be soon realized. It teems strange that a railroad on the worst tide of tbe city waa not built several yeara ago. It was needed, and would nave saved, in a great degree. the confusion which hat prevailed tince in Broadway. For iu this cate, tne number ot tbe omnibussee would never have inoreased to that which it now it', but would have remained comparatively small. But for tome reason, though many atlempta have been made, every project to build a railroad for city travel, waa hilherto unsuccessful. Our Common Council have decided that Broadway shall be swept. Thit would have been joyont newt, even if the resolution bad not been more specific in ita terms. For then, sometime during the official exist ence of this body, we could anticipate one day wben the broom would be applied to the removal of the dirt from that thoroughfare. But we have fuller reason to be glad. Broadway is not only to be swept, but during the months, from'April to October, it it ti be twept aa often at three timet a week. I am afraid our City Father have imposed on themselves a task, which, in tbe fulfillment of the same, will prove severer than they ean endure. Tbey should have commenced by having the streets twept once every year) then once every month ; then once a fortnight, and to on. In thit way the change from the present custom to the new order about to be introduced, would be gradual and perhaps more lasting, t or wbo Knows wbetber tbey can sur vive the summer, with such an undertaking, and if they yield up the work in despair, when shall we ever get another Common Council, possessing sucb laudable intentions? Broadway swept three timet a week! Why, " tbe oldest inhabitants," though wont to travel it daily, may fail to recognize the street, notwiihitjnd- ng the many other of its failures with which be hat een always laminar. Youri truly, W. 007. JONES, 07 IEK5E88EE. Thit distinguished statesman lately made a brilliant ipeech in the U. S. Senate, against the doctrine of in tervention. It was an ellort ot great merit, and placed im in the front rank among the orators of that body. A correspondent of the Baltimore Clipper tbut concludes hit notice nf the speech, and the man. It will be read with interest, at be it a prominent candidate for Vice President in the coming campaign l " The gifft of some men are wonderful to behold i One of the secrets of Oov. Jones' power and invariable success in debate, perhaps, lies in the wondrously concentrated, singleminded momentum with which he hurls himself on his adversary. Whether on tbe stump or in the Senate Chamber, this momentum thelightning-like rapidity witb which he attacks in front, flunk and rear; the brilliant flashes of eloquence constantly breaking out and blinding the enemy, while ihe stunning blows fall from bit stalwart arm like rain whether before the people or in the grand arena of senatorial strife, this strange gift of momentum power-force call it what you will is equally resistless, and has never failed to win bim the victory against all odda and from tbe very decrees ot late herself. "The treat and leading characteristic of Got. Jones' career hitherto, has been his readiness and ability on tbe instant, to grapple wilb, and rise superior to any emergency that might occur. He seems to have within bim a native, untaught, unacquired power, which, whenever occasion offers, forces him np to a level-nay, always above the oldest beads, the brightest intellects, the strongest arms, with which be may be brought into tntagonism. Scarcely yet in hia fortieth year, he baa won twice as many victoriea on tbe alump and in the forum, as any other man of bis age in tbe Union. Of a tall, lithe, lean ' form, weighing but little above a hundred pounds, but glowing with health, and as well knit as an Indian runner, bis frame is equal to the severest and most protracted labor, and it animated with vital energy enough for tbree tucb men. Potsetsing in early youth comparatively limited advantages of education, aince his attainment to manhood he has been busily storing bia mind from all the garners of knowledge; and now, wilb hia unresting teal, tireless industry, and indomitable resolution, soarcely feels the want of those advenlitioua aids to mental culture to difficult to be obtained in Tennessee twenty-five years ago, and which, indeed, are amply compensated for by a combination of natural gif.t, amounting in him to genius. "Add to all this a noble mien and lofty dignity of carriage, a gay and winning address, a bland and manly courtesy es bland and free among the farmers of tbe bills and vallevs of Tennessee, aa in the salonna nf tha great as frank and hearty among the poor aa among tbe rich, with Ibe young as with the old and yon have the portrait of one of the most remarkable men of the age the conqueror of Polk, the Clinton of the South. Such is the man who from bit place the other day in the Senate, in a ipeech of tingular eloquence and power, and winch t commend to tbe perusal of all my countrymen, sent the last murderous broadsider into the long, low, rakish-looking' craft ycleped 'Non- Intervention, oucn is tbe man wbo triumphed over 8eward and 0 'SS. And sucb the man who. sooner or later, (it may be sooner than we think,) will be called on to assume tne neim ana guide tbe destinies of tbis republic." Sihxx. A public sheep shearing cornea off in Tiffin, on Wednesday next The sheep are from Vermont, and some of tbe best from that State. The University of Rochester bat received a valuable collection of native Chinese works from Dr. Dean of China. Among tba collection, ia tbe New Testament in Manchu, Hiodostanee, Bengalese, and Sanscrit. It is tbe highest duty, privilege, and pleasure of great men and whole-souled women to earn what they possess, to work their own way through life to be the architects of their own fortune. Cincinnati is celebrated fur a peculiar kind nf mu known as the ' Cincinnati treat." An individual ia aeked to partake of wine, oysters, rfcc, and then left to font tbe bill. Tbia was tbe " hospitality " extended to Kossulh. LnttitvilU Jcntrnal. I V " I have come for my umbrella," aaid a man to his neighbor, in tbe height of a rain, who had bor rowed bis. " Can't help it; I am going oat wiih it." Well bat but what am I lo dot" Dot" raising it and walking off, do as 1 do ; borrow one." The editor of the Democrat asser's, or intimates that a man must be a great blockhead to call him " an intelligent gentleman." Thus it seems that our dear neighbor has not the independence to think differently from ihe rest nf the commiioiiy even ia regard to bim. ell. He it the vassal of public opinion. LtminilU Journal. Tbis is one of "Prentice's last" hits. Every heart has ils secret sorrow, which the world knowa not; and oftentimes we call a man cold, whan, ha ia only sad.

Hails bio State Idurnal. FBIDAY MORNING, APBIL 30, 1852. C0SBZ8P0NDXHCX. Ni w York, April S3, 1852. We beve every indication of notber storm. April has been rainy month here.
