This interesting phenomenon, wbicb oc.nrred thia Hftorrjnon ia a beanlifully clear ky, was observed at the Obatiryutoiy containing the instruments of Columbia College, when) a (iue large Telescope, aine incline upertuie, lieloDging to Mr. Rutherford, (just inauufuctared by Mr. Henry FilZ of ihi city,) w mounted otsly a day or two aince. There were thtee Observera: Mr. Eutherford with llie ninn inch, Mr. Ki'z wilu a ix inch, ami Mr. Bull wiih a three inch Telecote. With the tiina inch instrument, one i.f Dent' beat Chronometers, kindly furnished by Messrs. Blunt, was employed, and one of Arnold's with ibe olher instruments. The first conti;t WHsjlost by Mr. Rutherford, owing to the use of a diaonnl eye piece which misled him as to tbe point nf the Sun's disk to be watched. The contact was first observed by Mr. Fit with the six i ii'.li. ami u second idler by Mr. Bull. We give Mr. Fifz's observations in llie results below. Previous to the contact, the Moon's limb was looked (or, wiih a combination of green and violet colored shades, giving a perfectly whitoSuu, but without success. No corruscations were observed to shoot across the Moon's surface. The surface of the Sun's disk was in vain searched over for a solar spot, not one was visible, so that the phenomena of illumination or repulsion of the spot could not be tested. The laat contact was observed by the three telescopes : with the six inch by myself, with tbe Ibree inch by Mr. B ill, and with the nine inch by menns of a moat heuuiiltil imnge, with a short outline of both the Sun's and Moon's disk, on a screen of white drawing paper by Mr. Ruiherford. Mr. Rutherford saw the limbs in contact a second and a half later than Mr. Bull and myself. Mr. Bull noticed the indentation apparently of a very conical mountain, just before the Moon passed oil' the Suu, immediately below the Moon's disk, iu the inverting telescope. The following ure the times of first and last contact, the farmer by Mr. Filz's observations, the latter by Mr. Rulliet ford's, whose image, on theBcreen. wus held in perfect stillness by the clock work movements attached to the Fraunhofer eqiiatotial mounting of the large telescope: First contact 4 lis., 15 min., 35 81-100th sec. Last contact Ii lis , 37 min , 45 98-100ih sec. Tile lim s me rueiin solar time nt the observatory. Observation wiih tho tratiait inurnment and siderinl clock, mid com pui isous of the chronometers wiih the latter, were mndo immediately after th eclipse, and the tenulting times ate loose given above. Instrumental trrors were not allowed lor, but will be, in a more careful alu'emeut which will bo published hereafter, together will the exact latitude of the Observatory, for which observations are now being made. It is approximately 40 43' 48". Its longitude is given with groat accuracy iu the new American Nautical Almanac. N. Y. Courier. AGRASBtiorrm Roast Among thechoice delicacies with which the Digger Indians regale themselves tlua ring tbe summer season, says the Empire County Argun, is the grasshopper roust. Having been an eyewitness to the preparation and discussion of one of their fensts of gstioppeis, we cau describe it truthfully. There are districts iu California, as well as portions of the pluins between the Sierra Nevatla and the Rocky Mountains, that literally Bwnrm with grass' hoppers, and in such axtonialiing numbers that a man Cdmiot pIhco his foot to the ground while walking there without crushing great numbers. To the lndiau they are a delicacy, and are caught and cooked in the following manner: A piece of ground ia sought where they most abound, in the centre of which an excavation is made, large and deop enough to prevent the insect from hoppitij out wlieit once in. Th entire party of Diggers, old and young, male and female, tui n surrouiot aa imtoUof the adjoin! ag groaudsas they can, and with each a green bough in hand, whipping and tbtashing on every side, gradually approach the centre, driving the insects before them in countless multitudes, till at last all, or nearly all, are secured in the pit. In the menntime smaller excavations are ni'ido, answering the purpose of ovens, in which fires are kindled aud kept up till the surrounding ear'.b, lor a short distunce, becomes sufficiently heated, together with a flat stone large enough to cover the oven. The grasshoppers are now taken in coarse bags, and after being thoroughly soaked in water for a few moments, are empiied in the oven and closed in. Ten or fifteen minutes suffices to roa.st thorn, when they are taken out and eaten without further preparation, and with much apparent relish, or, as is sometimes the case, reduced to powder aud made into soup. And having from curiosity tasted, not the soup, but the roast, real ly if one could but divest himself of the idea of eating an insect as we do an oyster or a shrimp, with olber propara'.ion than simply roasting, they would not be considered very bad eating, eveu by more rsfined epi cures than the Digger Indians. St. Louis Dim. tip The Buffalo ' Democracy ," in a strong Prohibi. tory Liquor Law article, says : All over this land are men of education aud of genius, drunk daily, nightly able, valuable men, stumb ling with drunkenness into gutters that get pitiable and disgusting, with all their intellects, down in Doise-somn holes, fit places only for natural blackguards and villains carried ofl' to their homes in delirium tremens valuable and admirable men, loved of wives and li'tle children, and mourned over by gray haired mothers, flying inch by inch, an imbruting and a horrid death, who CAN'T resist the temptation to driuk, presented to them at every furlong of their way. Every town in New York has its living and its dead instances of this kind. Nearly every family in the State has it painful memories of an erring and lost relative, icho could not be saved. Now, noihing short of the totul removal of the means of drunkenness, entire ly out of si "lit and out of reach, will save these men. They talk of voluntary abstinence. They inevitably will ruin and die, by thousands, unless the publicly exposed und easily attained means of theirself-de-atrtiction- ure sweptout of the Slate. A case of cowhiding is told by the Rochester Advera User, of an athletic citizen til that place, who proposed to wind up a spree with a ride into the country For thia ptirposi! be procured the conveyance, and wished Ins w.fe tu accompany him, which she declined to do, for the reason that he was too drunk for good company or a siifo driver. On thia he became much enraged. and proceeded to abuse, when she possessed herself of the whip nud gave bim a good tanning. Having per. formed this duty, she went to the Police Ollice, nud made complaiut against her wayward companion, and returned with an i lltcer to lake the delinquent into custody. Ae tbn officer was unacquainted with the party, ho desired tbe woman to point him out, which she did, on reaching his whereabouts, by administering a second dose of whip, well put on. Bayard Tatlor at Oberlin. Bayard wns com plimented in nn unexpected manner, when he lectured recently at Oberlin. The lecture was preceded and succeeded by music, set to pieces of Bayard's own poetry, by Professor Allen. It is said tho lecturer wus greatly allecteu when tho noble choir struck the first line of a piece written by him on a homeward journey to see hi betrothed, who wus sick, and whom he afterward married just before her demise. Tbe poem commences thus : " From the bosom of ocean I seek thee." The closing piece was tho " The Storm Song," com menciiig: " rho clouds aro scudding across ths moon." Ohio Columbian. A California Law Cask. At tho suggestion of tbe Judge, the parties agreed to decide it by a horserace, aud actually did so ; the Jury acted as Judges, the counsel bet thoir fees on iheir respective clients, tile Judge held the stnltes, and the winner, by pre vious agreement, treated tbo crowd ! -TOR SALE.
