On a slope of land, stretcliintr towards the South, in one of the pleasant town? of iveniucky, tiiere miirht once have been seen a comfortable cottage, whose air of neatness and thrift might well excite the approbation of the passer-by. Such cottages crowning such fertile fields ought, it j would seem, to be no unfrequent sieht. and in many States, thank God, they are not. A stranger, curious as to the indwellers of the houses upon which he gazed, would hardly have known to what class of Ken- tuckiuns to appropriate this coltase. It evidently did not belong to any of the many wealthy citizens, with whom this portion of the country is so unusually fa vored, and it was altogether too comforta ble in its surroundings, too neat and thrifty in us wnoie appearance, to belong to any poor white. Any one in the neighborhood could have ioia you, (had you chanced to have been the inquirer,) that this house belonged to rwn, anu niese rolling, mellow, smiling fields rejoiced in the name of Kitville Kit himself would have been delighted to answer all your questions, and it is not long since early on almost any fine morn ing in tne year, you might have seen him, tall, robust, cheerful, coal black negro that ne was, standing in his own door, drink ing in with a.i eve never wearv of the draught, the sweet sight of all his little possessions. Kit had once been owned bv a wenlihv fanner, in the neighborhood, and a very vmuauie piece oi property Jie was. But besides all he did for his master. lie did thus much for himself: he made himself tns own master. Once a free man, his after work was comparatively easy. Before many years, he had purchased the land and built the house of which we have spoken. Then came the lait and crown ing reward of his labors he bought Mary his wife. Now indeed Kit began to live. Mary was no drag on her husband. En terprising as himself, who can tell the sat. isfaction with which they added article af- ler arucie, iirtt tne useuj. then the orna mental, to the furnishing of their little home ? Many summers and winters had they looked forward to the good time comingmany hours of hard labor hnd the thought of liberty and home sweetened, and now they seemed indeed to have entered into their rest. Kit worked with a will, and so did Ma ryand every year showed, in new and substantial comforts added to their little domain, their increasing prosperity. They had but one child, born after Mary had been purchased by her husband. One of the pleasures Mary enjoyed with the most pride, was invitintr her ladv friends to take tea with her and often and often was her old mistress, between whom nnd herself there existed a stronu attachment. happy to visit her and no coffee was stronger, no bread lighter, no cake richer, man JYiar" served up to her honored guests. So went by year after year, brinsrinp; its appointed sorrows to you and me, it may be, but to the Kits only an increase of comfort, and honest, and we are sure, excusable pride. But at last the visitor, who sooner or later enters every dwelling, came to Kitville. Its master was seized with the cholera, and after a few hours of anguish and agony, died. foor Mary was perfectly appalled with terror at tne leartul disease, and not until tne breath had left the poor bod v. ovpr wnicn sne Had iiung with unavailing ex ertions for relief, did she once think of her self. 1 hen as her tearful eves went line-. eringly over the many household comforts wnich their mutual love and labor had col lected, and on which they were no more to iook togetner, a sudden thought arrested, as it were, tha very life in her veins. caused Her iresh grief to sink into nothing ness, and forced such a cry from her lips as might have waked to life again the dead sleeper at her side. Kit had never made her free. He had always intended doing so, put as tne necessary steps involved considerable trouble, he had put it off from time to time, supposing always that he should have at least the warning of a sick bed before his death. But now he was gone, and supposing the law should take its course, whose and what was she? She covered up her face, and bade tho miserable thought be far from her. After all these years of lreedom and respecta a .a . w . 4 bility, she must live out the remainder of her life a free woman, mistress of herself and her own house. I oor Mary ! alas ! poor, poor Marv ! Well might you think, when your true situation was forced home upon you, that it were better had you never been born. uod lorgive you, that for a little while you almost hated the memory of your husband lor his Jatal neglect. You are not free your child is not free this house, these comforts are not yours. 1 he law cives them all to your husband's nearest heir: and a slave, were she the truest and faith- fullest wife that was ever helpmeet to a husband, can be no heir. All these treas ures which you have been so long garnering up, the sweeter treasure which you vainly linnpined yours, your liberty, the treasure fur sweeter than all, your child . L.l...,!'- - r ' i'hb3 iu yuui iiuoiuiiiu 0 qimci, u iree woman of color; and be you sure, that what the law allows and court awards, she will claim. And now ciune changed days, for trrief . i i ii - i .. stricken, nan crazeu aiary. The new owner moved into the valuable little dwell ng, and shiltless and lazy, she looked to ler Rervaut lor support. o Mary is hired out ; all day she bends low over her wash tub, the salt tears falling unchecked and nrestrained, and at niiht she must tell hpr earnings into the hard hand of her hated mistress for need we say that the bondage which binds her to one of her own color seems doubly accursed to .Mary ? All that is wicked in her nature, would not be so roused up to chafe her spirit into almost unendurable impatience of her lot,' were she now owned by her former kind old mistress. But to sit a captive, where she had reigned queen, to work all day for one to whom she eould in no way look up to feel herself as surely a slave as though owned by the richest lady, in the land, this was indeed to drain the dregs from the bitter cup. What wonder that the sympathy felt and expressed for her seemed an empty mockery ? What wonder that from being one of the most active workers when do- ng for herself and family, she became, to use her mistress s own Dhrase. 'a most or'- nary nigger.' Every day her wages be-eama less and less every day the enmity oeiween ner anu ine woman who calls herself her ownor, grew more and more bit ter, until at length the dreaded threat of selling to the South was lifted up against poor Mary. Only one natural affection seems left to this wretched, fevered heart she loves her child she loves too the scene of her former glory harrowing as the contrast between that lime and the present is and there are moments when her love for her husband, and her longing to be with him, outrides and overwhelms all her other miseries, and at such times it comforts her to think, that she can look upon his grave. So she toils through the long, long hours of the weary days, and feeds her soul through the watches of her ivakeul nights with memories of what has been Innkino- forward no lone-er to a humble naradise on earth, which she may beautifv and adorn as the abode of her happy family-hopeless as to any relief this side of the grave but trusting with her broken heart, mat since in her lile-time, her 'good things have been taken from-her, there is approaching an eternity, throughout the endless ages of which she shall be comforted. Westminster Wit. In a carriage case before the Queen's Bench Mr. Hawkins had frequently to advert to that description of vehicle called a Brougham,' which he pronounced in proper dissyllabic form. Lord Campbell suggested that the word was as frequently contracted to 'broom,' which was just as well known, and the use of which would save a svlnhlp Henceforward Mr. Hawkins called it broom.' Presently the argument turned upon oinnibusses, and Lord Camnbell fre quently used the word 'omnibus,' to which he gave its due lentrth. 'I hetr vmir lord ship's pardon,' retorted Mr. Hawkins, 'but n your lordship will call it 'bus,' you will save two syllables, and make it much more intelligible to the witness ' Th lornrl lord assented to tho proposed abbreviation.
