The lion of northern Africa is but too roady to attack ;. hungry or not, the sight of an enemy rouses his fury at OLce ; and as lor cowardice, Gerard's narrative leaves no room for such a suspicion. Indeed the lion, so far from running away from the hunter, attacks a whole tribe of armed Arabs, nnd often scatter them to Ihe winds. No Arab thinks of attacking the lion unless supported by at least twenty muskets; and even then, if tlie lion is killed, il is not until he has committed serious duma'ro in tlieir ranks, tor a loiifT while they sufler him to devastate their tlouars, and carry oil' their cattle in helpless resignation. It is not until tlieir losses have driven them to desperation, that they resolve on attacking him in Im ltiir, and then they always choose the day time, llaviiur ascertained his lair, and havine; decided in full conclave that the attack is to be made, they assemble at the loot ol the mountain, and in croups of thirty or forty march towards the lair, shouting al the lop of their lungs. On hearing the noise, the lion if young tt once quits his lair ; the lioness does the same unless she have her infants with her. But, ns he doe not fly, he is suon in sight, and a discharge of musketry brings him down upon them like a thun derbolt. If the lion is adult he knows the meaning of ihis noise which wakes him, and he rises slowly, yawning and stretch ing lus limbs, rubbing his sides against tho trees, and shaking back his majestic mane. Me listens, and the approaching cries cause him to sharpen his claws, with certain premonitory growls. He then stalks slowly towards the first ledge of rock which command the country, and espying his enemies from this height, he crouches and awaits. The A rab who first sees him, cries, 'There he is !' and death like stillness succeeds. They pause to contemplate him, and lo look well to their arms, while the lion slowly licks his paws ana mane, thus making his toilette tie combut. Alter a long pause, an Arab advances in front of the. group, and in a tone of defiance shouts, 'Thou knowest us not, then, that thou thus liest before us ? Rise and fly, for we belong lo such a tribe, and I am Abdallah!' The lion, who has before this eaten more than one warrior who apostrophized him in precisely the same terms, continues passing his enormous paws over his face to beautify himself, and makes no reply to the chal lenge, nor to the second challenge, nor to the epithets of 'Jew ! 'Christian ! 'infidel !' liberally bestowed on him, until the voices swell in a chorus, which makes him impatient. He then rises, lashes his sides with his tail, and marches straight towards the insullers. The timid are al ready in flight ; and ihe bravo remain and wait his attack niuslcet8 ready, hearts beating. He ii beyond their reach, and walks leisurely towards thein. They now begin to retreat slowly, in order, their laces turned to him, until they reioin the horsemen at the foot of the mountain, who immediately commence galloping about, brandishing their muskets and yatagans, and shouting defiance. 1 he lion, on see ing the horsemen on the plain, pauses to reconnoitre. No crips or insults move him. Nothing but powder and ball will do that. It is heard at last, and then he changes his leisure march, which scatters the little army. No one is ashamed of flying now ; each tries to securo a favorable position from which to fire at ihe lion as he passes. The horsemen then ad vance. If, as is usual, the lion has clutched one of the retreating iroop, it is only necessary for a horseman to approach within reasonable distance and discharge :us gun, the lion ut once quits his victim to charge his assailant. After a while, the lion, wounded and tired, crouches like a cat and awaits his end. This is a terri ble moment. He is fired at, and receives all their balls without moving ; but should a horse gallop near enough to b reached in two or three boundn, either the rider or the Iiorso is doomed, for ihe lion is upon him in an instant, and never quits his hold. It will astonish European hunters to hear that thirty balls, at a distance of twenty paces, are not always enough to kill the lion ; it is only when the heart or brain is touched that death is certain ; and the nearer he is put to death the more dan gerous he is. During tho fight, but be fore lie is wounded, il he clutches a man, ho is satisfied wilh knocking him down j and llie man, probably protected by his burnous, gets or! with a mere neeh wound from the terrible talons. But afier the li on has been wounded, lie tears his victim, mangles him in his jaws, until he sees other men upon whom to spring ; nnd when mortally wounded his rage is something awful. He crushes the victim un der him, and crouches over him, as if re joicing in his agony. VVhilo his talons slowly tear the flesh ou the unhappy wretch, his naming eyes hxed on trie eyes of his victim, who fascinated by them ii unable to cry for help, or even to groan. From time to time the lion passes his large rough tongue over the face of his enemy, curls lus lip, aim snows an ms teeth. Meanwhile ihe relatives of the unhappy man appeal lo the moat courageous of the iroop, anil they advance, guns cocked, towards the lion, who sees them coming but never moves. 1- earing lest the halls should miss the lion and hit the man, they are forced lo approach so close, that ihey can place the musket in the enr of the lion. This is a critical mo ment. If the lion 1ms any force left hint, he kills the innu lying beneath him, and bounds on the one who has come to the rescue; and as h lies motionless on the body of his victim, it is impossible to know whether he will bound or not. In case his strength is loo much wasted, the lion crushes the head of the man beneath him the moment he sees ihe musket ap NUMBER 201. proach his car, nnd then closing his ayes jawails death. Monuments of Nixkveu. In a private note to tlie editors, Mr. Wood, American consul for Syria, informs us that fifty boxes of the monuments of disinterred Nineveh, procured for diflereni New Endand colleges, reached Beirut in October, and only four days after the departure of the last 13aslon vessel for tho season. They could be forwarded by steamer to Smyrna, but at considerable expense, beside tbe danger of injury by ths removal of them from the steamer to tne custom House at Smyrna, and then again to tha vessel, by men perhaps reckless, or ignorant of the value ot the contents of the boxes. It is thought bast, therefore, to detain them here till a Boston vessel arrives in the Spring. The boxes are from three to four feet square, and about six inches thick, strongly nailed and covered with, matting. Mr. Wood saw them safely de posited in the custom house, and will care fully watch over them till they are on their way to the new world, ihey will be ot great interest not only to the faculties and students of the colleges, but to the public generally. 1 he boxes were brought from Mosul to Skundeioon on iha backs of camels ; but there being no American nor American agent there, they remained in that piace for weeks, if not months, before they wera forwarded to Beirut. Mr. Wood also informs us that a very large and valualle collection, almost enough for a cargo, of the monuments of the same city, were put upon rafts by a learned and enterprising French gentleman, the last Summer, the rafts being supported by skin-bladders, as is the com mon practice when the water ot ihe li- gns is low, on which it was designed to float them down to the mouth of the river. where a French vessel waited to receive them. But the savage Bedouins, when the French gentleman had left his pre cious charge, thinking all was safe, and intending to return to France overland, waded into the river, and cutting the blad ders in the mere love ot baseness and mischief, sank the whole to the bottom. Perhaps they may be recovered when the water is low, but of this there is not much probability, Bos. Traveller, March 11. One or the Speeches."-Job K olik was one ol 'cm on the stump. A doubled barreled throat and, lungs as large as two bushel baskets, enabled him to elec;rify his constituents up. to a fighting point in less time than it would take for a Susque hanna rait to go over iNiagara k alls. His great speech delivered in Bob Stubb's ten acre lot, was a crusher. For the sake of posterity we give an extract: 'Fellow Citizens i You might just as well try to dry up the Atlantic ocean with a broom straw, or draw this 'ere stump from under my feet with a harnessed gadfly, as to convince mo that I ain't gwine to be elect ed this Leaf. My opponent don't stand a chance ; not a sniff. Why he ain't as intellectual as a common sized shad. Boys, I go in for the American eagle claws, stars, stripes and all ; and may I burst my everlastin' button holes, el 1 don't knock down, drag out and gouge- everybody as denies me,' Pat's Idea or a Cheap Newspaper. A gentleman visiting his estates in Ireland, was standing in a field noticing work that was being done, when he ovorheard Phe-lim telling Pat of some terrible intelligence from the seat of war. The news seemed so astounding that Pat couldn't quite make up his mind to swallow the whole of this without some further authority ; so he inquires : 'An' faith, where did ye get hold of the intelligence V 'Och ! and didn't I rade iv'ry blossed word in the chape newspaper thut's pren-ted in the neighboring town.' An d'ye belave what ye sea in the chape prents ?' inquired Pat. An' why shouldn't ye belave that as well as any other? It's a gintleman as prents it. 'Because, by faith, I don't think they can afford to speak ihe truth for the mon- ey"' Paris Fuel Shops. The fuel required to cook a dinner in Paris costs nearly as much as the dinner itself. Fuel is very scarce, and the American is surprised to find shops all over the city, fitted up with shelves like those in shoe stores, upon which is stored wood, split up in pieces about the size of a man's fn-ger, and done up in bundles, aa matches were in the days of the tirder box, steel and flint ; thev are about the Bbe of a bunch of as paragus. These little bundles sell at from two to six sous. Larger sticks are bundled up in the same way, and sell at a frightful price. Charcoal is sold by the weight, and hard coal being nearly as ex pensive as wood, can be bought in the smallest quantity at any of these futil shops.
