KVVINO, Warden. NUMBER 72. Sailn io State journal. Uonauce f Raggery. Tbe New York Bet aid of Saturday Ut gWel the following interesting account of Huntington, tbe great forger. It exhibits a eerie, of singular operations wbicb, though beginning and ending in rusvalily, are oot without that peculiar ro mance so often linked with roguerj: Since tbe immense frauds perpetrated br Charles B. Huntington on brokers in Wall street nave come to light, there is no small share of cunoaity in the pnulio mind to learn bow it is mat ne cuum have been so successful in bis rouiieries in that place oi sharoera. The frauds committed by Schuyler a oouple of years ago, tuuipieneuueu. ne was me preel-ident ol a railroad company, and intrusted with tbe issue of its stock; and the simDlest mind could understand how, witb implicit confidence reposed in him, he could over-issue Block to almost any amount. But in tbe case of Hun tington whose name has been for tbe last two weeks before tbe public it is difficult to comprehend how he, who was uukoown in financial circles a year or two ago, oould bave succeeded in Tiotimizing the Bote-sbareri of Wall street to the amount of some half a million of dollars. Tbe mode by which he did so we will try to explain. lhe liret trace that we can find of Mr. Huntington's connection with financial matters dates back only so far as 1852, when be and two or inree otner lDaiviouals fell into the hands of the police of this city for the (hare which they bad in petting up a fraudulent khinulapter con cern under tbe title of the "Anacostia Bonk of Washington, D.C." Indictments were found ugtiiuFt bim and bis accomplices on that occasion, but they were never brought to trial, oo account as arnears from an indorsement on the bill of some informalilv or incnmnltita. mss in the proof. We next lind bim. shortly thereafter, having a little box ol an office in Wall street, where he uurponea to cany on the business ot a bill broker in a small retail stvle. 1 bis business consists in acting as a Bort of acent or oo- between for brokers on a larger scale that iB, he would go to a broker, and find out what he would tell certain notes tor, and then, if be lound he could realize any profit by the tran-sacliou, he would buy from one and Fell to another. At this time be boarded up town with bis wife, on a modem scale. He agreed to pay $15 a week for their board, but even tbis moderate sum be did not, it is said, find it convenient to pay. He left that boarding-bouse, and went to the Metropolitan Hotel, where he staved lor some time; but be did not here indulge in any of tbe extravagances into which be afterwards launched. He subsequently went to the New York Hotel, where it seems he oommenced to be more liberal in his expenditures. We afterwards find bim occupying part of a house in Fif- teenm Bireet, ana recently owning two or three houses in Twenty-second street. Nothing iajnoie strange, in connection with Huntington's career, than the fact that hs was bo little known in Wall street or commercial circles. Our reporter conversed to-day with some of the principal brokers on the street ; few of them had dealings with him, and most of them bad never beard of him nntil tbe time of bis arrest. And yet he could raise half a million of dollars ttmong tbat fraternity on forged notes, wherein the signatures did not even pretend to be imitations. - ' . i Tbe supposition is that it Ib only within the last eighteen months that Huntington commenced to operate on forged paper. It may not be even so long. He bad now an ai x Wall street, and professed to carry on the legitimate business of a note broker. As most of our readers are in blissful ignoranoe of tbe business of note shaving, we will briefly descr.be it. Commercial firms, even though tbey may bave large capitul, are constantly compelled to pay by notes on time instead of cash. Tbe accommodation giveu by banks Is limited; and wueu mey ueonue to maae more aavanoes on the notes ot a tlrm, bill brokers are resorted to. These charge more or less discount on the bills, depending upon tbe credit of tbe drawer, and tne length ot time they may bave to rnn before tbey mature. The bills on houses in first rate standing, (technically known as gilt-edged paper) will be discounted at tbe rate of ten per cent, per annum, while on others, not so well known or trusted, the brokers charge a discount of two or three per cent, a month. It follows, therefore, that in times of ordinary commercial prosperity, when bankruptcies are rare, these shavers make quite a handsome profit by their operations. Huntington was engaged in this capital business. Tbe profits of the trade, large as tby must have been, did not eatisly bim. or were insufficient to enable bim to gratify his extravagant taste for fine bouses, costly furniture, splendid equipages, fast horses, and dashing women; bo be resolved to try bin band on that branch of ihe profession wbicb bus conducted bim to a oell in the Toombs. He went to work systematically, and used at first a good deal ol caution to evade detection. He was in the habit of going to tbe office of a broker in high standing and purchasing of bim notes of firms, sometimes to the amount of $60,000 or $80,000 in a week. For these be always paid in certified checks. "He was an easy, dashing-looking follow," said the broker ; "bad always a segar iu bis moutb, and was perfectly cool and nonchalant in his manner, so that be might very well ionpose on one; but there was something about him tbat I could not understand. I could not comprehend why be should come and buy our notes, as we did not divide tbe discount with bim, and be could make nothing by them." He afterwards let out the secret of it. Huntington would buy these notes, duplicate them, sell the notes again, aud use the duplicates as collateral security in raising money. At first, however, be used only lhe genuine notes, and as tbey were always found to be correct, be gradually gained tbe confidence ot those witb whom be had dealings. Wbeube had thus completely disarmed men of all suspicion, he begun to use tbe duplicate or forged notes. His plan was this he would go into a note broker's, say be wanted to borrow $40,000 for a month or so, for which be would give bis own note of hand and certain other bills of such and such dates and amounts as collateral security, aod be would leave a memorandum of these bills. If tbe broker wanted to satisfy himself tbat all was right, he would send to tbe firms purporting to be the drawers, and inquire whether tbey bad out the notes described. Tbey would refer to their books, find that they bad Issued such notes, and consequently ibe broker, not doubting that those offered by Huntington were the real ones, would advance tbe money asked upon, them. With the money thus raised Huntington' would make speculations, or would take up other bills becoming due, or would use it for bis private purposes. And thus he went on Irom week to week and from month to month. Escaping so often undetected, he began to relax in his exercise of caution. Instead of baying up genuine notes and duplicating them, be would sometimes go into a broker's, ask to look at bis paper, run bis eye over tbe amounts, dates, and names of drawers, and would undertake from memory alone, to duplicate such as be thought best fitted for bis purpose. In this, bowover, he sometimes made a slip, for we find that Mr. Kane, a broker, with whom he had extensive dealinus. detected bim on two or thren occasions iu ottering notes which ba discovered to be forgeries, wny mis gentleman did not then hand over tbe culprit into tbe hands of the law, is a question which be will have some difficulty lu answering to the satisfaction of the public. Another broker, holding a note which he suspected to be a foriterv. went tn thn firm nirporting to issue it. and. although it was bnt a clumsy imitation of the genuine note, the party, without looking at it, and by merely referring to tbe bill book, declared it to ba all right. Is it any wonder tbat with such a loose way of doing business, frauds would be perpe-

In one of the Sep. tember numbers of my paper I related my experience of the good effects of the Bittera, since which time they have bad a Urge aale, and have now become the Standard medicine in this vicinity. Is it any wonder tbat with such a loose way of doing business, frauds would be perpe- |
