Stockeod. a sinewy, (tout, active young Scotchman, associated iu farruiiip- with Mr. Liinklater, Tenalquot riaius, WaHUiiigton Territory, recently killed quite a large panther, air feet seven inches in luiieht, in a fair fist and boot fight the circumstances attending wmcu are related as follows: It seems that at the further end of a large field, about a quarter of a mile from the house, Mr. 8tockend discoverd quite a movement and disturbance among a lot of hogs that were kept in the field. He at once nroceedtd in the direction to ascertain the cause, when, to his surprise, at a short distance from the hoes, he discovered that a favoriUi young dog was en gaged in a conflict with a punthcr. Determined to save the dog, ut all hazards, he resolved to Interpose in the fight, ezpectiog to frighten the panther up a tree that stood bard by. when be could return to the house for his rifle and bring it down. He accordingly gave the animal a substantial kick, when it ceased its en gagement with tbe dog, straightened itself erect on its hind legs, and pitched into him. in me meantime tbe young dog made a nasty retreat for some distauce. The contest now seemed to bo a desperate and very unequal one, but there was no escape irom it tor our friend atockend. i ne panther made a furious dash at him, but retaining his full presence of mind, he met it with a furious kick. The fight now assumed the character of a "rough and tumble," and a volley of well directed blows and kicks disabled the animal somewhat. He called his dog back, and the faithful young auimal, as if ashamed of having deserted its master in the hour of peril, and as it to make amends for its ungrateful conduct, entered into the conflict with unequaled fierce- nss. Mr. atockend nnally succeeded in get ting one foot firmly planted upon the neck of ms assailant, and keeping tne other in rapid motion iu the direction of the animal's head, soon brought the contest to a close. He hus no doubt but that tbe long heavy boots which be had on were the means of saving his life. The fight lasted, first to last, about fifteen minutes, in tbe course of which Mr. Siockend was somewhat severely bandied. Uis shoulder was badly scratched he received a severe wound from the teeth of tbe animal in the thigh and was badly scratched in several places, altnougb by no means dangerously, or by which he will hereafter be disabled' Can any one of. our cotemporaries beat the panther fight of our friend Stbckend? Pioneer, tOlympia, W. T.) Mauh 27. Interesting to Topees. The recent death of a young man in Brampton, Canada, from tasting of the "essence ol brandy, "with which be was manufacturing cognac, and the revela tion of the fact that strychnine is largely uad in tbe manufacture ol wniBky, nas awakened some attention to the nature of the drinks which are sold for pure spirits. Brandy, sin wino. and whisky are so adulterated that com paratively little pure liquors can be purchased. Most ot tho brandies are a mixture of diaboli cal ingredients, caustio enough to burn oak chips, to say nothing of the delicate tissues ot the buman system, tne Bpringneld Ke- publican says: "No secret is made of this business. The drug dealers of New York advertise openly 1 . l-L.l -. tne compounds oy means oi wnicn tne vne imitations of spirituous liquors are made. A circular fretn one of these drug houses, in forms tho world that brandy number one the best sort, we take it Is made of "oil of brandy," a poisonous ether, oil of bitter almonds, (as poisonous as prussic acid,) etherial wine, alcohol, sugar aud Malaga wine. No. 2 oil of brandy, acetic ether, tama rinds, cherry juice, sugar all colored with burnt sugar. No. 3 oil of brandy, etherial oil, bitter almonds, elder flowers, and tannin. No. 4 oil of brandy, acetic ether, oil of peach and alcohol. (Jin oil angelica, oil of juniper, rum, essence ot lemon, sate, syrups, and water; if smokiness is required, add a Lew drops of creosote and to make it biting upon the fialate, add some caustic potash. The circu-ar advises manufacturers to use "with discre tion." tamarinds, French plums, cherry juice, brown sherry, oak shavings, tincture of catechu' powdered charcoal, DiacK tea, ground rice, and other ordinary materials, well known to distillers and recuhers. we should advise drinkers to use these villainous mixtures with discretion and throw them into ths gutter."The adulteration of liquors is carried on as largely abroad as in this country, and the Ciiatntn-houaa brand is no puarantv of curitv Thousands of pipes of raw spirits are annually exported trom this country, to bs returned in tne snape oi ine, oranay, ojc, wnicn contain not a tune oi grape juioe. 9-1 heard an anecdote the other day; let me clone with it, to show how profound is her sense of dependence on the tbrilt and industry of the North for the very comforts or life. That most eloauent of all Southerners, as I think, Mr. Pren Use of Mississippi, was addressing a crowd of some 4,000 people, defending the tariff, and, in tbe course of an eloquent period which rose gradually to some beautilul climax, he painted the thrift, the energy, the comfort, the wealth, the civilization ot tne Morln, in glowing colors, when there rose up on tbe vision ot tne assem bly, In the open air, a horseman ol magnificent proportions; ana, just at tne moment oi nutnea attention, when the voice of Prentiss had ceased, and tbe applause was about to break forih, the horseman exclaimed, " D n the North " The curse was so much in unison with the habitual feeling of a Mississippi audience, that it quench ed tbeir enthusiasm, and nothing but respect for tbe speaker kept tbe crowd from applaud ing the horseman, rrentips turned ms lame loot around, and said, " Major Moody, will you rein in that steed a moment?" He assented. Said he, " Major, the horse on which you sit, came from Upper Missouri; the saddle that surmounts him came from Trenton, N. J.; tbe hat on your head was made in Danbury, Conn the boots you wear came from Lynn, Mass.; the linen of your Blurt is irisn, ana coston maae it up; your broadciotn coat is oi juowen manufacture, and was cut in New York; and if to day you surrender what you owe the ' d d North,' you would sit stark naked." Laughter Bnd long applaase. Wendell Phillips. A Mower's Imiiokucb. Wendell Phillips, in a recent lecture in the East told the following touchinir storv: It is the story of a mother, on the green hills or Vermont, noiaing oy me rigns nana a son, sixteen years old, mad with love ot the sea. And. br aha stood bv the garden gale on a sunny morning, she said: "Edward, they toll me for I never saw the ocean that the great temptation of the seaman s life is drink. Promise me, before you quit your mother's hand, that you will never drink." And, said he (for he told me the story,) I gave her the promise, and I went the troad globe over Calcutta, the Mediterranean, San Francisco, t.h Hane of Good Hope, the North Pole and the South I saw them all in forty years, and I never saw aglass filled with sparkling liquor that my mother's form by the garden gate on the green hillside of Vermont, did not rise before me; and to day, at sixty, my lips are innocent of the taste oi liquor. Monkey Thbatiuoaxs. We learn from a Paris letter in the New York Evening Poll that a Monsieur Hodson has just established in 1'aris a theatre of learned monkeys, but so far the representations of his apish troop have not realized his expectations. It seems that M. Hodson "has deeply studied the character of monkeys, aud Is ol opinion that they are a racewuica an (imimcui uui Keeps in reserve for the time when humanity shall have fallen into toe decay towards which it is now tendingl" Tho incorporation of the monkey race idto the human family, he thinks, will be accomplished in about five huud red years, With this conviction, M. ilodson Drought his pets to Paris, in order, we suppose, to foreshadow ihts future character uf the dranial Whether he expects that the absorption of the genus monkey iulo the genus homo will begin ni r arm we ttie uui, lutormeu, oui tils aeuut with the interesting creatures at the French metropolis must be regarded as a satire on the frivolity of the Parisians. &&.A student at une of our Slate Colleges bad a barrel of ale deposited in his room, contrary to usage. He received a summons to ap pear before tbe President, who said: "Sir, I am informed that you have a barrel ol ale lu your room." " Yes, tir." " Well, what explanation cauyou make?" "Why, tbe met is, sir, my linyaicinn advises me to try a little each day as a tonic, aud not wisi.ing to stop at the various places where tbe beverage is retailed. 1 con cluded to have a barrel taken to my room." "Indued, aud have you derived any lieueflt Iri.in the use of it V " Ah, yes, sir. When the barrel was first taken to my room, two days mnce, I could scarcely lilt it. Now I can carry it with the greatest ease." We believe the witty student was discharged without special reprimand. Rochester Union. Mankind jcot sj bad afiei All. It is a curious thing that the mau, in all England, whose duty it la to know most about crime, (May hew) has tieeu beard to say, that he finds more and more to excuse iu men, aud thinks better of human nature, even alter traekiue it through its most perverse and iutolerable courses. It ia the man who has seen nothing of life who is intolerant of his lellow -men. Misanthropical people have in most cases been made misanthropes by hoping too muoh. But go on, thiukiug the best you can of mankind, working the most you can for them, never scolding them because they will not be wise iu your way; aud, even then, being sure that, think as gently and as lovingly as you cau,you have dealt but a scant measure of tolerance to your lellow men. Stockeod. a sinewy, (tout, active young Scotchman, associated iu farruiiip- with Mr.
