Their burses were reeking aud panting, for they had aeon tie at a distance, and supposing Irom Hie apee l at which we traveled, that we were endeavoring to elude them, bad determined that we should uotecape. "The faot is," said one ol them. "we d-in't permit any man to pass through here during these times unless, we kro his name and business." They recognir-d Mr. Hair-grove, and accompanied db ou Ihe remainder of the trip. The booses from wbiob thu several orisnnera wre taken were pointed to us. We then visited the ravine where they were shot. It la a very secluded spot the gracs is nearly ull kill- eu io tue viuiuny oi ine Inul munlem. Mr. Hairgrove, and one or two ol the other nrinon- ers who were preent dosiguatcd the exact lo cation of the two partes. Hamilton and bin band were ou the tide of the ravine much higher than tbe pi leouern their horses' feet iw-iug nearly on a level with tbe prisoners' beads, tnougn oniy a tew yards irom lOt-m. As there were between twenty-five aud thirty of the murrierers, and only eleven of the urisonnrs. it is almost miraculous that any escaped instant death. The details of tbs revolting affair, given on toe spi t by one ot the intended victim", were enough to chill aay man's blood. At thty contained nothing new of material importance I shall not give them, for the readers ot 7 Journal here alreddy "supped full of horror," in connection who me siaugnter. The conduct of Mr. Snyder Coot Snvder. one of tbe prisoners, but bin neighb.tr, the Snyder who was not captured) was very gallant. Bo-lore the murders were committed, Uamilton, with six mounted men, reached the black. mith's shop in which Snyder was working. He did not see mem, unui, in response to a call from without, be stepped out of dmirs and found them all within two rods of him Hamilton greeted him with: "Now, by, sir, you are roy prisoner at last " "Not yet," replied Snvder. mirineinir back into bis shop, and seizing his shot gun. At Ihe same time he directed bis son (a young man of 17) to run to the bouse forbia guu. The bou.e it eeveral rods from tbe shop, up a high bank, ana in wooie aieiance was expoeed to tbe fire of Hamilton's men, several ot whom were Hrm- ed with rifles. The boy replied: wny, lamer tneyu shoot me if I Btart." "Go on, I'll proteot you," was the answer. Tbe young man star ed at a brii-k run, and bis lather again stepped out of the shop with his gun presented. Hamilton ordered the boy to halt, hat be still ran on. "Stop," shouted Hamilton, "or we'll shoot you down la your tracks." "Go on," said Snyder. "111 kill the first man whn takes aim at you." The murderers evidently "saw shoot" in Snyder's eye. At all events, no one of th m attempted to raise bis gun to bis shoulder till the boy was out of range. But just as be reached the bouse, Hamilton suddenly fired at Snyder. He had no time to take aim, and overabot. Snyder instantly returned tbe fire, but Hatiil-too had dropped behind his horse. The horse was killed. Snyder retreated into the tbnp, re londod, came out out, fired again, woun ling one of Hamilton's party, which had now fallen baok a little. He then ran for tbe house. As bo was' jumping over a stone wall, eeveral shots were fired aiur him, and one wounded blm in tho hip. He dropped behind tbe wall, and re-loaded, wbile Hamilton's men, supposing him disabled, once more began to approach. He sud denly rose op, and again fired among them. , By this time the boy came out with big gun, and both father and son retreated to the timber a few rods distant, that they might have some protection from tbeir enemies. Hamilton and his six men did not see fit to follow them, but retired in great cxanpeiation, and when they reached the remainder of their party, swore that they would give the prisoners a little of what Snyder had given them! This occurrence Is the only foundation that existed for tbe atrocious falsehoods published in tbe St. Louis Republican, in regard tu a "fort," and bd engagement between Montgomery aud Hamilton's party. Snyder's shop, built of rough upright slabs, at an expenso perhaps of ten or fifteen dollars, Is the only "lurt," and Montgomery was more than fifteen miles from here at ihe time. After leaving Snyder's shop, we visited the now deserted farm ot C'apt. Hamilton, tho leader of tbe gang. Hamilton has not dared to live in tbe Territory since the murders. Two log houses, well fortified, and with portholes cut in tbe sides, stand together on bis claim. Mr Uoipetzer was bis nearest neighbor. Hamillou had often told him that he would take off his head, and tbose of tbe other free State men in tbe vicinity, but this was regarded as an idle threat. From Hamilton's bouse we returned lo the Trading Post,' where quite a crowd of people had colieoted. At 2 P. M. the Governor addressed them in tho usual strain. He signified his intention to withdraw all the troop irom Fort Scott, and oomtnisxion the officers and enroll tbe men as Territorial militia who are now guarding tbe frontiers. He promised to keep a guard at long as any apprehension of danger should exist. He alluded to the lato revolting murders, and pledged himself to do all in hit power to secure the criminals. He urged tbe enforcement of law and order upon all parties; stated that tbe District Court would hereafter sit in this county; and appointed reliable Free State men, rt commended by the meeliog, lo act as chairmen ot tbe township supervisors, in organieing tbe county, lie said this was not hit borne, and be had nothing to do with tbe politics ol Kansas. The people should vote as they choose; II they pleased themselves they would please blm. Uo appietiended no trouble at the election of tbe 2nd of August, becauc the MietouH election nceiured on the tame day. Alter toe uoveruor had coooiuded. Dr. Robinson and Judge Wright wt-re called for and spoke a few moments. Tbey tben started on their way, while the meeting uuHQimuusly called for Montgomety. Capu Montgomery accordingly took the staud. De expressed coutldence lu Gov. Drover, and satislanion at what he bad done. But he thought the Governor, having been hers lor so short a time, did not fully comprehend the position of tha Fret State men, or be would not have Intimated thitt any of their action had been gratuitoua and aggrestive. He then went into a history of the wbolo Kansas strug pie, including the Mlssnurl "Self-Defensive As sociation," or bme-lodgea; and claimed that nis own nciton hart open just and necessary, to prevent nimell sud Ihe other f ree Mate men of the country from being driven from their homes. "I bavo accepted," he said In nonclu-lun, "the olive branch tendered by the Governor. 1 regard bis vijiI and oolion us a d' duration ot pm(e. No critin barm euued, and it wan decidedly amini:;g when seen from the shore I Spent the night at tbe "Tradine Poa." and this morning went with Mr. Hairnrove and Mr. Babb, to the scene of the murdeis. Not more than one third olthe houses in tlmt vicinity ceem to be occupied, the people having left through fear. We were in some haste, und therefore drove rapidly; but just beiin we reached Ihn ppot two parlies ol -cnuto, lour or five In each came riding up behind from different directions, aud overtook u.
