We immediately gave ohaso and in a fow hours bad safely bagged all three, 'i'hoy were all loaded with cotton, bound for Havana. We Tory kindly took oharge of thoir cotton and sent it North for the mudsills to operate upon. The next day we made tho aoquaintanco of another "seeesh," bound from Havana to Matamo- ras, but as Matamoras is not situated in this region we oonoluded that we would rather she should go North. . She had a general oargo, among which was a largo quantity of rifle powder and lead'-artiolea -vory muoh needed by our Southern brothren just now. On the night of April 21, another ootton-loaded schooner insisted en getting lu our way, and as a oouple hundred bales of ootton is to be con sidered quite aeoeptablein those timos, we sent her along to Key West. ,0n lii2Uth April as we wore oruising just to the eastward of the Bar, we quietly dropped alongside of another ootton.loaded oraft, whioh we sent to Ship? Island, from whence her oilton was shipped to Now York by the Baltic. On the morning of the 20th June, as we were cruising near the Bar, we discovered just at daybreak, a sohooner to the eastward, oloae in to the land. Feeling satisfied from her movements thstjsbe was trying to run tho blokgde, we gave chase. As soon as she saw na she headed for the boaoh, and in a few minutes was high and dry ashore. As we approached we oould see the orew busily engaged in transferring her eargo to the beaob; but as wo were soon within shelling distance'; they did not suocced in saving much, 'and a few moments after they quit bor we saw smoke and tlame issuing from her oabin hatch. We ran in within a half mile of her) and sont our first cutter, with an armed orew, in oharge of Acting Master Dunn, to board her. They pulled in rapidly, and in a row moments were nearly alongside, when the rebels opened a brisk fire of musketry upon them from the bushes whioh lined the shors about sixty yards distant. Nothing daunted, however, our brave boys jumped on board and began an investigation, replying to tbe rebel fire with an occasional shot from their rifles. Mr. Dunn jumped down into the hold to see If there was any ohanse lo extinguish the fire, but found the whole after 'hold and oabln in flamest Returning on deck they threw into lire boat some fruit thatKSS lying around loose and shoved off, part of the orew keeping Up a brisk fire on the rebels meantime. ' As soon as the boat had got off from the beach so as to be out of the line of Are fforn tho ship, tbe Kanawha sent a few rifle shells among the bushss, whioh effectually soattered the rebels. We laid by for an hour' Or two, until the sohooner was totally destroyed, sad thkn returned to eur anchorage; . The Coxswain of ths cutter, When the rebels wire firing upon them after they had boarded the sohooner, actually" begged Mr. Dunn to let him rush ashore' and charge them with the bayonet, which he thought would effectually disperse them; But as from the fire there mttst-hate been some thirty Or forty Men in the woods, that officer did not think it quite the thing to land With six men tb cross an open beach of twenty yards and oharge bayo-nets upon an unseen enemy.' " ''..'' ' I must now tell you of a oaptdre whioh we have Just made, Wnlohhas given us more pleasure thaa all the' others combined. "-' On the morning ef the1 29th of June, Just at daylight, we saw a scfiooner about ten miles off to tho southward. ' At sohooners, when sedn in the vicinity of blookaded ports, are always to bo considered as' suspicions oraft, we immediately cave ohase. At 7 o'olsok ' we oame up "with her and found her to be an honest trader bound to New Orleans. We inquired whother she had soen any other Vessels. - She had seen a sohooner at daylight, a few miles from them, ' standing to the southward. We orowded all 'sail and steam, and ran off until 10 o'clock, but not seoing anything we turned around ana headed for our usual anohorage off the Bar. About 11 o'olook we saw a ship ooming down toward us from the direction of Mobile, which we soon made out to be the Preble,sloop-of-war, one of the blookadlng fleet.' As soon as she got within signal distance, up went her Hag. "An English steamer rau ashore last night on the Bar, in trying to run the block-adit," was tho story they told, and as soon as this beoamo known In the ship all was exoite-mont. , The only othor ship on the blockade besides our own and thl Preblo,' is tho steam sloop Buequehanna. ' All steam was crowded on, and the Kanawha jumped along like a race horso. At i P. M. we got np alongside the Susquehannab, which laid off the bar, about five miles from the fort, and there, sure enough, about 600 yards from the fort, lay a large stoara propcllor, with a rivor slnamer along side ol her, taxing out cargo, xne in shore ahannel. Bear tho fort, only has about seven foot of water, and the steamer drawing ten feet, (as we attorwards ascertained; oouia not be Bot over without lightening, it was very evident that the rebels oonsidored that they nau tnis vesssi ana nor oargo saioiy naaer cover, as the Busquobanneh bad been quietly looking on all day, and tho other vessels were out of sight ; but they had reckoned without the nanawna. AS soon as our oantain oaa aommuniaated with the Susnuehannab. we headed right In for the fort,' the Husqtiehannah Betting unuorwoigh. and following us."' . When the robels saw us ooming, they mndo all haste to got on shore, leaving the tcbsoI, as it afterwards proved, In suoh a hurry that they did not even drop an anchor to hold her tn oase' of a rise In the tide. Wo ran in within a oouple of miles and stopped to reconnolter. It scorned that the vessel oould only be taken by the boats and she was so close to the forts, It looked like a desperate undertaking. Just at this time the how of the steamer swung round, the tide hav. ins raised sufficiently to float her. and she be. gan to drift slowly along the land. AS you may supposo, we watohed her with Intense interest. AtArot w, supposed that her orew were on NUMBER 22. board, and that they were only trying to get in eloser to ths fort, but as she gradually drifted lurtner on, we Deoame assured tnai sae was abandoned. . The rebels now discovered what a blunder they had committed, aad endeavored to remeuy it. inree Boats, crowded witn nun, put off from the fort, and pulled for the steamer, but they were loo late. A shotl from the Bus- quehannah dropped noar them, aad they put for tne oeacn in a nurry. - xne steamer aad bow drifted down the beaoh about three-fourths of a mile from tbe fort, and touohed on the beaoh. She fort cpsnsd fire npon ns, but as ws were bent upon having the steamer, we oonoluded not to return just men. tweing a reuel gunboat running down the beach on the inside of ths land spit Chat divides ths waters of the Hay from tke Gulf, we watohed them and saw thsm haul their boats over the sand bank and launohthem right abreast ths stranded steamer. In a few moments they bad got on board. It was now evident that if we were lo oapture her, prompt measures must be taken. The Kanawha was headed direotly twards her, and whsn within half a mile, an eleven-inok shell was sent whining between her masts. This was more than the rebels bargained for, and they made all haste to "evacuate." They skedaddled in a hurry, and we ran in until within a hundred yards of her, and dispatohed a oouple of boats in ehargo of Aoting Master Partridge and Acting - Midshipman Batoheller, who wero soon.- on board ' of her, and tha prfse a ours. But now the question was to get her off. The rebels had dropped her an ohor before quitting her the last time, and had ateo opened some vaives in tne engine-room, through which th. watsr was running at a fearful rale. To add to this, Ihs fort, only a mils distant, and the rebel gunboat were both firing at ns. nut an eieven-inon shell from our "Unole Abraham" soen disposed of this latter annoy ance, inoottioer who had boarded her sont baok a boat with ths information that the water was deep enough for us to corns slonxslde. bo we steamed up to her, and in a few moments had her fast to us with a six-inch hawser, and slipping her ohain we soon had her safely an- ouoreu out of roach or the guns or ths forL She proved to be an iron steamer, of about 000 tons, called the Ann, of London. And subsequent investigation revealed the faot that her oargo was prlnoipally arms and ammunition, with a fow hundred, bags of coffee,, and sundries. They bad got out about one-third of her oargo, whioh perhaps will pay thorn for the loss of ths rest. Ukiteo States Gukooat Flotilla, Wednesday, July 10, 18G2. The monotony and ennui whioh has hung like a pall for the last two weeks over our fleet was most ell'ectually broken yesterday morning, and a rather unpleasant break it was. Hut to faole: About 3 GO a. m, the gunboats Carondolct and Tyler, and tbe ram Queen of the West got undor way, steamed np the river a short distance, turned and headed up the Ya-soo.Rumors had been rlfo for . several days that the Arkansas was preparing lo como out, but a large majority hooted it down, and eocfled at the bare idea. It seems, however, that those in authority placed some oredenoo in the report, and consequently tno two gunboats and ram wero sont to look up matters. Upon entering the river, the Qucon shot up ahead of tho reel, tbe Carondolct . following, while the Tyler brought up the rear. Ihey had proceeded about five miles only, whon those on the gunboats were startled by the appearanoe of the Queen ooming full speed down the river, with evidently every pound of steam she oould make at work on her shaft. She flew by the Carondolct with the words, 'Tfto Arkansas is ooming:" and shortly after, a long, low, mud-oolored oraft, with a short, thick, black smoke stack in her middle, puffing out huge volumes of black smoke, oame swiftly around the point, and made for the Carondolct. The river was too narrow to turn baok, even if Capl. Walker had so wished; but tho captain is one who knows no suoh word aa "baok out," and swinging around broadside, to avoid raking shots, the Carondelet belohed forth a whole broadside on to the rapidly advancing oraft. Imagine the consternation produoed when tbe ' balls were seen to strike and fall harmlessly in the wator. "At him again," was the ary, and another broadside was poured into the monster at fifty yards range, but with no more effect than if so many peas bad been discharged. The Arkansas now ran into tne carondolct s starboard quartor with a fearful orasb, pouring broadside after broadtlde into the gunboat, which, passing through the wooden casemate, raked the vessel from stem to stern. The Arkansas showed no intention of leaving her viotim, but remaining along her starboard quarter rakod her fore and art with pointed shot? Ths Carondelet s stern and after division of starboard battsries, kspt np an Incessant fire but the huge solid shot flew off like India rubber balls. .. . There was no tangible spot (o bs seen, a very small round hole; just large enough to admit the gun, oonttltated her ports, and on elevating or depressing, the porthole moved with the gun. Finding hit guns were doing no ssrvioe, Capt. Walker had his boarders oalled away, and into the rebel craft they poured ; but not a man or a passage way ooald be found. ; Tho boarders now returned and the guns set (o work, but it was so muoh powder wasted. .The carondelet s stern was now perfeotly riddled, all the officers' quarters shot away, and everything literally, torn to pieoes. ' ' ' '.''. At length tne shot cut away the steam-pipe, and scalding vapor sprsad to every part of the boat. Many of the nieu jumped overboard. At this junoture of affairs Captain Walker led a boarding parly on the rebel's dsok, but could find no potsible way of gotting below. The hatches were nil seoured undernoatn, ana tne smauost kind of an aperture or hole was nowhore to be found. This discovered, the party returned to give up thoir boat only when the bottom of the river oall for her. What mon were loft stood by what guns oould be brought to bear, and workod them until the Arkansas, thinking she had about finished her viotim, pushed along past ber and stood for the Tylor, which had Blood by the Carondolct through the whole tight. The Tylor discovered her motion, aud knowing her thin frame would stand no ohance when brought in oontaol with the enemy's invulnerable eides, headed down the siroam, keeping just cloar of t lis Arkansas, and firing her etern battery. Dunn to let him rush ashore' and charge them with the bayonet, which he thought would effectually disperse them; But as from the fire there mttst-hate been some thirty Or forty Men in the woods, that officer did not think it quite the thing to land With six men tb cross an open beach of twenty yards and oharge bayo-nets upon an unseen enemy.' ' At sohooners, when sedn in the vicinity of blookaded ports, are always to bo considered as' suspicions oraft, we immediately cave ohase. A. 0. . Trouble ati-and ciulf. . A correspondent of the Philadelphia Presa writes from Vioksburgb, under dato of July I): "Tbe steamer Tennessee left this morning, convoyed by the gunboat Katahdin. On her downward passage to New Orleans, on arriving within a short distanoe of the ever-troublesome Grand Gulf, information was rsooived that it was very strongly fortified by a large body of troops, under tbe oharge of Gon. Bragg. Not deeming hor ' strength sufficient to oonlend against suoh a superior foroo, sho put back to her old position, and now lies ahead of the Brooklyn. We are now virtually prisoners. hemmed in on all sides, and oan only be relieved from our unoomfortable situation by tbe arrival ot Ualleok's army. The river is falling very fast. It is hardly possible that the three larga sloops, Hartford, Brooklyn and Riohmond. to gether with the two sloops of smaller class, the Oneida and Irequois, whioh draw nearly the same quantity of water, oan be ablo to get down the river. In suoh a contingency, all wa oould do would bs to make ourselves as com fortable as possible till Spring, when the river rises. Should we be thus caught, the Navy Department will lose the services ef a number of the best ships in the United Stalos Navy, with a full orew of oflioers and men." Jeff.
