IAT THE PRESS SAYS OF IT, Frtm the Chicago Tribune, MURUAJf AND TUK MUHn. The other wiog of the Ohio Democracy- the wine which iiominaled Gen. Georso W. Morgm, of Cumberland Gap, for GoTernor 4 seem to be running a race with the wing wmon liominaieu Alexander 1onz, or toe Conferleriite States of America, for GoTern- Tlie Lonir party endorsed the Calhoun dogma of State Kighla, and proposed to ngut it out on mat line, oblmous of the fact that it hae alroady been fought out on ilut line aud shot through the head. Tho Morgan parly, not oonlent with a single enuuoiation ot the same dogma, assert and reasH;rt it in seven lumbering resolutions, in all of which It is affirmed that the States are somehow superior to the Federal Got-erument, and that tin "reserved rights of the states" whioh probably inolude tbt right to secede, (ai no' oritioism is passed upjn Iho reoent attempt to exercise that ngut Dy eleven Democratic States) must be preserved and vindicated at all haiards. Tho Virginia resolutions of 1798, whioh .t. Domed the calnounlsm of that tlav, ars ax. prcssly endorsed, and deolared to be the n1"" "i,,'h Deinocratio orecd In iw year lHiiS. Those resolutions, la brief, are tbitt the several States are the judges of acy alleged grievances sustained from the re terai uovernmont, and also of the meaj. uro of redress of such grievances. Ths only difference between the Morgan cartv and the Long party is, that the former take mnre words than the latter to express the same idea; and that they have nominated an inerlicient Federal General, instead of an efficient Confederate Congressman, for uovernor. It is fair, therefore, to regard the two tactions 01 the Ubio ifemocraoy as one and the same thing, or, to nse (he language of ineir eloquent uox, "nuns or the same aaiuige made out of (he same dog." They both proceed upon the idea that the war, whioh most people agree in oonsidering closed, has just begun, and that although the wager of lire-arms has been decided unfavorably to the doctrine of Stale Rights, the arena of chop logie and chioanery is slill open for its vindication that what was lost at Vioksburg and Chattanooga and Appomattox may yet bo secured in lbs halls of Congress or the Executive Mansion. With this view they declare that the "ae-called secedod Slates " are entitled lo the same poliiical rights as the States which prevented them from seceding to be represented in Congress, and to vote for Presi dent and Vice President, and to help put iinugs oacK on tuo old lotting ot tbe Uu-chauan Administration, when all Democrats united in the bolief that "you cannot coerce a Mtiito. Uen. Morgan seems to be a fit candidate for such a party, for a more despicable speecn than mat whioh he made to the Corf- vention we have never seen. He begins and ends with the negro, lio oommeuoes by. deploring the faot that negro troops arc slill retained in the sorvico. This fact, ho says "should excite to vigilanoe aud awake the anxioly of every citizen " lu his conclusion, he indulges in Ihis low blackguardism:"I have siiokeu of the gallant meu who went forth to sacrifice life and limb in defense of the Constitiiiion and the Union, &u not of lh nifffftr, nod whilo Ihoy were thus tattling in the liold there was another army at homo, uf civilian patriots, aud de-viiinl to tbo principles uf the old Hug, bat-mni? lor icu.u.Nu. m,..iy." Well, who is H is Geu. Morgan wlio affects to sneer at Iho "nigjrei'.'" tho .)ttKo. has been heard from in iho admnct. duriii-Uic war. Morgau has been heard from only in tbe rttreat. The "nigger" went forward u Fort Wagner and Mobile. Morgan went btti'kuurd at Cuuibeilauil Gap and Chickasaw JllulF. The "nigger," deprived of education aud thrust down by centuries of oppression and wrong, iuiproved his small opportunities by obeying his orders nnd killing rebels when he hnd a chance. Morgan, educated at tho nation's expeuss, and promoted over the "nigger' by the inllu-euce of some white politician, managed to get through tho war without killing any-thinff but iho horses and mules of his com-maud, whotio powers of locomotion he taxed so severely, in getting away from the enemy, that Congress doomed it worth an investigation lo seo how much his Cumberland Gap stoeplo chase had oost the Federal Treasury. And yet ho thinks himself qualified to sneer at the negro I We sup. pose vallaudlgham isro'erreu lo as a typo of 'the "oivilian patriots" who rcniniued at home balding for constitutional rights, instead of going to the field and sacrificing lir'oaud limb "iu defense of tho I'uiou, but not of the nigger." Morgans opinion or tho war in goueral is such as might be expeoted from a Copperhead ollioer who runs away from ihe enemy and then blackguards Ihe "niggor."- tle says: "ould it not bo woll to remember that civil wars are like family feuds, and when, after tho strife hss oeaseil, and the cause of ibo difiiotilly has been calmly considered, both parties are gonerally found to be more or less in fault." This is, the Soulh was somcwhnt at fault for rebelling, and the Korlh somewhat to blame for putting down the rebellion. Well, the loyal armies bad all been led by Mor gans, the North would not have been to blame for any offence of ;hat kind. (from the ludtanapolii Journal.) Xlie vbto Convollon. The Demoorats of Ohio hav met, rosolv- ed, nominated, spoken, and adjourned; and that is all it will amount lo. Vallandig-ham, (is temporary President, oalled the Convention to order, and laid down its oreed. The arch-traitor had it all its own way. Treason is again reiterated under the threadbare name of States Rights - Negro siiUragc. Is opposed. White men are patronised and encouraged. This plank is nvcrrtd to be ovor 4,000 years old. The people ought to be fraternal, since they novo quit ngnting. Tne soldiers are remembered, beoause they are brave and pat riotic: expenses must be reduoed; bonds taxed; free speech tolerated; habeas corpus eulogized; elections must be fair, the Couetitution is not lo be infraoted; tiher- man's treaty was better than Grant's; sorry it was not adopted; will, however, stand by Andy Juhtisou; he's all right. Such is the substance ot what democrats think about in Ohio. Not very muoh food for thought, after all. What is good in it, is more than 4,000 years old, and what is bad in it, Is at least as old as the beginning of the rebellion. What there is in It that I. onmn'.imentarv to tho soldiers, is hypo critical, and what there is in it that pro fesses to be patriotic is lalse. V allandig-ham and his ilk can now afford lo apptaud soldiers, and Invoke fraternal fooling. Thoy are anxious lo fraternize wnn their renoi friends. It osu now be dono Ihis side of ths border. Geu. Morgan is their candidate tor Uov eruor. His political elatus is wilh Valtin-'tiKham. He was his right bund man ill IliB oontist last year for Governor. The taut that, tho General was in the warouoyoar will not holp him. Ths Damooraoi lollowa suit, aud nomina'atas its champioi Qen. Morgan, slylinir hi 10 the "Hero if Cumberland Gtp.' We have always beet zealous advocates of the claims of the sol Jier, but if we remember aright, all the heroism displayed by Gen. Before t nuu tiuie im ...n. tt ti,,. iifnr f stances' (and of steam) whirled me away into these oooler Northern regions. In these high latitudes 1 am not in best mood lo write of Southern scenes; so I will givs you some acsount of things about me. The usual route to this place is by steamer from Cleveland up Lake line, through Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron, thenos through St. Mary's River into Supe. rior, the mighty father of many lakes and rivers. The whole distanoe from Cleveland to Marquette by this route is 650 miles; taking Ihe traveler through a long route of varied and magnificent soenery. For a long lime the falls in St. Mary's River ob structed navigation between the lower lakes and Superior. Just ten years ago this obstaole was overcome by the completion of the ship oanal around the falls. This canal, though but little more than one mile in length, is a stupendous piece of work, costing over a million of dollars, and oaoabio of passing through its massive locks the largest lake stsamers. A MEW ROUTE. To those nervous and sensitive (ur sensi ble) people, who nave a bydropbobiao dread of water, and prefer to travel by land, a new and quick route has been open ed Ihe past season, to these oool rotreats to Isorthern Lakes Columbus to Chicago, by rail, 310 miles; Chioago to Green Hay, by mil, 212 mileB; across Groen Bay to Esoa-naba,' (formerly Sand Point,) by steamer, 120 miles; troni fcsoanaba to Marquette, on Lako Superior, by the Peuinsular and Marquette and Hay l)e Noquet Railroad, 7j miles. The time on the lake route is from lour lo fire dayB; by the Chioago route, when connections are not interrupted, about two and one-half days. Tho fare is the same on both routes, $IK. Having traveled over the Chioago and Grocn Bay route, I can speak of it from personal observation and exporienoe. From Chicago to Green Hay City the traveler is taken through some of the most beautiful portions of Wisconsin; extensive prairies, highly cultivated farms and beautiful dwellings eTcrywhoro meet the eye. OSEKN BAT is of itself a groat lako, and a magnificent sheet of water ; yet it is but nn arm of the great Miohigan. it is 100 miles long, and from 16 to 40 broad. At the southern end il reocivoB the wators ot tho Fox River, at - "I KThinr. alaml. Grant. t-j- City. This is ooo of the oldest places in the Northwost; oommenced by Frenoh settlers in 17)5 formerly known as Nararino. U has a secure harbor, capable of floating the largest class steamers, and is rapidly t'cooming a great oommeroial depot. Fort Uoward, on the opposite side of Fox River, is Iho railroad terminus, irom which two sieumers, tho Van Eps and the Xlunlap, make daily trips to Ectcanaba. The western sboro cf the Bay ia flat and tame; the eastern rises in bold bluffs and ranges of hills, covered with dense forests. Here aire immense deposites of lumber, whioh, floated down the various rivers, find an outlet to the titsl. A steamboat ride of twelve hours brings you lo KS.L'A-NA-tU, tho acocnl on the third syllable. This ia on Little Bay Be Noquet river, the Northern end of tho bay. This is an infant city, christened only about twslvo months ago, Biluated on a low ssnd point, in a forost of pine and hemlock. This is the terminus of tbe Peninsular railroad from whioh you reach the lake, and plunge at once Into the heart of Ihe iron and oopper region. Tho fuundery of tho place have made oaloulation for enlargement, and the accommodation of a numerous posterity. A number of houses have already been erected, among them a lice hotel, which has already been Ihe re-sirt of many pleasure seekers during the hot months of summer. Here 1 found new rooms and everything in prime order, under tho direction of a landlord once a resident of Columbus and subsequently koeper of the American Hotel in Delaware. Amang the results of the enterprise that has oalled this young city into existence is an immense dock for loading vessels with iron ore. This is said to be the largest and most oostly dock in the United States. It ia built with large pockets or reoeptaolesfor depositing iron ore, so that it can be run out through large tunnels or sluice-ways directly into the boats beneath. These "pockets" will hold from 20,000 to 80,000 tons of ore, and ao oommodious are the arrangements that twelve vessels oan be loading at the same time. Three million feet of lumber was used In the construoticn of tho dock; tbe whole oost $100,000. I an thus particular in mentioning this nsw enterprise, beoause it is a new thing, opening a new ol.anuel of communioation with the extensive iron and copper regions of (.he lakes, it is a Chicago movement, designed toooe-n-ot Chicsgo more intimately with the great mineral region of the North. That enterprising city will now eome in competition wlib Detroit for tbe Northern luk. trade. Chicago capitalists never sleep; they push their schemes wilh untiring epergy, und if Detroit does not bestir herself, she will find hereon distanoed In this raoe by her more entorprising neighbor. Tim mx insula bailroau, It is oalled, whioh connecta Eioanaba with the Immense iren deposits of the north of Michigan. It is nd miles to Negauner, among the Iron mountains, and the design is to push it still further lo the heart of the ooppor region. At Negaunee II ccnncois Willi tne Marquette ana Day ye noqua roaa, now oomplsted to Lake Michigammi, and may be eventually extended to Ontonagon. This road, terminating at Marquette, does an immense business in the transportation nf irnn anil Irnti.nro. Hovarnl hnnvv trains era run daily between the mines aud Die lake, since the opening or tbe Peninsula road, and as a partol' that line of communication, it is doing quite a business iu the transportation or passengers, fiow and oomuiodiuua cars have been plaoed upon il. By Iho oourmsy or Ihe Assistant oupsriu-. tendenl, Mr. II. J. Col well, 1 was favored with a tree pass baok and forth to the iron mountains during my slay in Marquette. had many a pleasant and Interesting ex cursion upon the road. 1 also learned that many Invalids, sojourning in this region for their health, were ludsbted lo the kindness of the same gentleman, for free excursions over the road, whenever they chosi to viiit the Iron region, and Ihe beautiful lakes, aud wild mountain soenery, and tangieu loresis, that abound there. Having thus introduced the locality to your notice, 1 will, in my next, give you some acoount of the interesting localities, that elatoi Ihe attention of every visitor. It is, Indscd, literally, a hard place, abounding in primitive rock and iron oro; but il is a healthy plaee; every snuff of the pure air is worth a whole bottle of Cherry Balsam, or Draks's Plantation Bit-tors, Yours, Its., V. This is, the Soulh was somcwhnt at fault for rebelling, and the Korlh somewhat to blame for putting down the rebellion. The people ought to be fraternal, since they novo quit ngnting. Such is the substance ot what democrats think about in Ohio. Not very muoh food for thought, after all. What is good in it, is more than 4,000 years old, and what is bad in it, Is at least as old as the beginning of the rebellion.
