The News from Ore con Tho Ktttluaiuiiu'g Chickeii'it Co nit ii if Homo to Kountl The di-siibtrous news from Oregon, received yester day, and published in our telegraphic reports, call d forth a burst of sorrow from the Statesman, with which wo sympathise; and invoked the demon of falsehood iu his boaoin, which we are. about to eioreiso That paper charges upon the Whtgs the blame of this unhappy dingier upon the following grounds: That a bill providing for the extension of the taws of tho United States over tho territory of Oregon, and for the formation of a territorial government, was, during ihe past session of Congress, introduced into the lower house, pissed that body near the close of tli" session, and wan sent to the Senate. That on the 3d of M irch, the day of the close of the aeasiou, when the bill was beforo the Senate, the lion. John Davis, of Massachusetts, took the Door in opposition lo its passage, and spoke until Ihe hand of the clock pointed to thu minute when the sens ion of that Congress had to close. This tale is from beginning to end, a falsehood, pure, unadulterated, and without the slightest foundation in truth. The Oregon bill was before the Senate on that day, and on the morning of that day was laid on the lab e, from whence it did not again arise. The Hon. John Davis did not speak upon the bill, on that day, nor did Miy one else, so far an appears from the record. The session of Congress of that day closed ns usual, and there was, so far as appenrs, no speaking against time, by any person, or for any purpose. And now, as a matter of curiosity, we my ns well, perhaps, glance at the materials from which the war-tiiu Idled brain of the Siitcsiniu manufactured tho tissue of absurdities, which he maliciously intended to impose, np.ui the fault recollections, of general renders, as truth, within the reach uf their own mem ories. On tbo HHh of August, 1-Hi, the bill to donate to Mexico, three millions of d dlars, (wo admit that that wa u pure and unadulterated Loco toco measure,) com monly called " the Three M llion Bill," was before the Senate. This bill had been amended by the addition of the provision (a Whig measure) now known as Ihe Wilmol Proviso. O.i th it day the Senate was to nd-, jouru ; und this bill co gup in trder, Mr Lewi', lMftt)ttctt moved to stnke out the Proviso. Upon Him, a debate sprung up, which la.trd until 2 o'clock M , Ihe hour of final adjournment. Mr. Davis was u priu-cipil speaker iu this delu.le, nud we care not whether Ihe Statesman approves Ins course of opposition to the striking out, or not. And now, we have not thai species of pirijcftnlogical curiosity, Inch renders us nt nit impiisili ve, to know how a man feels when he h is perp -trnled a wilful, deliberate and wicked falsehood ; but oi this, we are assured, that the public, is not nloue olFrcted by a wanton perversion of the truth. There is a slam that remains upon the soul of the falsifier, deeper and more indelldile than Ihe mere transient effect which it produces upon tin; world, Mi-n who have no especiul regard for I he truth, should rcuteiincr this, and count it nuiDiig the evils of falsehood greater even than detection and di-gracc. And we leave this subject in tho dope, that while the Statesman professes lo prove everything by the documents, he will lay aid Ins magical propermtj to read those documents backward, instead of forward; and let the editor remember that his jaded iiingiu- a'lon is the last depositary to which he should resort for facts. L7 It ii not unfrequently the case that honest de nizens of the town are indebted to remote channels fir information of what is pa-stng immediately around them Such our city renders will find to have been the case with lliein, in regard lo the grt at Dorr Con- vent on which assembled here on theei-cr-tn-hc-rc-me inhered ()ih of M iy. Kxtrnordlnnry Development Chester County II. ink ltobbery The itlnHmorns Arrest Mt-llaineil jM vsterioutt Ditmppearnnce oi Hitchcock, the Drover, uccouuteil lor Tlie following details are extraordinary, but not the teas true. It will be remembered Hint about a month ago, n Philadelphia paper published a statement that a man had been arrested at Mulainoras, Mexico, upon a charge of robbing the President of the Cheater coun ty liaiik, ami lliat a large amount of Chester county notes was found about him the statement made the sum ffillMIIIO. 'Ihe police of Philadeluhia. and tin Rank uf Chester county, were lully aware ol ihe facts oi me arrest; but it was not until now deemed proper to publish them, as tbe whole subject was not, until late information, made intelligible. Some time alter the robbery was advertised in Tex as, a gentleman at Galveston, beard of a person who was engngeu in purchasing mules along the Uio Grnnde, and making payment in Chester county notes. The circumstances excited weighty suspicions, and purmun was maue, with a uetcrmiiiuiion to arrest ihi operators at all hazards. The dealer was arrrested ; wui ne turned out lo be only the agent of another per- son, who was at Matainorus. The agent acknowledged that he had been paying Chester county money, and that the person who employed him had a conside rable quantity ot the same kind. This made suspicion stronger than ever, and the gentleman from Galveston immediately set out for Matamoras. Here he found the man who employed this agent to buy mules, and who gave his name ns Harrison. This wus some time in February or March lant. Harrison was taken intocusiody and his effects were searched. He was found lo be in possession of eleven Chester County Rank bills each of the denomination of Hit), and it was known that he had got rid of several others. These evidences of guilt were considered so strong that Harrison was taken into custody, to nwnit a trial, having narrowly escaped a lynching, iu that d Is-tnnt ((Hurler where summary justice is meted out under martial law. Such was lus imminent peril that, tu clear himself from punishment, he voluntarily made a confession which, being corroborated by other facts, substantiated Ins allegations of innocence of the rob' bery, but involves him in another high misdemeanor ; nud at the same time clears up a very mysterious tragedy which (it was soppo-d) had been enacted m this vicinity, nud which, at the tune, created no little ex citeiueiit, Il will be remembered that some time last full, a drover Mined Hitchcock, was suddenly uiissrd from Philadelphia He went to that city from Chatham, in Chester county : havinif sold, at the latter place, a drove of cattle, to Mr. Geo. W, L -ft-vre. and obtained money It appears llmt the money (amounting to -sITuil or l-Uii) was borrowed by Mr. L fro n the iiaoK ol t. Hester county, and wns paid principally in $IIK) Mules on that Rank Well, II itchcock disappeared mysteriously nud never wus henrd of afterwards. His wife, who resided tin Ohio, came on in search of tier luiNbiind, in deep disttess ; but obtained no tidings He was supposed lo be dead. A body wus found in the Delaware, of a person who had been drowned; bnl ii it as not the body of her Im-bind. She returned to her home, unsatisfied and disconsolate. Her husband hail been robbed he wns surely murdered. A young mini of liie,h respectability , from Delaware county, hud been seen in company Willi Hilchock al the Ihcatre t the Ualluiiore cars. He was Ihe lasl person seen wilh him He was on his way South to Charleston or some other point. Suspicion fell upon this young man, that he bad made way wilh the drover, for Ihe sake of bis money, Alter the lapse of a month he relumed lo Philadelphia. Hearing hnusell charged with the abduction or murder of Hitchcock, he dehvenl himself up in (he police of thai city he estntilitdicd his innocence and was acquitted. Here the nutter rested. The occurrence was almost for gotten- Hitchcock b is not been heard of his disconsolate wife, and vano'us creditors to whom he was largely indebted, expecting in hear from huii no more. Here we resume the history of Harrison, tbe Matamoras mole driver. Finding himself roughly handled and about to lie transported to the North, he made an holiest confession of how bo came by thu Chester county notes. He stated that Harrison wns an assumed name; that his real name wns Hitchcock that on or about Hie rtlh of August, 1HI7, be obtained the money from G. W. Letevre, of Chatham, Chester county that he got the money in ( hcxttr county nottt and that he wns guilty of misconduct, which he did not like lo ackuort ledge, but lor which he absquatulated ! Doubtless the story is true. Whit an extraordinary concatenation of events Hitchcock, though in possession of s large an amount of the suspicious money, proves himself innocent, and at the same lime pleads guilty to another, scarcely less sttrocioiis act ! The mysterious disappearance of the Ohio drover, which but for this rubbery might never have been fathomed, baa been unravelled ! A young man of 'iiL'h respectabilty, suspected and examined on tbe i.oH floirj,. (,f murder has heen vindicated ! This narration is due as a single act of justice tn those who may have been suspected of the high crime of murder lo Ibe absconding drover, and the com-muniiy, who will see the necessity of being more and re on iheir guard against touching the stolen notes of the Rank of Chester county. ue Pii.i.ow Cibi;. War on the Hunks. There is a concerted effort n Hie pnrt of the Loco-foco press o Ohio, lo injure, and, if possible, break the Hanks nf this Slate, fur political purposes. It is a part of the tactics of Ibe cumpugn this season, and since the fulure of ihe pel of Locofocoism, the indi vidual liability Hank nt booster, the pack have one ti ed upon the Sandusky, Norwalk, Clinton and Circle villu insliluliona, all chartered tiy the old laws of the Stale. Cltrttand llrruld. 1 'he President lias nominated Cols. Harnry and Riley to thu Senate, for brevet brigadier geneial. Thomns Coruin An impression tins prevailed of Into that Mr. Cor-win hnd positively determined that his name should .ml come before the Whig National Convention iu connexion with tho Presidency. We know that he has always discouraged any action 011 the pnrt nf lus friends, to place him in the attitude of a candidate for nomination; nnd he has often expressed a wish to be considered out of lh question. Inasmuch, however, 1 lus position is iu nowise one of lus own selection, he cannot uovv withdraw from it, without iniurv to ttie came, and violence to the wishes of his friends. Then up to this lime, Mr. Corwin stands in the same rela tion to this subject as he lias borne during the past fifteen months, no net of Ins having removed linn from 1. e hope and believe that he will notchaiiirc this relation until the meeting of tlie Convention. No nan 111 1 lie nation would be so powerlul at the polls as riioinns Corwin. He is the very brau ideal of a Whur of the free Stales, without a spot iu lus character offensive to the true Whigs of Ihe South. No Whig in the North will hesitate to vote for him; and none at the South will reject him, who would vote for a North ern inn 11 at all. sin lus Inends love hi 111 in their htartt ; and not one of lus opponents huttt hull. His nubile course is not marked by a solitary trace that ran be cilled opto his prejudice. He will carry more North ern Stales than any other man, and ns many Southern States ns any Northern Whig can and he can get Iti.innf more votes in Ohm than anv one sunken of. I'lus we believe, from evidence in the elements of the times, which we have not room to give; and from it we argue Ins availability. The giUn-ring nf Lite Locoluco li-ists, ut Baltimore, for tie selection of their ciididale fur I lit Presidency Ukus il icj today. It is useless to speculate upon the results of mi event ft near at hand, especially bi tlut result is onu in which chance will undoubtedly hive m at: 1 1 to do; and wliicli is so very uncertain, tint llm wisest heads or, what in L'lcif.icoism is the same tlnnjf, the cutuiiiien calculator! nro nut able to predict to their own satisfaction. Oun thing, how-ever, is well understood ; and Hi it is, lint Ibis is a gamu to he played by tlie party lenders, in winch the people are passive, liivinjf ni interest, and only a uum iu:il voice in Ihe alfiir. And another tiling is equally true tli it a resort to the keenest practice an un-urujiiiloud adaption of the most unjmtiliable means, will be resorted tn, by Hie candid Ue and tlu'ir friends, to priiiiiute the interests of men, irri'pt.'ciivo of the clituns of country or tin. demands of patriotism Hut the worst feature in ull lliii, is, tint the people of t lii United States liavo accustomed themselves to itt lamely by, wli.le this process is going " watching tin progress of nlfurs rather as a nutter of curiosity tli in of interest; seeing into and through the wiles practised by mv fautioa aiiunt another; applauding the successful trickster equally with the conscientious pilriot; keeping up with the process of tlii giuie in all its stupes and seeing its Iwlluwness, its falsity, its disreg ltd of tho wishes of the people, its forget fulness of principles and of the public good ; and yet, ns partisans, allowing theuiselvei tu be bound by the result. We, Iwwpvcr, who believe in the progressivcm-na of lni.ii inity, are inclined ti think lint the extreme li.uit of ho.u.tii subserviency to Hie behests of puty and party leaders, lias been pusi'd ; and that a tune is oo.iiuij, when Itoiii'sl iiii-ii will be scared ut the barefaced pr.-fl j icy of those- wli-nu tln-y h ive hitherto alio tved to buy and sell llieiu ns beiisls in thu market, or a slaves m the pen of the Dutrict of Cidiitn'iii. The canvass in this nnttrr has been lunand b.'Hk.aii'in a yrcat measure, it lias breuse-cret aim. It has been unlinked wilh th tt conuui-tiiitc skill and artiliue which liiHjfivL'ii thu Van Uurcn achool of politic such f line for its silent but ellVclive iiiovemeiiis ; its nois' lt'ss but most powerful taetici. Tney wJI, m st probilily, succeed Vnu Hureuism, an its own riitind, and enai-d in a war peculiarly fitted to its hilnts, tstis 4 ml abilities, and bucked by Our District C'onvt'iitloii. Those of our readers who were present at tho Dig. trie! Convention at Banbury, on I'ridny lust, cannot tu i I to he nmusrit by a perun.il of ttie I'ollowin account of its doinjfs, furnished by the Ohio Statesman to its readers, They will be enabled Iroui this, also, to form snme kind of t'slimnte of the kind of men In I food which that puppr is in the habit of supplying its readets. And they will cefiie to wonder that honust, well disposed men, who rely upon such a source for information, should be often betrayed into the wildest notums, tint only as to their political opponents, but often of nidi Vidu its of their own household. The St tlesuian's ac count ol the Htinbury "fiht" is decidedly loo rich 1 1 be lost. Our readers would notexcuso us should iihliold it from them and we will not do so, Whiff District Convention for the unoiutmtit oi ueieyu us Thu Wliiir Convention for tins Contfressionat Dis trict, met in Convention yesterday touppoinl lJelegalci to the l'liihiilelbia VluK National Convention. From all accounts, the (iht between Cluyisin, Scott-is u nnd iMcheauisui, was a desperate one; but the tide of bade liually turned in I'.ivor of the latter, the frend of Juile M :Leau succeeded m the election of Mr. timn'l (.illow.iy,us dflente, and Mr. John Tees, dile, as alternate drlrifate, to llm Conveiition. Holh are decided and warm friends of the Judre ; nnd Die latter, if tin- charges preferred be true, has mi lie red in the cause, beuiif removed from the post of asNislmt clerk of Hit! last Senate, for during to go for the Judo against Mr. Corwiu. Alter the appointment of the delegates, vr under stand resolutions of instructions in favor of Gen. Scott were passed but this we have heard denied by the McLean men present; nud hence jjive it only as ru llior, Until We see the oiti--i;il proceeding. The fiirht is represented as a beautiful one. The bailies hetween Hie ditterent pirttes wued fiercely the candidates made npeecheH, earb deeming it necessary to define Ins position and the war wa'ed, until several delejritc s lefi, and .Messrs. (J alio way mid Tees-da lu came oil' victorious. A Patriotic ti tcim icK. We obsi'rve, with regret. that the delej-ate to the Baltimore Convention from this district, Ins found it unable to attend the session of that body, lie is detained nt home, much ajj iinnt Ins will, no doubt, for (he purp ne, it is said, of giving his entire attention to the wemhiy duties of the Coin inittee of Public Sifety, of whi:h, being the central member, he is chairman, Self denial of tins kind ih'iuld not go unrewarded. here ure some, however, nnliciniii moujli to in- s'lnnle tint the honorable delegile is remaining at ll'iiue jiMl at this tune, c arged with the especial duty of acting as a Committee nf Safety over his own bread and butter. We do nut profess to know, having seen nothing ourelves. We only go to tbe Post Of fice once a d iy, why should we lie expected to understand such matters i The world is very censorious. ITT We assure our fat wilted friend of the Cincinnati r'.nmnrer, that we were not so jjreen as to tako the ficu upon wlneli we baed our tt ileiiient in relation to Hie llurnet -House, entirely from the columns of h;i piper. We know the ear-marks of truth a little better than that. If the other pipers were iiiisin-firmed upon the subject, so be it, We tin not see that the Kuouirer's statement varies our own in principle, however. The fjuestion is, would the Kmuirer attempt to prevent a nun from d mg what be ol eases with his own ? A pu'dic elfirl of that kind would bo the strength it h is with the people, can scarcely fiiluf very unfortunate, tn the rod, to those whom the En- uccess. If tiif It iruburner movement is successful, Mr. Cast is said to be shelved ; and thus will be laid aside the caudidaie entitled to the highest n umber of the votes of the Convention, on the liml ballot, with avcrdrituf ukillni by he Dtmntnttic tiro-tlunts rule." Then will come the scramble. Mr. Polk lias had an hundred delegnes in Washington for several days, binkmg in the fullsii'isbme of Ins smiles his favors and Ins promises. Fresh from the people, did tll'-se men make their appearance at the capital, and cmifu cd, bewildered and hiekueyed Wil there; and who tin tell the result? It is not probable tint we shall bu aMc to announce the nntiitn tiion before W-duesd iy. When the volunteers of tins region got home, the citnens of Muldletown presented Cap'. Vanderveer With very splendid sword and honoted Itt in publicly with speeches. Ac. At tlie saute time a ' subscription was put on foot to buy a sword for the Lt. I v oionci, which was run up to snout i r. 1 am-1 tars!!! and then dropped ns a hopeless business!' Th s rnny have mtrrly h'tpprntd so ; but considering the Colonel's great taste for "cold steel" and bayonets, it ts a rather remarkable case. Hamilton Intel, lijftnrtr. Lamautiki:. A letter from Paris says "The best men in Paris love Lauiarline, and w ish lo make him President. He is a great man, and the safety of the French nation; "nil is, I ituiik, taking Washington for Ins model. He recommends t aslunglon'i punci-pies to Ihe people, and is tike bun in firm teas nnd calmness Refore the chamber closed, he stood unmoved while muskets were aimed at huii, nnd though everything has been duu by the ambitious n the members to crush hint, as wi ll as by the communists, his honesty has outstripped them nil.' The Charleston Mercury says, ihe people of Smith Carolina are opposed to sending delegates to the Loro-foco National Convention. They prefer au armed neu rulily. The Mecury says they do not expect to gather gtspci uf thorns or Jigsul thistles '. C'tH..i(fui.
