Hammond, a revival preacher, Is now In his second week at Indianapolis, and his meetings are attended by thousands. An extraordinary degree of Interest Is manifest ed ; as many as three hundred persons rising lu one meeting and asking to bo prayed for. A special from Indianapolis states that on Weducsday afternoon two men name Isaao Hardin and Joso Williams, with four horses, wero killed by lightning while plow- In a Held near Martinsville. Six or seven persons were plowing In tlio same Held, an tho horses being frightened by tho crash o( lightning, ran away, ami several wero killed Tub Cincinnati Times of last night tells this whopK'r: 1 n the capacious bread-basket of a doll belonging to Ills little daughter, Martin Stllleii the other day found eight hundred out a thousand dollars lu green backs which had mysteriously disappeared aoout a year ago. Lucky Martin! We hoiw the Tlmes's story will not set all rash fathers to ripping open all the doll babies of the family to And lost money, TiiKRR has been an Immense fall In whisky at Pittsburg. Yesterday afternoon 8,000 barrels of whisky wore precipitated from the nftli story to tho basement of John Finch's bonded warehouse, lu South Pittsburg. Tho men employed about tho building heard a creaking noise, anil fled, before tho accident, In great alarm, and uot a moment too soon. The crash was terrific, shaking tho adjacent buildings. The people In the neighborhood giipiKiscd ft slight shock nt earlhiuake. The building III which the accident hapietii d was a handsome brick structure, ami was sup-Hwd safe. Fifty barrels of tho liquor were Cauoerniua: .idliy and Indecency. We cmiy the following Irom a recent arti cle In Blackwood : It cannot lie asserted by tho severest moralist that the ballet, though It partakes of the character of a pagan festival, is of necessity Indecent or immodest, and that it may not lie made the source of much Innocent and Mined enjoyment. It Is a mistake, too, to suppose thai the ballet bos exclusive attrac tions lor men. iuiucutcii ami accompusued women, both young aud old, lovo to see a kaudsomc girl, handsomely dressed or draiied, displaying herself In the graceful figures and movements of the dance, iihiii the same principle that they admire a picture, a poem, a llower, a landscape, or anything In the works ol God or man that uppcals lo the sense of beauty, proportion or harmony. And if ouc such young woman Is a lieatitlful sight,-ll fly or n hundred more of such women dressed alike or slightly differing for the contrast of color, are jmri passu, a beautiful sicclaclc, when they iierl'orin their gyrations and evolutions uion the stage, and neither by gesture nor sigu, nor suggestion convey, or seek lo convey, to the mlud of the Iwholdcr any Impression but. that which springs from the legitimate exercise of their art. The scanty drapery of the ballet girls, when not carried to the extreme that sug gestsnot dancing, or the ease and grace of lancing, but something else is no offense tlther against modi sty or good manners. Yet ever since the days of Martial, aud perhaps long before, the I'rildes, Puritans ami sterner moralists of society have seen in the public dance u means for the corruption of public manners through the eye, which they have never wearied in denouncing. Addison, in the urllclclu thcSeclator, from which extract has already been made, has a good naturcd lllngittthe stage dancers of his day, when ballet was ns yet unkuown. "I," he says, who know nothing of women out from see ing plays, can give great guesses nt the whole structure of the lair sex by being innocently placed In the pit, and Insulted by the pcttl-eoalaofllic dancers the advantages of whose pretty persons are a great help to a dull play." The costumes of the modern ballet of thirty years ago, when Tngllonl's graceful skirts barely displayed the knee, was objected to by the prudes of both sexes. In spite, however, of objections, good-natured antl otherwise, the ballet has continued to grow In popularity and the skirts of the dancers to grow less; and such entertainments have spread from tho Italian opera house to the great, and afterward to the minor theaters, aud, finally, have Invaded and taken possession of the music halls. Bailey's lovely statue of "Eve at the Fountain," lu which there Is not the slightest pretence of drapery, or concealment of the divine form, fresh from the hands of the Creator, Is purity itself; and any one who sees Impurity in it has the Impurity in his own heart. In the same manner, there Is no indelicacy in the display of the pretty bare legs of little maidens of from four or Avu years old, or In the bare feet and ankles of the bonny Scotch lasses, Innocent alike of shots and stockings and of evil Intent, though thero would be lutlecency In the display of a naked leg anil foot lu the streets of Loudon or Edinburg by full grown damsels who made the display for a meretricious purpose. Thero arc statues and statuettes to be seen all over Europe, In which nudity Is as complete as It Is beautiful; but when such statues or statuettes are imitated by purveyors uf obscenity, aud crowned with a modern bon net, wrapped in a modern shawl, and encased in modern stockings, and nothing else, their vile Intention becomes apparent, and they fall properly under the cognizance of the police. The display Is not Indecent ptr w, as when an actress of high merit and genius, In default of an aclor of truthfulness and talent enough to undertake the part, appears as Borneo; any more than It Is indelicate or improper (or a man to hide, the form by appearing In petticoats to play off ono of the witches in Mac-lieth. The Intention is everything, Just as it is In killing. If yon intend to kill, yon are A murderer, and deservo the murderer's fate. If you kill lu sclf-dclcusc, ami In a just and patriotic cause like a soldier you aro not to blame, but virtuous. In like manner, the scanty tlraiery of the ballet for the purposes of art, ami art alone, is no offense against good laste or good manners; but if the ballet girl not for the sake of art, bill for the sake ' of attracting lewd attention overdoes the scantiness ami betrays the Immodesty of her mind liy Her motions or gestures, sho commits an offense, and ought lo lie hissed from the stage which she disgraces. H al any place of public entertainment the undress of women is of a character to deter men from Introducing their pure minded mothers, wives, sisters or. daughters to witness the performance, such place of entertainment Is doomed to bankruptcy. It may irag on a precarious existence for a while, y keeping within a hair s breadth of the penalties of lite law that prohibits the Immodest exposure of the person; but Ihe world and Ihe world s opliilon arc against It, anil it must go the way of nil anachronisms ami offenses ngnliist the public conscience. Bui let us not. In the outcry against short petticoats, commit treason against an art that ministers, like all other arts, to Ihe gratlllca-tlon of the sense of lieauty. All true art is HKo music ll cannot lie indecent uor improper In Itself, and Is only made so by the the extraneous association of words ami thoughts that come out of I ho mind of thu observer, and not out of the things observed. "To tho puro nil things aro pure." "lu tinncing, says bir iticiiarn Steele, "an tno charms of an agreeable erson aro In their highest exercise ; every limb anil feature ap pears wltn lis rt'tlcciivc grace. As all art is an Imitation of nature, so Is Ibis an imita tion of nature lu its highest excellence. The business of dancing Is to display beauty; aud tor that reason all distortion antl mimicries as such aro what raise aversion Instead of pleasure. The dancers on our stage aiu very faulty lu this kind ; anil what limy mean by wreathing themselves into tucu iwstures us It would be a pain for any of thu aiectalors In stand In, and yet hope to plcaso those spectators, is uiilniclllgliilc. Anil it Is In this resect that reform Is, lu our day, still mora needful than It was In tho days when Addison and Steele were the arbiters of tasto ami the high priests of criticism.
