Private letters from well Informed sources iu Cuba reiterate the statement that hostilities are practically at an end for the present, "wiug to tne prevalence ol cholera and yellow fever Quoor Case A Lanosstar Man Hakos an ixplanatioD. Editors Journal Now that the recent reat excitement over tho late Jail deliveries has somewhat abated, ami cards from Deputy Sheriffs Hull and Williams, Mrs. Ueade, Ex-Mayor Bull, Mr. Earhart, the County Commissioners, Commissioner Lisle, "inadvertencies," County Commissioners minus one, lilobbs, Kombo, A Tax-payer, 4 Co., have ceased to bo part of the current litera ture of the morning dailies, I hope you will permit me lo give you a case wherein officials can noi be blamed for being derelict In duty or not having a due regard for the' interests of tho commonwealth. Whatever some of our county officials may have done, whether the escape of tho eleveu prisoneisln June was a "put-up" job for which a pecuniary consideration of f 1,000 was paid to Hie Jailors, 1 r not; whether tho ru-escapo of Heade ami Mt-i'hersou was accomplished the night of the lOih of July by an additional bribe or not, will be matter for investigation hercalter; but there Is oue undeniable, incontrovertible fact, that stands out in radiant colors, brighter tliau the noonday sun, snd that Is, thai a moro efficient police force no city can boast or one more watchful ol the city's interests. But on this force Is oue whose gentlemanly deportment, coriect moral habits, strict integrity, analytical iniiiil, personal bravery anil extraordinary shrewdness and judgment must commend liim to Hie cutiro civilized world as the ne plus ultra of all that is ' great, grand and glorious" iu police ethics. But to my tule: Two weeks ago a young mechaulc came to Columbus fur the purpose of getting work at his business. Ou Friday inoruiug, havlug obtained work, ho commenced labor, aud from that tiino ou worked every day, besides puttlug iu three whole nights arfru, until arrested by policeman McEwen, at 10 o'clock at ulght, last Monday, soarched.taken to Iho calaboose and put iu tho same cell with roaches, lico aud bed-bugs, where sleep was Impossible. He was taken before tho Mayor at 0 o'clock iu the morning, where tho charge was made by "Bossy," that thcyoung niau had lu some way been connected with the jail- deliveries, as he was from Lancaster and so was Abe Ueade I But that was too frivolous ho entertained by tho Mayor, and thou comes the accusation that ho associated with uoue but gunblers and .thieves; but ''Boss" could point to no case whore the prisoner bad ever been seen with anybody who were not meehamcs or tailoring men, and but ouo time that he had ever been lu a gambling room. Then came the complaint that this young man was a common loafer, loiterer, vagrant hud no visible means of support, and was detrimental to tlio best Interests of commu- lty and peaco aud dignity of the city. The Mayor luquircd of the prisoner "What havo you to say to the last ?" Prisoner That there is not oue word ol truth iu any of It, and that I cuu prove by rec foremen that 1 have not been on the street one day since 1 have been in town- hat when not at work I have been to bed bv half past ten every night, aud that I am seven illars In advance for board. Mayor Policeman McEwen's word will have to be taken; 1 don't think the charges are sustained, lint I will lino you light-one lollar. Wc look with very suspicious eyes ou people from Lancaster. Prisoner I think the Ewings, Tall. inadges, Hunters, Brasecs, Shermans and Van Trumps will compare favorably with any men in this city; but as 1 have no money, join win nave 10 wan. tin 1 get it. Mayor rake him over, aud the nrisoner with proper escort went "over," and there he was. "Millions for defense," etc., and he thought ni staying mere and breaking stone until doomsday, when buzz camo a bounc- ng big cockroach nt Ills head; he slew him another lying in ambush on tho coal bucket. Alter carefully brushing tho rude bench and lying down lo gather his thoughts and nerve himself for a prolonged siege, the m ill V gaiuercn in lorce and bo was attacked on every side, the cockroaches let loose ou bis lace, the lice attacked 011 the left, and a raking lire from the bed-lings In the tree tops and on tho right, caused a capitulation, and the prisoner drew up papers addressed to T. W. lallmadgo toAako him out. Mr. Tall- niadge, notwithstanding tho fact that ho was bom In Lancaster, drovo boldly down to the Mayor and hail thu prisoner released, who returned 10 his work next day. This s all of a subject that may bo interesting to but few, but the poor have rights as well as the rich, ami the apologies thai have been made to me by Ills Honor don't release me from the ft 85, wash tlio blood-stained shirt that liows a gallant light, or soothe the feelings of relatives aud friends, of whom I think I have as many as ordinarily falls to the lot of those who have nothing but stout hearts and willing hands with which to support themselves. Why Policeman McEwen acted lu the way he did Is a mystery. Ho had never seen mo but once on Hie street and then lu company with a friend i had known from childhood. 1 had never told anyone of his many offenses known to 1110 Why "should ho make alll- lavlt Ui so many charges, all of which weru lalsef Because ho and another Columbus policemen weru arrested and nncd In Lan caster for being caught In a house of Ill- lame, la every person from Lancaster to be proscribed by this very efficient or ojlicious policeman? Thu samples rehired to by Dr.Landou can l! seen at the rooms of the Stale Hoard of Agriculture. This exicrliucut Is a strong argument In lavor of planting inure careful-ly, less seed lo the sere linn Is generally planted now, and by this careful planting securing all abundant yield, as In Hie esse noted alsive. |
