And now, to-day, if the nation waa to be imperiled, and there were juM two mode of aaving it to trust to the ehaneea of civil war, or to the ehaneea of a free vote of the Southern people I would very greatly prefer totake the latter chance than the former. The above is the exact, certillerl, phonographic report of Horace (irecley's Inn-gunge at Pittsburg in hi Western Swing Around the Circle, both as to his position in 1801 and in 1872, an retorted in the New York Tribune. HKATdit HnMNKii ha written a letter declining the nomination of the Liberal' nnd Democrat for Governor. His Holiness Pope Pirn IX, tiring of hi Mlf-impOHcil confinement to the Vutl-ran, has ventured beyond it precinct for a walk in the garden of 1'onta Delia Zccrn. This is the first time the venerable old gentleman ha gone beyond llic limit of the Vatican since the occupation of Home by the Italian Government. Kvi-tlently the only restraint on tho Popo in self-imposed. Gkkkixy admit that he ha about tho ! most worthless nnd inefficient set of newspaper orgnn ever saddled upon an honest candidate. Ho said It was absolutely . necessary for him to mnko his Western trip In order to "disabuse tho clouded minds of the tcople." Wo look upon this a a direct insult to tho able editors of I how twin twinklcrs, tho Commercial and Enquirer, to say nothing of the Sentinel.Geneuai. .Ma sky, a distinguished Con. federate officer, hag written a long card, which he publishes in the Nashville Banner, arguing the fitness of Grant for President over Mr. Greeley's claims. The tenor of hi canl urges tho Southern people to harmonize In support of Grant ns the choice of tho Northern masses, making the distinction that reconciliation is not desired with Grant or Greeley, but rather with the great body of the people. General Mnncy hns the right idea. When that pious old Saint, Clair, went through Gnhannn, the other day, certain wicked little boy went nut and mocked, crying, f io up, thou sorehead. And n grent jackas did come out and destroy the wicked little boy. This is tho story of one Elon-gated. Dryer ccimen of a joker than any other place can boost of. Seems to us we havo heard something like this story before, told by a Sunday School Superintendent jwrhaps Jim Gordon. Itut can't lio certain. While we cannot but admire the skill with which our neighbor of the Sentinel catches up the step of a regulnr Demo cratic organ In the uiatter of bolting, wo submit that It must bo new gospol to the faithful, who have hold it aa a car. I in si doctrine that there should bo "rotation In oflice," to find this recently converted Gentile organ advocating the election of candidates on tho specific ground oC Tung experience In the otiiee they desire to hold on to. That used to be a good Democratic reason for rotating the man out of office, But the longer we livo the more wo find h'Grnti out. Col. John B. Neil, Privnto Secretary, has received Information from Governor Noyes, who is at Ncwburg, In connection with tho destruction of the Norllurn Lunatic Asylum. It lias been decided unnecessary to call a special session of the Legislature, but tho ooininiftcoa on Finance, and Charitable Institutions will bo summoned to meet in Ncwburg on tho 11th Instant. Temporary roofs will bo placed on the wings of tho building, which nro rnpnblo of receiving about three hundred patients. The (ioTcrnor met all the trustees of tho Asylum, but one, at Now burg, together with the architect nnd contractor. The tmipornry roofi will give place, at soon as possible, to fireproof roofs. In the meantime the remaining three hundred patlonls will bo provided fot until tho building Is rebuilt or other Institutions nre selected for them. - 1IANAI K1.K. v Thin distinguished trailicker seems to think he hag such tremendous influence that ho can transfer the German vote of this countrv nt will from one party to the other, provided he is properly compensated. He hoH a very humble estimate of the intelligence and patriotism of Ins countrymen, and a huge one of himself. A noble in a monarchy could not assume the possession of more power than does I thin Hamilton county mercenary. For! the small sum of thirty thousand dollars he offered to support Grant, demolish Schura, transfer the German vote to the Republican pnrty, nnd raise the devil generally In the ranks of the Liberal and Democratic amalgamation. When that amount wan considered too heavy he fell, like a liberal minded man, one-half, and agreed to do it for fifteen thnumind, because he did not wnnt to quibble on small matters; and when, afterword, he could get nothing, hi magnanimous soul turned from tho whole transaction with disgust, and "he opened hi mouth and spako". against Grant and-republican ism, nnd by his voice and press pitched in for the succor of Greeley. The query here arises, What took him into the ranks of the opposition? He had been coop-! crating with the Kepuhlicans, and main taining their measures and men, but refused to go further unless he was paid. 1 Principle wan nothing with him; money was his motive power. With him the question was, How much can I make by being true? If I cannot be bought to be faithful, I will desert and tako my talent and nowspniier to another party. Now we should like to know how much, if anything, was paid by the Democrat for the services of this distinguished mercenary. It is scarcely to he presumed that if he demanded thirty thousand dollars from his friends in whose sentiment he sympathized for his labor, that ho would join the foes ho bad constantly denounced for nothing. It doe not seem reasonable that he should so act. If ho was paid, we should like to know who paid him, when, where, and the amount. Fred. Hassan rek in a greater fool than we supposed him to bo if he wanted to charge hi friend thirty thousand dollar for his influence, and then give it to hi foes without cnii)cuMntinn. "That duck can't dive." We shall watch to see the effect of thi transaction on the German vote, and learn whether they are mero creature of barter nnd sale, as Hussaurek seem to tl ink. For oursclve we have too much retqtcct for them to entertain for a mo ment inc notion ttiat tliev are the tools of demagogues. The Sentinel says, since the Democrats have conceded the large offices and the platform to the Liberals, it in no more than fair that tho Lilicral should "vote for a few small oflice" with the Democrat. Consequently It advise tho Lilieral to ','go tlio whole hog," and vote for Democrats for county and other small office. You see it i only a matter of office with this grand combination. There is no such matter as principle. Tho Democrats are to help the Lilvrat to get control of the National pap spoon, so that a few Republican soreheads can bo plnstered with the IJalm of Joy ; tho few Kepnblican soreheads will cheerfully hold nil the large offices ami vote for l)emocrats for "a few small office." Tho three million Ifemu-cralic voters can thus be made useful, nnd tho foreheads obtain by thi means what they lost or failed to get as Republicans. n e nre delighted to arrive nt an accurate understanding on the subject. Since tho Tribune ceased to be a Kepnblican newspaper and became a weak personal organ of Mr. Greeley it has erased to be the Tribune. It is now the New York Daily Tribulation, Halstcad says Greeley enn't rend it without going to sleep. Tilton says the grent need of the Liberal pnrty is that it hns no adequate organ, nnd he specially designates the Tribune by nnmo as " not such an organ." And now comes Mr, Greeley in person and mourns tho same grent need, excusing himself for making hi Western tour, (after pledging himself at Portland to the sentiment that the Presidential candidate ought not to make speeches,) by pleading the necessity of " disabusing the clouded minds of the people." In view of tho fact that tho Liberal movement started out with tho prestige that "all tho ablest newspapers in tho country gave it their support," these words nre ns sad as " It might havo been." For tirrlcyttCM to Rend. There in ono thing about n hen, says Josh Billings, that looks liko wisdom, they don't kauklo much until nftcr they liave laid their egg. Some folk are always a bragging and kackling what they are agoing to do before hand. Dtt. Gkkllcy having been written to in reference to equinoctial squalls, replied thai the innjority of fanners knew very little about the equine ox. Tho proportion of tho breed is attended, ho writes, with couaidcrnblo trouble, often producing squalls of a terrible character; but when the animal i dropped and thoroughly broken, It is gentle and kind. Great care should bo observed that they are not dropped oftcner than once a month, as It Is apt to degcueruto the stock. He snys that he knew one equine ox that "racked" a whole winter in ono stable nnd wnsn't tired a bit when spring came. In taking lcavoof tho subject tho Doctor siyi when ho Is elected President he intend to oontributo a few volumes on thi suhjtict, as ho feols assured tho equine ox is destined at a future day to take n lending position on the farm and turf. What 11 mercenary wretch t Baron Hns tings died In England Mmi- uny nigui. The miseratle Tribune ha been backed down from ono slander after another until it is difficult to find a number which does not contain a retraction. A naked inventory of Tribune He for tho canvas would fill column. And they arc so stupid they put Mr. Greeley to sleep, nnd so maladroit that even Sister Til ton tears Its beautiful blonde huir, and implore Heaven and Wood hull by tarns to send some one capable of grinding an organ. ' The stupid Tribune revamped nn old lie about Grant, and spent week upon It, which some one quietly squelched by showing that it had been utterly pulverized by the Tribune itself, eighteen month ago. It then slunk out of it, in a mean, unmanly, contemptible little paragraph, stuck away in ono corner of the paper where it was hoped no oiio would see it. Within a few hours it had a tutcndous lie concocted about Speaker BUiiWrColuiniu in length, charging that he had mado a sum nearly equal to the National debt out of corrupt vote for the Kansas Pacific Kailroad Company, And now 4-onics the irate Commercial, (disgusted that any Liberal organ should do such clumsy work,) and plants its elephantine heel on this miserable job of cobbling. In a neat little double-leaded paragraph of about seven line the Commercial disposes of the matter by showing that "Maine was not a member of Congress at the time of the alleged contract," W e defy any power to show 111 all the pnrty organs ever printed as muny lie a tho Tribune ha forged and uttered in the present canvass. Yet papers claiming to bo truthful and resectable speak of "partisan lies" a the exclusive product of the party organs. The State Jouhnal is a parly organ an organ of tho most glorious party known to history nnd we cannot but feel indignation at such injustice. We have endenvored to maintain an honorable reputation for veracity nnd candor, and it is hut just th.it we should r:scnt such thoughtless or malicious misrepresentations, nnd denounce them as criminally carets and unfair, if not maliciously and willfully untruthful. This forenoon there was a large procession composed of tho different political organizations, military companies, bands, representative of different trades at work at their respective vocations, etc. At two o'clock this afternoon the crowd assembled at the public square, where they wero addrcjwed by Senator Henry Wilson in a lengthy speech, which was enthusiastically received. After Senator Wilson' speech a meeting at the Central Kink was organized, which was addressed by Goti. Garfield and 11. C. Parson. This evening there was a tine torchlight procession, and many residences and public buildings throughout tho city wero brilliantly illuminated. An immense crowd gathered at the Public Square, nnd were addressed by Speaker Blaino. The following is an extract from his remark : This campaign will remain memorable a the campaign of lie, the most monstrous, the most malicious nnd nt the same time tho most silly. The leader in this wild carnival of defamation and slanders is tho New York Tribune, tho personal organ nnd mouthpiece of the Democratic candidate for the Presidency, To show yon how reckless and how senseless this mania for falsehood will become, let me make a personal allusion to myself. In the New York Tribune of Saturday last, and also of yesterday, I nm charged, not only as a Representative in Congress, but us Speaker of the House, with having received one mil lion nine hundred and thirty thousand dollars of stock of the eastcru'division of the Union Pacific Kailroad company for my services ana miiuenco to procure the passage of the original Pacitiu railroad bill of 1S(2. The Tribune gives the date of the net in the same article in which it makes tho charge, not seeming to notice, in its blind desire to assail inc, that it was simply convicting itself of falsehood and of hilly. Now, gentlemen, please observe that in IHfJ, when this act was passed, I had not tnken my seat n Congresj, I had not " been elected to Congress, indeed 1 had not been even nominated for Conorem when (lie act to winch the Iriounc refers became n law. I was a member of the Maine legislature and Sjicnker of the Iiwer House, and had no more to do with Congressional legislation than tho fish maidenH and tide waters on Kennebec river; and yet thciScw lork fribuno asserts and repeals that for my service and influence in Congress, at tho time 1 was a meinlwr of tho Maine Legislature. I re ceived nearly two million dollars in the stock of a creat railroad corporation. And now, gentlemen, if I were to stop here, after demonstrating tho utter absurdity of thu charge, the Iribuue would come out coolly and say that Speaker Blaine had not denied it. Let me then deny it in the presence of this vast assemblage, and deny it in a most emphatic manner, Neither in 18112 nor in any subsequent year did I ever receive or own, directly or indirectly, n single dollar of stock in the Eastern Division of tho Union Pacific Kailroad Company or ny ottier division 01 the f aciho Kailroad Comnanv. Nor did lover receive a lnl. ' lar, directly or indnectly, from the sale of stock of that company. In short, ' gentlemen, I stamp tlio 'wholo story as not only false on its face, but absurll i and ridiculous. But I don't expect to - make a denial that will satisfy the Trib- I biine. A few weeks since, when the story was started that Secretary Boutwcll. Vice ! President Colfax, Senator Wilson, Mr. j Garfield, Mr, Duvics, myself ami others had been bribed by presents of stock in 1 the "Credit Mobilier," 1 published a card j on the evoof the Maine election, saying I ' bad never owned, directly or indirectly, j through myself or through another, a single dollar of Btock in tho Credit Mobilier. The New York Tribune pro- nounccd this denial evasive mid unsatis factory, nnd said 1 did not deny that 1 had received any dividend or profits therefrom. Any candid man 1 think would seo tbat-mv card was in tended to bo exhaustive nnd to exclude nil supposition of ownership; and let me sny now, however, that not only did 1 never own a share in the Credit Mobilier. but I never received directly or indirectly a single penny therefrom in any manner or sIuihj whatever. But this mania for hearing falo witness ngninst your neighbor ha seized Mr. Greelev, person- mi,', .in ni.ii 11 uiu iicw mriv iri'nuir, for I observe that in a recent speech in Pcnnsylvnnin, ho states l lint more thnn one hundred thousand dollnrs had been expended by the Republicans of Maine in the purchase of votes nt tho recent lection, isow. w, in the verv nature of things, it would bo impossible for Greeley 10 Koowuini in is was true: nut 1 Know It to lw nliDolntcIv untrue. COMLV Editor. OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE CITY. What tireeley Known About Disunion, In 101. demamled that there ahould be a air, apen, frce diaeumion heore that Southern people, and an honeat, unterrijied, unconstrained rote, aud i they approved, if the pcdple of the South taid they wanted disunion, J would fo-sent to it. in iH7a. Fred. I nm chair man of tho Htnte committee, and on niv I order every dollar of H10 fiimlit of that committee wan disbursed, nnd from fifft to I '"''t we did not have in all tho control of 1 but little more thnn twelvo tliniiniul dol- hirn; and I further atwert that every dollar of thin amount wan ex (tended either in payment of upeakcru, the distri-huticfti f doc(imentn and patoin,or bring ing homo absent voters. These aeeonnte of the Hlalo roinniittce are kept with regard to exnctncnn, and tho entire committee of sixteen men will testify to the truth of what I itate.
