There are few to whom the fame and merits of the great Condc arc unknown, and who have not heard of the great deeds performed by the victor of Rocroy at the early age of twenty-one: but there mav be some who have heard little of Clcmence de 'Maille, bin wife, save that she wan the niece ofCatdinnl Richelieu: her virtues, her sufferings, her heroism, are unrecorded in the histories which give so pompous an account of her husband's deeds of arms. There was a magnificent ball given in the palace of Cardinal Richelieu on the night of the 7th of February, 1641. The whole of a noble suite of rooms, extending round three fides of the court yard, were brilliantly lighted up. and thrown open for the reception of the most noble and diMinguiehed persons In Paris. There wbh everywhere the sweetest rmihic, swelling through the lofty rooms, und graceful bauds of dancers keeping time to ito Htrnlus; and there were llf-ht girlish figures, and stately matronly ones; young men dressed in all the loppery of the period, whimpering soft nothings to the young and beautiful; und grave politicians on the wntcu to observe who (he king upoke to, and Richelieu smiled on; there was Anne of AuMria, and her enfeebled luifband Louis XIII.. the beautiful Genevieve de BourlHUi, afterwards Duchcssc de I,im- gucville, .uiiueuiolfieiieuc nionipcnser. uieMuir child, when her sweet, clear voice was suddenly heard in a paino of the debate. " I am not,'1 she said, " either of an age or of an experience that bhould entitle me to give my advice. I have no other wish tlinu to pay all deference to that of my mother-in-law : but I entreat her most humbly, that whatever may happen, I may not be separated from my son my only remaining hope. I will follow him everywhere with joy, whatever dangers I may hnvo to encounter, and I am ready to expose myself to anything for the service of the prince, my husband."Tears filled the eyes of tho proud daughter, Montmorency, at tho noble words of thedeppised Clemenec. ".Since we both,'' said she, ' have but one objt'ct.we will both thare the same fate, and unite in bringing np your ron in the fear of CJod and the service of hla king." nut it was not so to dc; me aged niouier 01 fnra. ah o had nassed at the head of the army. in defence of her ion and husband. She had seen that son and husband treat her with hatred and scorn, anxious only to make her sign the deed which transferred her property to them, and had fainted in her son's arms on bidding him farewell. Then tho days of Bordeaux rose to her view, when her glance animated thousands, and hr word was law, and she herself was filled with the blissful buoyant hope of gaining the love and esteem of her husband fur whom she would willingly have bled. Now, all was gone husband, child, friends, fsrac, station, liberty ! How can she boar it 1 ' But oh, I am very, very wrong,' she thought, raising her oyes to the clear, blue-heaven. Fastening my beast to a hook, I went to tho door and knocked. A girl, just on the verge of womanhood, opened it. "Does Mr. McL d live here!" I asked. with trembling. " lie does, sir." 1 h he or bis wife at borne ? ' " Mother is within, sir; but father is in the field. Please to walk in, sir." My eye glanced through the open parlor door. A flue carpet covered tho floor. There were handsome chain nnd other furniture ; but I saw no more, for Mrs. McL d by thU time was informed of a gentleman's arrival, and lost no uuiu in matting nor appearance, "uuuu uuu; Hate Journal. Hamilton and Hunt, were requested to repair to the spot to render assistance to the sick. Exaggerated statements have of course gone abroad, and wo have been at some pains to ascertain tho facts In order to disabuse the public mind and to lay the full particulars beforo our readers. It appears that a few dayB since, a case of cholera occurred on the low ground between the railroad aud the upper town, where a large body of laborers were at work. The case terminated fatally with fearful rapidity, and so great was the consternation among the laborers, that a large number of them at once abandoned the work. On Friday, the disease raged with violence, and on Saturday, when Die. The princess dowager, Madame de Longue-ville, and Clemenec, were holding a melancholy council at the Chateau do Chantilly, not only re-pcctlng the best means of restoring the princes to liberty, but of providing for their own safety for a regiment of guards bad been sent towards Chantilly from Solraons, and a Ittlre de-eachit was daily expected. Lenet, the faithful adviser of the unfortunate prince, covered with trees, rose here from its boiom through the plain and mingling in many tunny distances, lie vineyards, orchards, lowly farm buildings, and stately chateaux, till the viuw is bounded by those blue bills whence Clcmence once had called together so many brave hearts in defence of ber husband. And here, on a lovely spring evening in the year 1671. ihfl first oveninff of her captivity, Clcm ence do Maille leaned over the battlements, with mSVVt hYS.pl" Clpmenci-. who was .lill Healed by all a. . proposed taking the young Duke beyond the j y fixed oulhesceneoelow.hiitwiih thoughts Loire, ana endeavoring to raise uer a party in miueriiig ir his father's favor. 'If God gave me strength then, when I was n mere child m experience and understanding, to plead hit husband's cause before thousands, and en- courn ced armed men to battle in his behalf, some mistake In the direction; this can't be John's home ;' yet It is the second on the left. Tho Fpecial correspondent of the New York Times, dated Washington, July 21st., says; Private letters from Mexico by the last packet, Indicate that Santa Anna is likely very soon to place himself at the bead of the Liberals, aud to wage opposition to the Church party. The money he obtains under the Gadsden Treaty enables him to dispense with the services of the Church as a financial agent, for the present, and to try the experiment of establishing his government on something of the liberal principles which work wonders in other countries If he earnestly acts about the work of liberalizing his administration, It Is to be expected that he will speedily negotiate that treaty of commerce with the Uni ted State a fir which wo hoTO been so long deal rous.
