Tbe Buchanlen are now showing their hatred of Free Speech, Free Institutions, and Fremont, by fabricating and publishing tbe most unblushing falsehood against him. At tbe same time, their own words on record oondemn them. She elands tirm on tbe Republican platform. From Indiana we bare bat meagro reports, but so far u tbey go, they Indicate the election of tbe Republican Slate ticket From Pennsylvania the returns are very much mixed and Inconotuklve. We piefer to wait until we receive fuller returns before we say aught In rsgard to that Slate. There are some things, however, which are Rxed, aod fixed too, in ft way that wo do not tike, and least of all we do not like the defeat ol our eloquent and faithful Representative to Oongrets, Hon. Samuel Gaixowat. We expected, and bad a right to expect, ft very different rviult, for Mr. Galloway had been "bo clear la 1 hia great office "bud reflected so muob honor apon the district, and bad gained for himselt ft name, throughout tbe Union, of whiob any man might well feel proud. It is useless at this time to go Into so exam. I nation of the cause or cancel of bis defeat. It Is dearly traceable to tbe conduct of the Fill-more men. It waa la their power either to elect him or to defeat him; tbey have uhoien the latter alternative. They have defeated blm, but tbey bave not elected Mr. Stanbery, their candldat. Indeed we doubt whether his vote will exceed ouo thontand la Ibe entire district. They have elected Samuel S. Wo bave the complete votes of the District with the exception of Darby lownthlp, In Pick away county, and we make the majority in tbe district for Mr. Cox about 301). It may be less, It may be more. Franklin county, Mr. Gallows) s own county, did well. The Bucbaniers expected ft majority of three or four hundred io Franklin, In place of gutting which, however, tbey got none at all. By our returns tbe vote In Franklin li tie, between Galloway and Cox. Licking county disappointed us badly. We bod reason to expeot Ave buodred majority in that county for Galloway, Instead of which bo doesnot get over fifty. In Pickaway oonnty tbe msjorliy for Cox is about three buodred and fl.ty, which elects him. William Groetbeck beats Scott Harrison, and Mr. Gurley, tbe Republican oandldate In the second District. Mr. Groesbeck Is a gentleman of ability aud of great personal worth, and It li said is opposed to making Kansas ft Slave Slate. We iuflnltely prelsr htm U Scott Harrison, though we would hare been much hotter pleased with tho election of Mr. Gurley. Gvorge II. Pendleton is elected In tbo first district, now repreeenled by Hon. Tim. C. Day. His Republican competitor, Mr. Taft, gave him n good race, but tbe diversion of tbo Fillmore vote to Mr. Turence, gave tbe district to the Bachanlere, and so the city of Cinoiunall and Uatiiiltoo Co. will be rcprctenled In the next. This, however, Is contradicted, We think Mr. Cam pi 11 is elected. Bingham and Sapp are certainly dieted, and wt tbluk Herton Is also In tbo Fairfield district, although the Bucbaniers hereabouts claim (bat FalrQcld bos given Medlll 1400 majority. The Reserve districts have all done well. So bu tbe Darke and Miami district, In which Nichols la undoubtedly reelected. B. F. Loi ter is alto elected in tho Stark district. Tbe Republican State ticket la eteoted In the State by ft large majoritynot leas, we think, than twenty thousand, and It may go up as high aa thirty thousand. We have lost some members ot Congress, e batweeo tbe North and tbe South should be settled, and a fraternal feeling restored. And whou "Alum uua" talks of ' driving me out" for sentiments onct held by these great men, I caunot help thinking that bo Is becoming rather fanatical. For tbe information of " Alumuui," I will state tbat he has put himself to unnecessary trouble in blazoning tbin matter before the public. Tbe whole subject belongs exclusively to tbe jurisdiction of tbe trustees of tbe University. They are men of Integrity aud Influence, and have at heart tbe best Interests or tb:i University. There le no diOioulty in bringing this, or any other question relating to the laculty or students before tbem. " Alumnus" bu also made another mistaku In supposing Ibat ibe faculty lake unnn tbftroaelvss to iniln.nc, thn im. iitical opinions of tbe Bludents. The student oome to college generally, wilh their party poli- iiAcu, bdii it is exceoaingiy rare ror tbum toohaage while here. It has, however, been often remarked, that a verv vlntant n.rti. sau at college is pretty sure to " turu over" tw- iora no ou iert college long, i hive been con-neoted wilh our University, u student and pro-feasor, for six years, and am Ires tn anv tt,.t t know of no Institution, North or South, from which partisan politics and sectarian retimnu are eo entirely oxolodtd. An yet wt are too ueu uaoava vj tan oigota Of DOID. for my own part, I do Dot know tho politics of motu than one in a hundred of the students, except as I might iufur to whiob tmrlv ther balonaod trum a knowedge of the politics of their fathers. And uisy wontd not nave known my own predilections In tbe present contest, had not one ol tbdr number uked me which of tbt candidates Ipreferred. But, tf "Alumnus" would undnralarrl th stats of things bort correctly, he bad butter ujio m wi w mo university, ue would Una noon member of tbt faculty busy teaching io bis own department, whether In science or in literature; and that party politics Is one of the branches which wo leave the student to study at some other place aod time. If "Alnmnua" does conclude to visit us, there Is another matter to wbicb I might direct his attention. Thstwo societies here, to tho one or tbo other of wbicb 11 the students belong, have each a very good library, and la those llbrarlns are to be found tht "complelt works" of many of our great statesmen. Now, for fear that tbe minds ol ibe studeut may be 'poisoned" by reading some ol these staunch old patriots, would ft nut 1 w-ll tor "Alumnus" to exert himself, through tbe Legislature or otherwise, to "drive" them out of the libraries; It Is true tbt works of UI-noua are in the same, com with thaan nf J.rrr on; but from appearances, the Virginian seem to bt read pretty oiten, while tbe fouth Carolinian maintains a posture ot "mutorly inactivity." Whoa I wu a student in college, tew years ago, the young politicians nsed tu de-bale In tbo "balls" of tbo societies ih un questions which the old polltiolaus were debt Hog lu tbo balls of Congress. Cox, or at least tbey bave suffered blm to be elected, notwithstanding tbe abuse be bu for years heaped upon both their candidates and tbelr principle, and who In Congress will be found aot'og with the Drookees, Keitts, and the whole pro slavery Buchanan orowd, to futen the curse ot human bondage apon tbe fair, free land of Kansas. " Alumnus" bu also made another mistaku In supposing Ibat ibe faculty lake unnn tbftroaelvss to iniln.nc, thn im. iitical opinions of tbe Bludents. Thstwo societies here, to tho one or tbo other of wbicb 11 the students belong, have each a very good library, and la those llbrarlns are to be found tht "complelt works" of many of our great statesmen. Now, for fear that tbe minds ol ibe studeut may be 'poisoned" by reading some ol these staunch old patriots, would ft nut 1 w-ll tor "Alumnus" to exert himself, through tbe Legislature or otherwise, to "drive" them out of the libraries; It Is true tbt works of UI-noua are in the same, com with thaan nf J.rrr on; but from appearances, the Virginian seem to bt read pretty oiten, while tbe fouth Carolinian maintains a posture ot "mutorly inactivity."
