April 8 Is Deadline To Tolarehyk Is Register For May Art Show }|onore j por Entries for the 37th Annual May Show, sponsored by the little Art Gallery of North Canton Library, will be received Wednesday, April 5 througih Saturday, April 8, during the following hours: Wednesday and Thursday, 7 to 9 p.m.; Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 5 p.m. is the deadline for all entries. 100th Victory City Privides Area To Deposit Limbs, Shrubs Due to the severe storm, the City Administration is sure that all of the citizens of North Canton have an over abundance of small tree limbs and shrubs without any method of disposing of them. For that reason, the city is designating two areas in the City to the rear of Dogwood Park and a portion of the Street Department land near Price Park as an area for citizens to take their accumulation of small tree limbs and shrubs to assist in cleaning up our community from this severe winter. In turn, the City will chip up these limbs and shrubs and use this material in the parks. The Admininis- tration wants to caution that the only type of material being accepted will be tree Urns and shrubs and in no way can theCity handle leaves and debris. Thes e areas will be marked with a sign to assist you as to the location. These locations will be available from April 1, 1978 to April 30, 1978. Increases Number To 10 Any artist or craftsman who Is a resident of Stark County and is 16 years of age or older may submit a limit of three works total in any of thefollowingcate- gories: oil and acrylic painting; watercolor; drawing; print making; jewelry* enamel and textile; mixed media and collage; and three dimensional which includes pottery and sculpture. Due to the limited space in the Gallery, photography will not j?e,,ac-^ cetped in the competition. All entries/must he original and recent, and must be framed or mounted, ready for hanging. Entry blanks are available at the library, Canton Art Institute, and Massillon Museum. The show will open Sunday, May 7, with a preview showing and awards presentation. Dr. Fay Biles, Guest Speaker At Jaycee Wives Banquet The North Canton Jaycee Wives announce that Dr. Slay R. Biles will be the guest speaker at the banquet Wednesday, April 12 honoring the Out- standirT Young Woman of 1978. A nativ of Reading, Pa., Dr. Biles arned her A3. from Dukt University in 1949 in. bioi ?ical sciences and HPE;he. M.A. at Kent State Univers ty in 1956 in HPE; and Ph..">. from The. Ohio State University >in 1968 in Comm tnications and HPE. She is presently vice president for Public Affairs and Development at Kent State University and Executive Manager of programs in Communications, University Relations; Alumni Relations,Development and KSU Foundation. Dr. Biles also is responsible for budget supervision for over a million dollars. Dr. Biles has recived numerous honors including the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1970 at Kent State University, National Advertising Agency Network Top Award for PEPI Project Public Relations Program, and Meritorious A- ward from the Ohio Association of AAHPER. Dr. Biles has appeared on many television shows including Not for Women Only, Dinah Shore Show, Phil Donahue Show and Morning Exchange. Her husband is Bedford Biles, J.D., an Akron attorney. The Outstanding Young Woman, who was chosen from among the many nominations received, will be announced at the banquet to be held at Shady Hollow Country Club on April 12 beginning at 6:30 p.m. This will be an excellant opportunity to hear Dr. Biles, and to honor a wo-' man who has made an outstanding contribution to the North Canton Community. Work Closes Three Highways In Stark Co. Stark County Engineer, Joseph A. Sturrett, has announced that, effective Monday, Mar. 20, traffic is being detoured on sections of three county highways. Sturrett explained that Swamp St. NE, in Lake Township, will be closed for two weeks between Duquette Ave. NE, and Congress Lake Ave. NE, to permit county crews to replace on old bridge with a new culvert. During the closure, traffic willbe de- toured via Duquette Ave. NE, and Edison St. NE, (S.R. 619) Sturrett also noted that 12th St. NW, in Perry Township, will be closed for two weeks between Perry Dr. NW, and Jackson Ave. NW, to facilitate the installation of the county's continuing sanitary sewer project. Traffic will be. routed over Perry Dr. NW, and Jackson Ave. during the closure. And, Perry Dr. SW, will be closed for one week between 13th St. SW, and 15th St. SW, to facilitate installation of another leg of the sanitary sewer project. During the closure, truck traffic will be directed over Tuscarawas Street (S.R. 172) to Raff Rd.SW, south on Raff Road to Southway St. SW, and return to Perry Rd. SW. Auto traffic will be detoured via 13th St. SW, Brooklyn Ave. SW, and 15th St.SW, and vise-versa. Hoover High School Wrestling Coach Walt Tolarehyk was honored Monday evening, Mar. 27 for his 100th career victory by his wrestlers, both past and present, opposing coaches and referees, parents of the wrestlers and their friends. Tolarehyk's five senior wrestlers, Tom Dickerson, Doug McLaughlin, Todd Beavers, Jeff Esmont and Matt Justyn, all cited their coach as being an integral part in each of their lives, not just as winning wrestlers, but as young men growing up. Mr. Tolarehyk also was presented with several gifts donated by local concerns and the wrestling parents committee presented the Tolarchyks with acheckfor $1,300 in expense money for a vacation of the. family's choice. Scholarship Application Available The Orchard Hill P.T.A. has announced that applications are now being accepted for the Arline Van Horn Education Award. This award is presented annually in honor of Arline Van Horn, who devoted her life to teaching of the young and who taught with special distinction at Orchard Hill Elementary School. The $200,00 award is available to a local student who attended Orchard Hill School for at least two years. It can be applied to any form of higher education and/or training, academic or vocational; College, University, Nursing, Business College, Vocational, Technical, etc. Application forms maybe obtained from J. Cadet Brian B.Wood.son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford J. Wood, 153 S. Pershing St., is receiving practical work in military leadership at the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps advanced camp at Ft. Lewis-, Wash. Cadet Wood is enrolled in ROTC at Bowling Green State University. Massillon Man injured At Building Site On Tuesday, March. 28, at approximately 12;15p.m. at the construction site of the New joann's Apparel Shop at the corner of South Main St. and W. Maple St. Vernon A.Stewart, ofMas- sillon, a construction worker for Knoch & Sons Inc. was injured after he apparently passed outwhile working on theconstructipn of thebasementofthebuild- ing. The Emergency Medical. Service quickly arrived on the scene along with Fire Department No. 4 and 2 police cruisers. The man was layed on a stretcher and lifted from the construction area. He was taken to TimkenMercy Hospital and treated there. NC Police Department To Add Additional Patrolman To Force Michael Grimes, New Patrolman In North Canton Meet Your Congressman Breakfast Friday Robert J. Fairless, Chairman of the Congressional Action Committee of the Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce, has announced that a "Meet Your Congressman Breakfast" will be held with Congressman Ralph S. Regula at 7:30 a.m., Friday, Mar. 31, at the Horn of Plenty Buffet Restaurant. The breakfast meeting'is sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce inthe 16th Congressional District and the program will be conducted by the Greater Canton Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chairman of the subcommittees making up the Greater Canton Chamber's Congressional Action Committee are Harold E. Forrest on Taxation, Robert F. Miller on Labor Legislation, Clyde L. VanHorn on Federal Controls of Business and Robert J. Davis on Federal - State Local Relations. These committee chairmen have prepared statements of position and questions for Congressman Regula on important issues that are under consideration by Congress. They include the coal strike situation, the energy program, the labor reform legislation, Panama Canal Treaties and other subjects. Following the exchange of views on these and other subjects, the meeting will be thrown open toquestions by those in attendance. Reservations for the breakfast may be made by calling the Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce, phone 456-7253. Michael Grime» Mayor Dennis Grady announced the appointment of Michael J. Grimes to the position of Patrolman in the North Canton Police Department. This appointment became effective March26. Grimes was appointed by the Mayor from the Civil Service eligibility list certified to him by the North Canton Civil Service Commission as a result of the Civil Service* examination held September 24, 1977. Grimes is the first officer added to the North Canton police since April, 1973. As a sergeant in the Military Police Division ofthe UJ3 Ai r Force, Grimes served :nIndo-China. After completing the compulsory Ohio Peace Officers Training School program at the Canton Police Training Academy, Grimes served with the Alliance Police Department prior to coming to North Canton. Grimes is a native of Minerva, and a graduate of Minerva High School. He is married, and he and, his wife will be moving to North Canton in the near future. School Districts Given Funds Stark County Auditor William B. Bowman announces the third monthly distribution of the school foundation funds for 1978, begining the quarterly total for the county's 19 school districts to $6,371,478.34* The foundation funds are derived from various statov revenues including theper- sonal income tax and the state lottery. Three month totals for three area Stark County Districts are: North Canton City, $402,784.63; Plain Local, $694,804.59. and Jackson Local, $225,002. 99. North Canton City Councilmen adopted legislation Monday evening, Mar. 27 that will increase the limited number of North Canton Policemen from 9 to 10 so that an additional patrolman can be added to the North Canton police force. ADOPTED legislation NC Rotary Club Million Dollar Rotary District Conference Is April 14-16 North Canton Rotarians are reminded to sign up immediately for the 1978 District Conference at At- wood Lake Lodge April 14, 15 and 16. Governor John Hutson and the committee from the Columbiana Club are in charge of the program. On April 20, Stan Mengel, Director for the for Economic Education at Akron University will be featured speaker. April 27, Paul Poorman, Editor of the Akron Beacon Journal will speak to the club. Ray Gillman is program chairman for April. Contact Ken Dansizen for reservation forms. This legislation will also increase the total number of North Canton Police Department employees from 29 to 30. According to Police Chief Robert Fulk, the number of patrolmen North Canton has is now within the National recommended quota for a city the size and population of North Canton, but that two additional patrolmen could still beused. The Chief pointed out that the last new patrolman added to the force was in 1973. Councilmen also heard a complaint from Mrs. Ronald Mason of 341 Castleton NE about ihe condition of Applegrove Rd. which is presently under construction for a Sanitary Sewer Project. Mrs. Masonstated that she and her husband work in Akron and have no access out of the city to reach 1-77 because because Applegrove, Pittsburg, Orion and Woodrow are torn up. She stated that Portage Street is out of their way and that thetorn- up roads are damaging the cars. Her husband's car has a broken spring from hitting a chuck hole. Mayor Dennis Grady responded by stating that "any sanitary sewer project' IS an Inconvenience;" but that the City's contractor is a- head of schedule. The Mayor pointed out that Boger Contractors is doing the projects on N. Cleveland Ave., and Pittsburg Rd., which is under the jurisdiction of the County Commissioners. North Canton has jurisdiction only to their boundaries. The Mayor stated that Portage Road was left open for access, although it is out of the way for some. "1 don't have an easy solution," said the Mayor. He did tell Mrs. Mason he would send a letter to the County Commissioners complaining about the problem. In other business, Council: AGREED to continuewith the Metro Narcotics Project at a cost not to exceed $1,024.14. Documentary Photo Exhibit At Canton Art Institute ALEKRAPOPQRT SISTER ANN GILLEN NC Planners Meet Apr. 13 The North Canton Planning Commission will meet Thursday, Apr. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers to review the parking lot plans for Wilbur-Beech- wood apartments submitted by Metropolitan Contracting, Inc., and consider the request for zone change for the premises situated on the northwest corner of S. Twelve From the Soviet Underground" is a documentary photo exhibit of a group show which opened in Leningrad in November 1975. It brings to the free world the manifesto of. 12 Leningrad Jewish Artists whose work remains behind the Iron Curtln. The exhibit will be at the Canton Art Institute from April 9 through April 28 and is free and open to the public. The exhibit is cosponsored by the Canton Art institute, Temple Israel and the Cultural Center for the Arts. A Preview Program and dinner is planned for Sat urday, Apr. 8 in the Cultural Center for the Arts. GlenOak Miss Wins Area Competition Marea Heropoulos Marea Heropoulos, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Heropoulos of 1404 35th St. NW, Canton, and a student at GlenOak High School, was- the winner of the Zone VI Oratorical Contest sponsored by Optimist International at Imperial House on March 14. Zone VI is composed of the four clubs of Greater Akron and the Canton and North Canton clubs. Marea was the North Canton Club's representative, having won the club's local contest in January. She will advance to the Northeast Regional to be held at the Fairlawn Hilton Inn on April 15. Massillon Man injured At Building Site On Tuesday, March. 28, at approximately 12;15p.m. at the construction site of the New joann's Apparel Shop at the corner of South Main St. and W. Maple St. Vernon A.Stewart, ofMas- sillon, a construction worker for Knoch & Sons Inc. was injured after he apparently passed outwhile working on theconstructipn of thebasementofthebuild- ing. The Emergency Medical. Service quickly arrived on the scene along with Fire Department No. 4 and 2 police cruisers. The man was layed on a stretcher and lifted from the construction area. He was taken to TimkenMercy Hospital and treated there. NC Police Department To Add Additional Patrolman To Force Michael Grimes, New Patrolman In North Canton Meet Your Congressman Breakfast Friday Robert J. Fairless, Chairman of the Congressional Action Committee of the Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce, has announced that a "Meet Your Congressman Breakfast" will be held with Congressman Ralph S. Regula at 7:30 a.m., Friday, Mar. 31, at the Horn of Plenty Buffet Restaurant. The breakfast meeting'is sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce inthe 16th Congressional District and the program will be conducted by the Greater Canton Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chairman of the subcommittees making up the Greater Canton Chamber's Congressional Action Committee are Harold E. Forrest on Taxation, Robert F. Miller on Labor Legislation, Clyde L. VanHorn on Federal Controls of Business and Robert J. Davis on Federal - State Local Relations. These committee chairmen have prepared statements of position and questions for Congressman Regula on important issues that are under consideration by Congress. They include the coal strike situation, the energy program, the labor reform legislation, Panama Canal Treaties and other subjects. Following the exchange of views on these and other subjects, the meeting will be thrown open toquestions by those in attendance. Reservations for the breakfast may be made by calling the Greater Canton Chamber of Commerce, phone 456-7253. Michael Grime» Mayor Dennis Grady announced the appointment of Michael J. Grimes to the position of Patrolman in the North Canton Police Department. This appointment became effective March26. Grimes was appointed by the Mayor from the Civil Service eligibility list certified to him by the North Canton Civil Service Commission as a result of the Civil Service* examination held September 24, 1977. Grimes is the first officer added to the North Canton police since April, 1973. As a sergeant in the Military Police Division ofthe UJ3 Ai r Force, Grimes served :nIndo-China. After completing the compulsory Ohio Peace Officers Training School program at the Canton Police Training Academy, Grimes served with the Alliance Police Department prior to coming to North Canton. Grimes is a native of Minerva, and a graduate of Minerva High School. He is married, and he and, his wife will be moving to North Canton in the near future. School Districts Given Funds Stark County Auditor William B. Bowman announces the third monthly distribution of the school foundation funds for 1978, begining the quarterly total for the county's 19 school districts to $6,371,478.34* The foundation funds are derived from various statov revenues including theper- sonal income tax and the state lottery. Three month totals for three area Stark County Districts are: North Canton City, $402,784.63; Plain Local, $694,804.59. and Jackson Local, $225,002. 99. North Canton City Councilmen adopted legislation Monday evening, Mar. 27 that will increase the limited number of North Canton Policemen from 9 to 10 so that an additional patrolman can be added to the North Canton police force. According to Police Chief Robert Fulk, the number of patrolmen North Canton has is now within the National recommended quota for a city the size and population of North Canton, but that two additional patrolmen could still beused. The Chief pointed out that the last new patrolman added to the force was in 1973. Councilmen also heard a complaint from Mrs. Ronald Mason of 341 Castleton NE about ihe condition of Applegrove Rd. which is presently under construction for a Sanitary Sewer Project. Mrs. Masonstated that she and her husband work in Akron and have no access out of the city to reach 1-77 because because Applegrove, Pittsburg, Orion and Woodrow are torn up. She stated that Portage Street is out of their way and that thetorn- up roads are damaging the cars. Her husband's car has a broken spring from hitting a chuck hole. Mayor Dennis Grady responded by stating that "any sanitary sewer project' IS an Inconvenience;" but that the City's contractor is a- head of schedule. The Mayor pointed out that Boger Contractors is doing the projects on N. Cleveland Ave., and Pittsburg Rd., which is under the jurisdiction of the County Commissioners. North Canton has jurisdiction only to their boundaries. The Mayor stated that Portage Road was left open for access, although it is out of the way for some. "1 don't have an easy solution," said the Mayor. He did tell Mrs. Mason he would send a letter to the County Commissioners complaining about the problem. Twelve From the Soviet Underground" is a documentary photo exhibit of a group show which opened in Leningrad in November 1975. It brings to the free world the manifesto of. 12 Leningrad Jewish Artists whose work remains behind the Iron Curtln. The exhibit will be at the Canton Art Institute from April 9 through April 28 and is free and open to the public.
